Sympathy Should Not be Blind in Deallng with Claimants, 1t is one of the inevitable resulis of any great calomity that many of the real sufferers do not get the rellef they merlt, while some of those who have not suffered any got a blg slice from charlty, Tne Bee would not say a word to check the flow of sympathy and the pouring forth of charity, but still warning should be given the pub- lic that there are persons in this city who are sceking and galning asalst- ance who do not deserve It, at least not on account of having suffered from the flood. An instance will suffice; In the dugout there lives a man and womsn, the latter of whom s more generally known by the pame of her former husband, rather than that of the man with whom she Is now l'ving. This couple applied to and secured relief from the general fund, each coming seperately. the man under one name snd the wo- man urder a different name, the com- mittee supposing they were helping two distinct familles, instead of help- ing one, and they therefore got a double portion, The man and the woman each got a sack of flour and some other provisions, and clothing. Tney were watohed, and on leavin ihe relief headquarters they turnes south on Broadway. as though golng toward the flooded distriot, bnt after- wards turned by another street and got back to the dugouts. Not only did they get twice as muoch as thoy were entitled to have, had they suffered from the flood, but it is oonfidently stated that they did not suffor from the flood at all. It isal- most impossible to guard against all kinds of frauds, but there ought to be some way of punishing those who per- trate them, There will doubtless many who will make the flood a pretext for begging, and the publio generally should bewars of such, If any one can contribute to relleve the suffering, they should either give to only such cases as thoy know sbout personally, or should give to the com- mittee appolnted for that purpose, for although the committee msy be im- posed on somewhat, yet the chances are much less, as they investigate ev- ory case as well as possible, consider- ing the amount of work on their PANTING FOR PANTS.
