T! aversge press wire Is a very ‘‘rocky” thing, The press operator sits down with the expectation of a ‘“‘rosst,” and ho al- waysgotsit, When the people read of a fire or other disaster here and there in this wvast country, they scarcely take into con- sideration the hard and faithful labor it has csused one man, sitting listening to the click of » soun: and, supposing it is coming very fast, he is writing down the characters that go into print the next morning, never thinking that perhaps some of the readers of the paper will find in it the death notive of some of their own kin, Mven the operator sometimes reads of the death of his near relatives by the same report wire, Such & case can be cited in our owa city. 3 —~Mary F. Considerable attention was aitract- od yesterday to a notice painted on a board in blsck letters and stuck up in front of a Douglas street store, in the center of a mass of pud, orange peel, oto, It read: “‘Dadicated to the Memory of the City Council By Contractor Grant, the Washington Bam,” The whole thlng{;vu designed as a huge joke on . Grant, but it proved an abortion, The facts in the oaso are that Mr, Grant begun the work of oleaning off the Douglas street pavement yesterday, dolng so at his own expense although under no obligation to do so. ~The street was covered to a depth of several inches with mud, and he wanted to excavate the pavement beforelt was lost sight of forever. A few montha ago when he was lay- Ing the asphalt he requested permis. sion of the merchant in question to|T. Some one apparently thought it would be a good joke then to call him a Washiogton bum, and aceorcingly the monument was creoted as above describad.
