Having no previous notice of the in- tended strike, we were not prepared to supply the vacant places lnst night. We therefore beg our patrons to be indulgent for a few days until our printers force is recruited, or the strike terminated. PR ot GLAD GIRLS, They Join in a Happy Observance of Commencement at St. Fran- cis Academy. Yesterday morning the exercises ar- ranged for the eighth annual commence- ment of St. Francis Academy caused a very large gathering of parents, relatives and friends of the participants to gather at the building, every seat being taken, and mauy of the audience being content to stand even rather than miss the inter- esting programme. The rooms, thrown together into one large hall for the pur- pose, were very attractively decorated with festoons of green leaves, with bou- quets, floral designs, and with mottos of green upon a background. of white, their visitors being greeted by such wordings as ‘“‘Religion and Science,” and ‘‘Wel- come.” The stage at one end of the room was very attractively arranged and had the appearance of a bower of beauty. The programme, as given in yesterday's Bek, was carried out very successfully. It was opened in a beautiful manner by an entrance march in which all the girls appeared clad in white, ornamented with flowers and bright sashes, and though the stage gave limited room for so many children, yet the marches, counter- marches and various evolutions, were performed with wonderful accuracy, the scholars at the close forming a semi-cir- cle, facing the audience, and graded ac- cording to height, the little ones in front. ' In this position they gave a chorous, ‘‘Gloria,” by Mo- zart, in ‘which their voices made a grand and sweet harmony As the last strains of the chorus died away, Miss Fannie McAttee stepped out of the cir- cle at the front, and gave a very pleasing welcome and salutatory, after which the various numbers of the progamme as an- nounced passed along very smoothly, with much variety and merit. The little folks in their Violet Song, in which they tossad their little boquets to the audience was especially pleasing, and called forth enthusiastic applause. A little operetta, ‘“‘Miracle of the Roses” was performed charmingly. In such a lengthy ana var- ied progrgmme, it is difficult to particu- larize with any justice. All the partici- pants merited praise, and the exercises were 80 wisely arranged as to give an ex- cellent showing of the culture gained at this school. The selections of music were both of the simple and of the highest classical kind, vocal and instrumental, while readings, essays, etc. brought be- fore the public the equally commendable showings of the ability of the pupils, and the excellent instruction of the sisters. The presentation to the :graduates was by Miss Annie Lusk, and the re- sponse by Miss Hattie Blaksim, after which the honors were conferred; ‘gradu- { 2> ating medals eto., and an excellent vale- dictory was given by Miss Belle Hender- son, who acquitted herself grandly, [he address was one of the best ever given here upon such an occasion, Rev. Fath- or Clark of Red Oak made some very be- fitting remarks, and gave some oxcellent advice to the pupils. The exercises closed with one of Schumann’s choruses, well rendered indeed..
