The meeting of the lawyers of the Third judicial district, comprising the counties of Douglas, Washington, Burt and Sarpy, the object of which was to agree upon a plan to secure the election of district judges whose only recommen. dation should be their fitness for the po- sition, without regard to political opin- ;ns, took place at the court house in this city yesterday at 2 p. m. pursuant to the petition previously circulated and signed for that purpose. e meeting was very largely attended by the bar of this city and representa- taves from Washington and Sarpy were present but none from Burt. With but slight exceptions, the resolu- tion was warmly supported, and by a strong vote was carried with but one dis- senting voice. The following additional resolution was then offered by Mr. Charles R. Re- dick, of Douglas: Aeesolved, That the district central committees of the respective parties be requested to call the judicial convention at the same time and place, in order to effect, if possible, nomination in accord with the views of this meeting. - Leesolved, That a committee of seven be appointed to convey this request to said committees, and to confer with themn as to the best method of securing the election of the gentlemen selected by this meeting. Prescnted at the Vassar Fund Con- cert by Home Talent, Last evening, at the opera house, to a large and remarkably intelligent audience, was given the concert prepared by the young ladies who are interested in in- creasing the fund for the education of western girls at Vassar college. The programme was compiled with strictly classical outlines, but was of such moderate length that it gave great satis- faction. Miss Kate James, of Council Bluffs, the soloist of the evening, was re- ceived very warmly, and met her recep- tion and encores most winningly. The scene and air from Beethoven's ‘‘Eide- lio,” Op. 72, a very severe selection, was her first number. She released the full- ness of her tone occasionally by a sweot tonch of the natural vivacity of herstyle, which showed itself more completely in the ballad, afterwards, and especially on encore, “‘Twicken ry.” The ‘‘Dichterlieder,” h ““In den " were very prettily done; in fact, it may be said Miss James captured her aud woon as she had sung “Twi Ferry, and they welcomed each reappear- ance thereafter heartily. Of the other performers we cannot speak at length on account of our full columns The quartettes were very per- fectly done, Misses Poppleton, Rustin, Yates and Mr. Mayer at the piano, and Miss Atkins’ march from Tannhauser showed a remarkably flexible touch, bringing out the full power of the Chick- ering Mrs. Squires, Mrs. Estabrook and Mrs, Peck sang the *“May Dance,” and in answer to an enthusiastic encore gave *‘The Maiden’s Spring Song,” one of the loveliest of trios. The stage was set with much taste and a profusion of beautiful flowers added to the richness of the scene. The concert was in all points successful. nisgRe v Enterprising local agents wanted 1n this town for an article that is sure to sell. Live drugsi sts and grocers preferred.
