THE WEEK'S BUSINESS, A SATISFACTORY SHOWING, NEw Yourk, September 14.—R. G, Dun & Co., of the mercantile agency, report that the ovents of the week show generally satisfactory prospects for the business of the country. The weather is favorable to the progress of the fall trade, especially in dry goods, a business which has been very active during the weel Transactions outside of New York show con- siderable increase, with a light decreasc in the city Rumor: to damage to the corn crop had the effect of stimulating speou that staple and advancing the price. The same remark may be applied to cotton. Some improvement is noted in the iron trade, with firmer prices. There isa better feeling in oil, prices being well supported and business active. The grocery trade is satisfactory. Business at the stock exchange has been large, with a general improvement in prices of s curities, Money is plenty and at low rates. Altogether the situation is more satisfactory than last week, and the prospect for the com- ing months appears excellent. Business fail- ures, while somewhat numerous, are, with few exceptions, unimportant, the number reported during the week being 173 throughout the United States and Canada. FINANCIAL Niw York, September 14. Money—Easy at 2@24 per cent. Prime Paper—5}@7 per cent. Exchange bills, quiet and steady at 4.813; demand, 4.85. Governments—4c higher and in good de- mand; 3'sare a shade easier on talk of a call next weok. Stocks—This was another quiet day in stocks. At the opening there was a fair de- mand and prices rose } to§ per cent, the latter on Wabash preferred. Subsequently the bears raided the Villard shares, forcing Northern Pucific down from 41} to 393, preferred from 75 to 72{, and Orezon Transcontinental from 664 to 641, Rumors were current that the shorts on these stocks were compiling a circu- lar intended to show the financial condition of the company in an _unfavorable light. Tele- graphic orders were sent to Philadelphia to sell shaves in this market with the view of creating an impression that the long stock held in Philadelphia was coming upon the market. Thegeneral list responded to the dapressionin Northern Pacific to a very slight extent, prices falling only 3@13 per cent. In the final sales there was a rally of 3@§ per cent.
