Then came Oker's band with a large ramber of Odd Fol- lows, In regalla, headed by the grand patriarchs with thelr purple plawes and glitterlog baldrics and shiniug awords, The fice department came next and made one of the most ot- tractivo features of the parade. The members on foot were dressed in thelr pleasing uniforms, while the englnes, trucks, and hoee carts were adorned with flowers, ribbons and wreaths un- til they duzzled with beauty. The platform was very nicely decorated, the stars and stripes belng the background, while all the stands of colors which had waved In the line of march, were added. The signal flags of the varlous army corps were also in sight, A stand in the center of the platform was covered with the national colors and wreaths of white and green, The exerclaes opened with ‘‘Nearer My God to Thee,” played very sweetly by Olker's band. Resv. Mr. Lemon offered o tender and befitting prayer. 8t. Paul's Eplscopal church choir sang an anthem. Another Humpty Dampty show ls to be at Dohany's next week. Now 1f Uncle Tom's cabin troupe ocould only be brooght here! There was not a solltary oase for the police court to dispose of yester- day morning, so Judge Aylesworth had the whole day for a holiday. It is expected that there might be a show of speed here by Gov. Stan- ford's horses, but Charles Marvi who la in charge of them, received or: dera yesterday to proceed eastward. Cassady & Oroutt adorned the front of thelr oarpet store in a very attractive manner yesterday. Bosldes long streamers of red, white and blue, and reaching from the top of the building, there was a jbeautifal arch of evergreens over the entrance, ‘bearing the words, ‘‘Honor our Coun- try's Defenders.” Oassady & Orcutt never do things by halves, Harkness Bros.’ drygoods establish- ment was very finely decorated yester- day. One of the large show.windows was arranged In a speolally appropri ate and beautiful manner, 1t beilny draped with the red, white and blue, and with orape, the whole giving a graceful expression of the commin- gling of patriotism with mourning, The board cf equalization has made » fow reductions, knocking $3,000 oft Alderman James' assessment and §300 off Alderman Elcher's, and have d a large number. It was ex- pected that the total mssessed value would reach §4,000,000, whish would enable the clty to lssue more bonds, but with all the ralses it will hardly reach this amount. General Agent Gault denles that the + Wabash rallway company has pur- chased ground near the iron works for a new depot. Such news is too good to be true, 8o he need not have denled it. Councll Bluffs has the ‘worst local depots of any clty of its siza. Some pressure should be brought to bear on all the rallway companies to rt them to bulld depots somewhat in keeping with the growth and im- portance of the city. e Mandel pays the best prices for second-hand household goods, furni- ture, etc. MAYOR OOLE, of Nebraska Olty, was then Introduced by J. M Paillips, the preslding officer, With a fine presence, a round, fall, far-reaching volco, Mayor Cole at once claimed the attention of all and held 1t to the oclose, at times oalling forth hearty applause. He presented eloquent and telling lessons for preserving the memory of those, who gave thelr all that the country might ba taved, and to observe by such days as this the sense of grati- tude for what they had done, and ap- preciation of thelr bravery, Ha took » glance . backward to the opening scenes of the war, the hurrylog to- gether of green troops, the expeota- tlon of all that It would soon be over, and the fear that the capltal would bo taken, He thought it wonld have saved much trouble and many lives it a few of the weak kneed congressman and heads of departments had been taken. The speaker was one of those who answered the call ‘‘Oa to Richmond,"” and he described the sit- uation very humorously, It didn't take long for both sides in the conteat to learn something. The southerners lesrned that one of them could not whip three Yankees, aud less eight or ten as they had boasted, The Yankees learned that the Johnnles could shoot almost as straight as they. The gov- ernment learned that it could not use green men llke old regulars, The men In the ranks had to learn that while all Americans were equal In one sense, In the court and field they had to obey orders, and recognize rank, The speaker gave a pleasing narrationof several inciden {ocluding the manner in which Abr ham Lincoln, “‘the greatest American who ever lived,” [Oheers] stopped the mutiny in & Wisconsin reglment, the boys objecting to thelr cfficers, think- ing they were cowardly. Lincola nd< dreesed them as ‘““men of Wisconsin,” and wito thls as a keynote, recogulz- Ing their cltizenship, he held them and lnsplred them, telling them they would not need to send back to Mis- sourl for commissioned officers, but that there was materlal In thelr own ranks for captains and colonels, Ia speakiog of the pensions, the speaker touched rather sharply the . | timidity of the evening paper, which The Nellie Burke 10 mile race and |hes for several days been harping lest hurdle and Iodian races are on Fri- |some politics should creep luto Decor- days programme, ation day services. Arrantic, In,, May 30. —Decoratlon Day was observed with the usual cere- monles. The turn out was unusually large and the day cool but clear, There was rather a small attondance at the races on acsount of the decora- tion celebration. The track was in excellent condition, . The people were sll right. It was the politiclans who were always trampinog about the sol- diers robblog the treasary. He urged the old soldiers not to feel that they were paupers, but to stand np like men, They were growing old, One by one they wonld be Inid away. Thefr graves would be decorated, They would not be forgotten, After another plece by the band, LIRUTENANT GOVERNOR MANNING waa Introduced amidet applause, He aked the question, Is the unlon worth the eacrifice mnde to save i After tho defeat of Bull Run ths query, What Is the union worthi was pereon— ally brovght home to every able bodind man ia the north, ‘s ft worth my life?’ was the iuterrogatory of which many felt the force. How that question was snewered, this day answors, The deeds jof the brave were a more eloquent answer to the query than any tongue could give, They had written fu blood the answer, The 3% unlon] mos: acd shall be preserved, auu this gener. otlon unanimously respond to that sentiment, aud no greater tribute could ba givon the fallen, than by ex- tolling the nnion, by deed an well as by word, Union and natlonality went hand in hand, As long sa the uuion wan kept, the llberly of the people, the higheat purpose of government, would be preserved, In closing, tho spoakor addressed the members of the Grand Army of the Ropublic, and the veterans iu geveral, Imprereing npon them the thought that no marble monument was 8o grand or sv Jasting s that eentlment cf gratitude, tht memory of thelr deeds, which would ever be cherished by the American people, The address was delivered feom manuserlpt, carefally prepared, and was closaly listened to. ‘MY COUNTRY 'TIS OF THER" was then sang by the audlence stand iog, after which HON, N. M. PUARY was introdnced. He spoke of the ns and trath to be learned from the deeds of the brave men whoso memorles was this day rospected. He announced his miselon to be rather to spesk to the Iliving than of the dead, 1In a very c earand for- cible manner the tpeak: r pressed upon the thoughts of the audienca the dutles of cltizonship. The brilliant presidential levees, the senate, the house, the courts, even the flag, were bat the materislity of the govern- ment, They were not the govern ment Itself, That was the svcial com- pact based upon mau's senso of moral obligation to his fellow-man. The fidellty of the citizen to the duties of citizenship waa the great lesson taught by the falten and the llving berocs. Aftor another relection by the band CHARLES M. HARL delivered an addrees which was one of: the best of tho day, 1t belng carefully prepared and finely dellvered, Mr. Harl s one of the most popular of the young orators of tho day, and hls selection a8 one of the speakera of the day was & compliment well bestowed, and it is eafe to say none were disappointed in his effort. It was to ba regretted that so many addresees aud ro lengthy & programmo preceeded him, as the audlence was pretty well tired of ora- tory by the time he was Introduced, and yet he held thelr attention re- markably well, THE OTHER EXERCISES conslsted of another well-rendercd anthem by St. Paul's church cholr, which completed the exerclses at the platform proper, Services were held at ‘‘the unknown spot”, conducted by Chaplain Mackey. The decorations here were very abun- dant and beautiful. Consplouous smong them was a very large and handsome wreath, prepared by Mus. A. O. Grabam. It was one of the awoetost tributes of the day, and ex. cited the admiration of all. It was after six o'clock before the decoratingof the graves was completed, and the gathering dispersed with the benedlsiion. The obseryance of the day as a whole was a grand success, and shows most clearly that here at least the in- terest In the day and the sympathy with what it signifies are by no means lessening.
