6 THE DAILY BEE---COUNCIL BLUFFS, WEDNESD iHE DAILY BEE. COUNCIL BLUFFS. Wodnesday Morning, October 10. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: 20 conts per week $10.00 per Yoar OFFICE: 0.7 Pearl Street, Near Broadway. MINOR MENTION. Sce Joseph Reiter's fall goods. Additional local on soventh page. The courts did nothing yestorday. Cheap Railroad Tickets at Bushnell's. Dr. G. J. Ross, of Shenandoab, was at the Pacific yesterday. J. W. Jonss, of Missouri Valley, was in the city last evening. The blackmailing case is to be investi- gated by Judge Aylesworth to-day. John Dillon and his ‘‘States Attorney” company were at the Ogden house yes- terday. Leave to wed was yestorday given Jas. Foster, of Stanbury, Mo, and Ella Gregg, of this city. The saloons were closed protty effectu- ally yesterday, and there was little drunkenness visible. (ireat preparations are being mado for the laying of the corner stone, of the Masonic Temple Thursday. “The city council couldn’t get & quorum on the night before electiou and will try again to-morrow evening. Yesterday the Harmony band made music for the Democrats, while Wall McFadden's drum and fife corps stirred up the hearts of the Republicans. George Johnson, who came to this country from Sweden not long ago, died at his home noar the Wabash depot, Monday night, and was buried yestorday. Albert J. Glass, the vice president and manager of the Janesville (Wis.) Machine ocompany, was in the city yesterday, in- terviewing the agricultural implement men. One drunken fellow who was orating on the eve of election, was the only one for the police court to adjust yesterday. His night in the calaboose having sobered him, he was turned loose to vote. The dying Democratic glimmer gasps that Tae Beeman hasactually crossed the Union Pacific bridge after dark. That is a feat the fellow w%\o runs the glimmer could not do, unless the prohibitory law is strictly enforced. W. 0. Jackson has contributed a cord of hard wood to the Home for the Friondless. It will take about two more cords to run through the season, besides what coal has been donated. There aro other chances for generosity to show itself, also. At the Baptist church Thursday oven- ing there is to bo & supper and musical entertainment for the benefit of the Home of the Friendless, and all should gladly avail themselves not only of the opportunity to enjoy themsolves but of helping along the worthy cause. The quartette who are to sing at the entertainment to-morrow evening for the Home of the Friendless, consists of the Messrs, Belden and Messrs. Stacey and Cole. The same quartette sang at the Sunday school concert Sunday night, and made excellent music. 1t is bad enough for The Nonpareil to|. be twenty-tour to forty-eight hours be- hind in getting on to the sensation about & man being here searching for a runa- way wife, but it is appalling cheek for it to clip the news boldly out of Tux B, and reproduce it word for word, as it did in yesterday's issue. A youthful cousle from Mills county were in the city yesterday and while on their way to the court {u»uuu to get the needed permit to carry out their desire of wedlock, were suprised by the ap- proach of the girl's father right behind them, he having followed them up. He was shert and decided, and as the girl was under age, the wedding was declared off for the present. Judge Reed yesterday added to the list of cul\triguumfl of the Home of the Friendless, the smount being $20. Cash is very acceptable at the Home now-a-days to complete the needed im- provements, to say nothing of the cur- rent expenses which are increasing heavi- lfy a8 winter nyxrunclwu, ‘Then there are amilies in need who are being relioved also, so that there are many just demaads for contributicns, [ THE ELECTION. The Republicass Carry the Cty and County Beyond Doubt. A Quict Day at the Polls—8cenes and Incidents, The election in the city yesterday passed off very quietly indeed, and while there was cossiderable enthusiasm and much working, yet there wero no distur bances or rows, and the number of votes was small. There was crowd, of course, standing about each polling place, a few challenges, some loul talk occasionaly, but for the most part good nature and a light vote characterized the day. There wore many who voted the Republican State ticket on the prohibition issue who from their habits of life would hardly be expected to favor that side, but some of these explained thatJohn Barleycorn had downed them so many times that they wladly improved a chance to give him a thump. There was “music in the air," too. McFadden’s fife and drum corps urging on Republicans, while the Har- mony band was in the employ of the Democrats, They had quite a lively but comical contest at the Fourth ward pol s, each trying to out-wind the othe Both blew and_pounded, and pounded and blow, until Mc fadden’s arm gave out, and when ho abandoned his bass drum for a moment, the crowd cheered and cheered again, By 5 o'clock in the afternoon the Dem- the Steinhart Bros.. the extensive whole- sale liquor dealers of New York, while J. A. Frehan is of the former firm of H. Stern & Co., and has a_large acquain tance as well as an established trade in this part of the cauntry. The house is a strong one and takes no second place in quantity or quality of goods, mor in the amount of business done. e Horsford's_Aci Very Satisfactory fin Dr. P. P. Thore were many charges and counter chargea concerning the political methods used here. The Republicans claimed that there were a large number of Dem- ocratic cow-boys, who were being run in and had to be stopped thuy being non- residents. The Democrats on the other hand were loud in proclaiming that Re- serting thati to-day a nnmber of prosecu- tions would be atarted, and the matter aired up in he courts. About 6 o'clock word came from Lew township thht instead of casting its usual Democratic majority of sixty, the town had gone Repubiican. This from a Democratic messenger, who had been at the polls most of the day was rather a dampener to the Democrats and they felt like going home. The count of the vote polled was vu? slow, and not complete until after m night. The Republican majority in this city will reach about 150, and a safe esti- mate gives the Republicans from 300 to 400 mnjority in this county By 10 o'clock last night the Democrats conceded the defeat of their entire publicans were buying up votes, and as-|east, for cash at $6 per acre—improve- ments worth $1,000—or trade for good city property here or in Omaha. stree’s David Bennison, of Kewanee, Il1,, is in the city visiting ¥.
