A Little Further Ligkt on Who struck Him Wiiu a Rock, As stated In yesterday morning's Bee, & man namod Battin, who had bsen at work on Captain Noyes' farm, near Mondamin, was found lging In & box oar, insensiblo and bloody, having recsived a blow, evi- dently from a iarge plece of rock, in the hands of some unknown per- SANS R4 A A At list are the following: Simon Eisemsn . . 60 The Rescne company have & eity lot and about §2(0 avd e 1 understood that there 1s a probabllity of thelrdo nsting that for the enterprise. If so, a ward will probably bo established for {njared and dlsabled firemen, and any orgau'z.tlons or Individuals deslring to have warda for speolal purposes, or spocially named, can doubtless arrange to that effeot. son, Battin was revived enough yestor. day to ba able to talk a little more abcut the sffalr, From hls stato- ment {t appears that he had been drloking some, and foll In company with & tramp, who prevalled on him to take a trip with him to Ill1- nols, 1t belng agreed that thoy would steal a ride in a box car. He told his tramp companion that he had only a Iittle money with him, but this little ovidently proved a soffizlent tempta- tlou for the tramp to ¢ven to comm!t murder, He recalled very little of what occarrod after eutering the car, but it scema to him thathe lay down for a sleep.” Some silver that he had in his right hand pants pooket was stolen, but = five dollar bill which he had In his other pocket escaped the thlef's notice, he probably thinking from the remark made about his having a little money, that the silver was all thero was to get. Whether thero was a struggle, or whether the tramp deliborarely slugged him as he lay aslecp, cannot be told. The rock found {n the car is about the 0123 of a brick, and about as sharp-edged. One of the edges I8 maried with blood, and accounts eaeily for the pecullar character of the ;‘undud on the back of the viotim's esd. PIRSCEg Va *Lydia E, Plnkham'’s great labora- tory, Lynn, Mass,, Is turning out mllifons of packages of her celebrated Compound, which are Felng sent to the four winds, and actually find their way to all lands under the sun and to the remotest confines of modern clvili- zation. —— THE GAMBLING HOUSES. They Don’t Think It Su Easy to Upen the Doors Again. The gambling houses seem shut to- night, and with little prospect of open- ing very soon. The shutting up was duelargely to the gamblera themselves, who got into a quarrel, cuu;'.ug one factlon to try to use the couucll to shut up the partloular games of the other faction. The councll, instead of ehutting oft keno, shat off faro as well, and then tho sports settlod back to see who could stand cold weather the longest, They have now compromised among themselves aud come to o matual underatanding, but the council does not scem disposed to recognize the truce and refuses to allow them to open egaiu; at lesst the police committee, or which Alder- man Wood is chairman, refuses to allow any to open. Tho resolution passed by the coun- oll ordering the city marshal to act under the dlrection of the poilce committee in enforclng vhe ordinance forbidding gambling, is stillin force, and there seems to be no dis position to weaken on it. If there was any disposition to do so it would be very awkward, at least, to attempt it. The councll can hardly have the cheek to publicly re- voke the resolution. The clty mar- shal will hardly risk his neck by allowing gambling to go on; even if he had a sly intimation from the alder- men that such a course weuld be agreeable to them. It looks now as it the councll would have to block the track openly and publioly, or else the doors will be kept shut. Alderman Wood, who is at the front in charge of the matter, will surely not weaken, The gamblers themselves have no idea he will, and hence the future looks rather glam for them, and some have sottled themselves down to the bellef that there will be no more ublic gambling houses in Counctl luffs until there is a new councll, - e —— Karamazoo, MicH , Feb. 2, 1883, I know Hop Bitters will bear rec- ommendation honestly. All who use them confer upon them the highest encomiums, and kive them oredit for meking cures—all the proprletors olaim for them. I have kept them since they were firat offered to the publle, They took high rank from the firat, and maintained it, and are more called for than all others com- bined, 8o long as they keep up their reputation for purity and usefulness, 1 shall continue to recommend them— something I have never before done with any other patent-medicine, J. J. BABCOCK, M. D. HELPING THE HOSPITAL. Bome of Those Who Have Given Money as Well as Words, The proposed plan of establishing & hospital here seems to meot with hearty support from many and should from all, That Coucc!l Biuffs needs such a hospital is apparent. The poor mwan who was found In a box car, bleeding and insensible from the mur- derous assault of some wunknown tramp, Is a case In point, Ho was carried to the police station, tusked into a pen too filthy for any human belng, and there lay on a cot in which vermin abound. The calaboose {8 no fit place, all admlt, and yet that {s the ounly place now, Such inetances are of frequent occarrence and everyone of them should cause the blush to come to all citizans who take aoy pride in Courcll Bluffs' reputa- tion for even decent treatment of the sufforiog and unfortunate. Every. one should take some practical in. terest In the establlshment of a hos. pital, Those who are able should give large sums, but those who are not should remember that the small a.aounts foot up Into largs ones, As roon enough has bsen con- tributed to show that the enterprlso has strong enough hold on the pocket books and hearts of the people to 1o sura ita sucoess, there will ba little diffisulty In getting the additlonal ald needed from oounty, city and rallway companles, —————- A drlver whose name s Joo Glane, When badly frostbitten in Msine, Ovalda’t wear his shoe, S) what did he do? 8t. Another Victim of the Sulcidal Mania. A fow days ago there wasa report that another msan had hung himeelf near Horn's park, The report seemed 80 hazy that it could not eaeily be traced to apy reliable source, and sano corpso was to bo found, it was thought that it wes an idle romor, growlng, perhaps, out of some one of tho other euicidal oases, the mistake boing iu the loeatlon, It now sppears that the roal cause of the report was the fact that & man did really try to hang him- self, but was discovered aud taken down by his friends before his wind was completoly gone, and now seoms to be sshamed of himself, thongh it {= not at all improbable that he will ogain yleld to eome fresh impulee and mske another at- tempt. The man i3 u teamster, who hae of 1ate had much family trouble, due largely, 1 is olasimad by the fasy of his being given too much to driok. His wife has lately left him, and he had become very despondent, THE Bk a few days ago gave an account of a man applylng at Geandy's drag atore for poison, and on belng press- ed, admitting that he wanted it for sulcidal purposes, Thls proves to be the sume man. Having thus tried to get poison, and then tried the rope, it is not improbable that be will make o third and last attempt. Hlis friends are watching him as closely as poesible, but he may elude thelr vigilance yet, and make a more suc- cesaful play of the fool's part. A Bplendid Remedy for Lung Dis- eases.
