About twenty poll tax suits are to command Judge Aylesworth’s attention to-morrow. There are still a good many delinquents whom Mr, Buuter is aftes with a sharp prod. The bids for the mason work on the Masonic temple were opened last night by the committee, but no action wa taken on them. They were laid over until next Monday evening. Harkness Brothers are building an ad- dition to the rear of their store, for an office, which will greatly im ;rove the ap pearance and add to the ¢uveniouce vf the interior of their estublis.ument. The foundation of the new Catholic church is fust reaching completion. This church, when completed, will be one of tho finest ir the country and will bo u great improvement for the city at large. Sherifl Chatham passed through here with the two prison- ers, and also a feeble-minded boy, whom he is taking to Glenwood, yesterday. Benedict will be remembered as the man whom Officers Cusick and Brooks caught in Omaha. He is a particularly hard one, and it will be a relief to know that the public for a time will not be troubled with him, The Ber Job Offico is getting out a neat circular to the patrons of the tele- phone, calling their attention to some important changes in the system of an- swering calls, Under the new manage- ment subs:ribers will call only by num- ber, and will do their own ringing, thus giving the operator at the central oftice an opportunity to answer all calls promp- ly. By doing this Manager Fair says that it will insure prompt attention and groatly improve the system. There has also been prepared a complete list of all the instruments and their respective num- hera. The above change takes place on the 26th inst. at 8a.m, The effort to secure $2,000 as a firm financial basis for the Young Men's Christinn association, to establish its gymnasium and start other enterprises in connection with its work, is not aban doned, although but little has been said about it publicly of late, There has al ready been socured about 81,400, and i is thought that the balance will soon b forthcoming. The association hopes to be able to its finances in such a shaj e that it can not only establish the siumm, but can employ a regular s experienced in the work, who can ¢ entire time and atéention to it. Then i will thrive more and do better work Ihey ave already looking about for jus weli o man, and by the time they find the winn they will doubtless have the needed means. The never-ending Rainer-Blackert mu tual assault case is new well into the sec md chapter. In the first. chapter Attor ucy Sears appeared for the prosecutin witness, Rainer, while Attorney Lindt, for the defendaut, kept making Scur hase hire from court to court, and fron day to day for two months before a hear ing was had, and Blackort was bound wer. Now Blackert is the prosecuting witness and Rainer is the defendant, an the tables are turned. The case camebe fore Justice Abbott, and at once a chany: o venue was takento Judge Aylesworth ¢ wurt. Whether Sears will give Lindt a nuch of a chase as Lindt gave him seem a be more the question to be determing han getting ut uny real justico in the sase.
