Please allow me and my famlly, through the columns of your paper, to acknowledge the kindness of a large company, who entertalned our resl- dercs and gave us a complete surprize, This company proved to be & *‘pound party.” It was made up of members and friends of the congregation and Sabbath school of the Engilsh Luth- eran church, and they came, each bringing & pound packsge of some usefui article for the pastor's family, There was one thing unusual about these pounds, In most lustances they drew considerably over sixteen ounces, and were such pounds, indeed, as wounld soon thrust any groceryman y Mrs. Dal Mie DEPRAVITY'S DARLINGS. The Rald on the HNymphs of Ninth 8treet, The Burglars Btill Getting in Their Work, The depths of depravity were stirrod Wednesday by the rald of the police force on the low dives on 9th and 11th streeta oocupled by fallen women, a Iarge squad of whom were taken to the city jall and looked up, This rald was made on the strength of the resolution adopted by the clity ocouncll some weeks ago to clear ont all houses of bad repute within two blocks of the Dodge street school. Of those arrested Wednesday nine were from 9th street and five from 11th street, the former being of the loweat class and the latter a shade more respectable. They were put in different cells in the city jail and made night hideous with the blasphemy and obscenity whioh could be heard for two or three blocks away and in- side the jall were perfectly horrible. No one who {8 not thrown in com- pany with snch creatures can concelve of the extent to which they can go and of thelr utter loss of all sense of deoenoz. As they sat In the cells, few of them golug to sleep, they made the alr blue with oaths. Oune colored woman had a little boy when arrested, which she deposlited in the care of a friend, and a white woman had a delloate and protty featured boy, not her own, who sat up In the center of the cell, in the midet of the howling mob with his eyos wide ope sleep driven away by the hell that rsged around him, It would seem as 1f children should be taken from the castody of such per- sons and provided with a home some- whore. When the women were ar- ranged yesterday all plead gulity to the charge of belng inmates of houses of prostitution and nine ocases were aet for a hearlug on Friday at 2 p. m nd five for the same hour on Satur- d The latter all have counsel en- gaged and will make a desperate fight. ANOTHER VENTURE, A petition s being ciroulated yes- terday to have the house kept by Mliss Anna Wilson, and that by Mr. John Wallace, on lower Douglas street, ulled the same as the rest. Thas ar they have remalned unmolested, and the former is recognized as the most qulet and orderly plsce of the kiod in the olty. It happens, how- ever, to fall within the liinits named by the resolution, and the is ocon- slderable kicking that they have been exempted from the order lasued by the coucll, and one property owner who lives in the same block states that he will begin crimi- nal proceedings against them if the authorities do not act at once. BURGLARIES, M Burglars entered the house of M, W. Kennard on Taesday night and secured $80 In cash and a §250 gold watoh, The same night an attempt was made to enter Captain O, D. Kustin’s house on Harney street, but a New- foundland dog scared the thieves away. The house of A, D. Jones, at the northwest corner of Bixteenth and Harney streets, was entered the same :l{hl. and Mre. Jones' gold watch was akeon, Goo, Cunningham was yesterday robbed of a fine gold watoh and o small amount of cash, Mr. O, is the well- known Slxteonth streot blacksmith, POLICE COURT, In Judge Beneke's court yesterday morning, Henry Fledler, a mere boy, whostole a palr of pants valued at $1,26, was remanded to the jail. Be- ing under sixteen years of age he will be turmed over to the Distrlot Judge and an attempt made to send him to the reform school, The pollce broke up a rendezvous and landed two women and ‘*Bronoho Jack,” the sojourners at this tramps’ treat, in jail on a oharge of vagrancy. e trlo had been living in a dug-out near sulphur springs, regaling them- selves on water from the epring and on vegetables from Smich's gardens. It was found on examining the ordl- nance that women, boys under sixteen years of age, and blind persons are ex- empt from lts operstions, and in con- sequenee the two women were dis- charged. One czse of drunk and dlsorderly was fined $6 and coste; one Slocamb committed and one paid; two alleged vagrants discharged and one case con- tinued, Johu Maxwell, charged with va- granoy, had his oase continued. His mother appeared at the marshal oftice and pleaded for his release, olaiming that he was not to blam his actlons. She sald he once, when a boy, went {noto a trance and was thought to be dead. When he rece d 1t would seem that he had ‘‘the glft” of communicating with the spirits and at times is slightly non compos mentls, DISTRIOT COURT, The caseé of Marsh agalnat Sauer ls declded by Judge Wakeley, who holds that the regulation requirlng gers to deposlt thelr fares in the g: and prohibiting drivers from re- oeiving farcs, 1s a proper rcgulation, In Judge Wakely's court is on trial the case of H. 8. The ladies transacted some business of a miscellaneous charaoter before them iu reference to thelr special work, after which Mrs. G. L. Mirs, Walker ls one of the most ¢f fective, telling speakers that has ever appeared o a mesting in Omaha in behsif of misslon work., Her grace- ful presence and lady-like bearing im modlately drew forth the sympathy of her audience, who followed her re- merks throughout with intense inter- ent, ocoaelonally brushing aside tho tears that wonld flow unbldden as she drew graphic werd pictures of llte in the mining camps of Colorado and other parts of the west, aud dwelt opon the fact that the son of any mother present might some day be expcsed to their perils without the safeguard of proper moral restraint about them, uuless the church at jarge awoke to the sense of responeibility of the burden pesting upon them, and seeing thet tho croes of Christ was held aloft whenever the advance guard of western olvilization set up its atan ‘ard. Mrs. Walker related the clrcnmstances of the firat organiza- tion of the womana' executive committee, and showed that it was olearly the call of God to the women of the church to awake to a sense of the peril threatening our home Chrls- tlanity, unless active measures were taken to stem the advancing tide of corraption and sin. Thehome church of America is the basis of supply for all American missionary work, wheth- or done in our own country or beyond the seas; heres it behooves American churches to strengthen their bulwarks that the enemy does not creep in and overwhelm them. The speclal work of the woman's executlve committee s to secure funds for all the exceptional work In the ex- treme west, as in Mormon, Mexican, Indian and Jlke fields, The great forerunner of all church work ls the school house. The youth and children sre first secured and educated, and the way Is open then for further church work, The women of the Pre byterlan church in home misslon work suopplement the work of the general board in the exl- gencies that have arisen In our rapldly advanclug clivilization. They have, as it were, divided the work and committed a part of the trust to the women of the church, Mrs, Walker urged all to falthful, earnest work for the Master through the chanaels now open, He hss greatly blessed the efforts already put forth, and his volce now olearly calls the women of Amerioa to the resoune In all this grand home missionary work, prmststbmiec /03 s bt MRS THE MILL AT FLORENCE A Whole Urist of Set-Tos Agreed Upon. In regard to attending the natlonal encampment of the G A Denver, the officers decided that if 150 men signified their iatention of golng to Danver, they would see what could be done ia the way of securlng cheap transportation to and from that city.
