Cavin, The barbecue belng arranged for the Fourth will be one of the striking features of the day. Peter Bechtele's new hotel Is reach- ing into the third story now and is certalnly a great Improvement. In Justice Sohurs' court yesterday s oase was trled In which Constable l'dprtu?f of Omahs, sued the former Deputy United States Marshal, Stuart, for fees in serving some papers, The arguments are yet to be made. Some fine aport Is premised at the driving part on the 4th and 5th of July. There s the assurance that the number of entries for the races will be Iarge, while the other foatures of the Fourth will draw a crowd, and please them, too, Miss Mamie P. Vaughan, & nleco of W. R. Vaiughan, has just finlshed an exoellont orayon portraic of little Rush, the son whom O. 8, Olark, of The Nonparell, lately lost by slckooess. She has aleo dono an exoellent Madonna in orayon for Roev, Father MoMenomy. Prof Olker is on the war.path after the reckless roporter who stated that it was hls team which got tired of walting for hlm and run away, As rightly stated in Tas Bee it was a team beloaging to Mr. Dohany, and was not in his charge st the time they skipped. There was & quiet wedding In a double se! the institatlon of the deaf and dumb yesterday, the bride- m belog George W. Ramsey, the loreman of the shoe-shop, and Jennle Hanoook. His home is {n Brooklyn, Poweshiek oounty, and hers in Gild- den, Carroll county. He s a mute snd she & semi-mute, There are many frlends of both to congratulate them on thelr happy unlon, J. N. Baldwin and G, A, Holmes were exohanging some rather sharp drives yesterday, in the trial of a case before Justios Bohurs, and the wordy waifare having got pretty warm and personal, the justice started to check thew, uylnq: “‘Come, gentlemen, this won't do,” but changed his mind and remarked: *'Oh, well, never mind, I know you lawyers don't mean half you say, anyway.” The crowd roared and the banterlng was more effectually stopped than a sharp reprimand would have done. A colored woman appeared at pollce hesdquarters yesterday in great anxi- ety of mind, and pou forth her troubles. It seems that she got Mar- tin, the expressman, to haul a little plle of wood a few blooks, and because sho did not have the 60 cents to pay him, he hauled the wood away some- where. Ohief Flelds heart mellowed and he took the ha'f dollar out of his own pocket, and gave it to her, with instructions to tender it to Martin and heve him deliver the wood. Buneak-thieves visited the house of Mrs. Booth, on Statsman street, Wed- nesday night. The fawlly, on golng up stairs to rotire for the night, found the beds pulled spart as though searched, and the conients of a trank scattered about, but nothing was missod. It Is thought they were after asum of money, which was in the bouse, but whish was too carefully secroted for them to find, The strangest part of all ls that in one of the rooms chloroform had been spilled by the thleves, and one of the lamps had been burning, as it was still warm when one of the famlly started to light it, Sheritf Gulttar etarted last evening tor suother trip to Fort Madison, tak- ing two prisoners with him, one Qook, sentenced for two years on one charge of larceny and thirty days in joll on another, He will take his jail sentence after he serves his two years, The other prisoner was Lyons, the O, B. & Q car burglar, who goes for elghteen months. There are still four prisoners to take mcross the state, making ten in all for this term of court. The fact that of all trled only one was acquitted Is rather remarks- ble, and shows up well for the term, ———— Commerclal job printing, finest siyles znd ressonable rates, st Pryor's Bas Job Office, 7 Pearl stroet HIS LAST TRIP. A Traveling Man Poisons Himsel at the Pacific House, He Leaves a Business Like Note But Assigns uo Oause. Several Pawn Tickets Indicate Bare Sledding: About noon yesterday the discovery was made that one of the guests of the Paclfic house was lying dead in his roora, He proved to be a stranger who came to the hotel Wednesday morning ani registered as “H. O Francls, N Y.” When fonnd he was quite cold and rigld, and had sppar- ently died sometime durlng the night. There was froth about his mouth and Indlcations of haviug been pols- oned. He was a fine looking man, spparently about thirty.five years of oge, rather dark complexioned and a full beard, trimmed rather close Upon the table was a pad of writing paper, on the first sheet of which hehad written In a round, firm hand, very bariness-like, the followlng words: June 13,—" My real name isHarry ¥, Crane, I have been_traveling for the Jewell Belting Oo, Hartford T have polsoned myself. I have a trunk the check for whichis in my p: 1t is at Transfer depot. Telegraph Jewell Belting Co., Hartford, Conn, Uader his plilow were four little bottles of morphine pllls. His cloth- Ing was hanging up in the room, and in his pocketbook were found rallway checka and a number of business cards of Fleld & Welch, quarry men, ot Qalncy, Masa. There was also a post- office order for $10, dated Charlton, Iowa, June 4, and payabls at Quincy, Mass. Two pawn tickets were also found, both bolonglng to Omaha, One was fora dlamond pin at L>\man’s, on which 844 was due July 12, indiosfing that he had pawned it about the 12:h of this month, The other pawn tioket was at Fred Moehle's, for a gold watoh and chaln, on which $27.60 was due, the date of the loan belug June 12. Both tickets have the name of Travis fnstead of Orane, These tickets indi- oate that he was In Omaha Taesday last, and for some reason got short of funds, and pawned his jowelry. There 'Ilh found in his pocketbook $27.80 in onsl Ooroner Faul was notified and a jary impaneled, consisting of H. J. Henry, E. H. Odell and Charles D. Parmelee. Me. For‘;nlon, the proprietor of the hotel, teatified as to the man coming to the hotel, but he had not notlced anything pecullar’ about him. He was up and down stairs, and aboot the office much the day before. In the evening the man wanted a boy to g0 to a drug store, and the boy went over but could not get what he went for, and the man seemod qnite angry and went himaelf. From the testimony of Dr. McKune it appeared what he went for. He sald that the boy came to the store first aud wanted ome morphiue for a man at the hotel. The boy was told that they could not giveit to him, but that the man himself must come after t. Soon the man appeared and re quested some morphine,. He was {n- torrogated as to what he wanted it for, and said that he suffered greatly at times from neuralgis, and wanted it for that. He was golng out west, where he oould not get any very well, it belng out Ia the mining dle- trlot, and wanted two bottles, The bottles were sold to him, and he signed the reglater, as is usnally re- quired when poison is bought. The fact that four bottles were found in his room, indloates that he must have purchased two more at some other place. What he wanted of so much for suloldal purposes is a mystery. The porter, J. G, Penman, testified that the deceased In the evening asked for a pltoher of loed tes, and sald he wanted to get fixed for the night. He sald ho had sent over to get some medlolne, and acted as though in pain, Dr, Cook testified that there was about 2§ gralns missing from one bottle, and that one-half a grain would cause death ordinarily. The body was taken care of by Mr. Connell, the undertaker, and ~tele- grams sent as direoted in his last note, e The CAUGHEY HOUSE on Broad- way {8 one of the best hotels of Its slze In the weat. et o by Kedzle Filters at J. 0. Prosident Hopkins, of New York, Inspects Them Persomally, The Push to Make Up for De- lays Oaused by Storms, The Exocellent Character of the ‘Work Being Done- Sldney W. Hopkins, Euq., of New York, president of the Councll Bluffe Olty Water Works company, arrived in Council Blofts on Tuceday morning last. Harry Birkinbloe, the super- vislng englneer of the company, met him at the depot, and so eagor was the president to see what progress had been made since his last visit, that he sent his baggage to the Ogden house and acosmpanied Mr. Birkioblne in his carriege over to the works. Mr. Hopkins appeared to be ditap polinted at the slowness with which the work has progressed during his ab- sence, but he showed evident satiafac- tlon at the character of the work done since ho was last in Council Bluffs, It waa explained to him that duriog the month of May rain had fallen on twenty-elght days, aud hd could not therefore expect much progrees during soch weather The fine weather of the past few days has, however, enabled the engineer to augment his force and the result s apparent In every department of the work. The pipe layers on Broadway have reached Baneroft street, and 1f the weathor continues favorable all of upper Broad- way will soon be plped. At Glen avenue the elight damage done by the late storm to tho gate house has been repaired, und the new work has been nicely sodded witn fresh scd and the terrsco n now complete with fIta verdure of green that everywhere meeta the eye. Puddling is progreesing stesdlly on the eurface of the inslde embankment of th 0 reservolr, aud each day shows iefactory rise towards the top of the embankment of the clay material now going into the work. As the horses pursue thelr moxotonous rounde, dragging bshind them the heavy iron rollers used tu pack the materlal into solidity, one oan see how slow is this pro. ocess of lining the loner sur- face of the embsankments, which is %0 necessary to make a perfectly tight water basin, With that done, the company can put in place the brick lining, and the reservoir will be ready to recelve the water. All the land occupled by the com- pauy which surrounds the reservoir at Glen avenue has been fenced, and thus intruders, both man and beast, are kept from Interferlog with the work or marring the grounds, which now look so beautifal. The sodding of the ounter surface of the embankments of all the reservoirs was dono so early in the soason, an 80 well done that no effects upon them of the recent ralns are anywhere per- ceptible. Although the expense of ornamenting the work in this manner has been large, it is questionable whether the cost has been anything near the expense of repalring the em- bankments had they been left unpro- tected when the recent severe storm visited the city, The engine house at ¢he river begins to show how eolid and besutifal a struoture it is to be, the walls are up nearly to the point necessary for put- ting on the roof, and if the present favorable weather continues, in a very fow days more the roof will be iun place. We are informed that the pnmplog machinery was shipped from the east last Monday and will arrive on the ground sometime during the latter part of this month, Arrange- ments are perfected to met It op In the englne house as soon as it arrives. All the remaining hydrants, we are told, were also ship- ped on Wednesday of this week and will reach the ity early next weok. The engineer informs us that he in- tends to take advantage of the present favorable weather to gnlh the work to the utmost of his ability. The al- most daily rains In May prevented a satisfactory prosecution of the work last month, and there is an evident intentlon now to make up for time lost from that cause.
