The Entertaiment at Boyd's Opers House Last Night, ““Walting for the Verdlet" was played last night at the opers house, to » large and appreciative audlence. From the beginning right throngh to the end it kept thy audience in a state of enthuslasm, and seldom have the walls of the opera house resonnded with such marks of approbation as were glven last night, even If it were our amateur troupe. Most of the old chaesoters were here again in thelr reproduction, and the steady go of each aot, without a hitch, showed that the members, one and all, had gone through a short bat E-Inluklng study. To enumerate each character would more fally glve those ladles and gentlemen thelr credit for their grand performance, but each and every one ocontributed thelr share to the success 80 well merited by them. Jonathan Roseblade (Jasper's father) was mosu oarefully and aptly rendered by W§ Tartle, a performance which we don't «ften find, even with professionals. And his own Jasper, as played by Charles McDonald, was a most eclen- titio and masterly piece of scting, and one that was worthy of our own townsman, and we heartlly say a word of pralse for Charley. 1. H. Danlels in the part of Lord Eimore, did well, -Eeuhlly in the woods scene, Lieat. Forville was taken by J. J. Neligh + a carefal study had made that o: o . the leading parts. Mac, as the heavy villaln, was immeunse, and tali', ‘wok the hoase by storm, he belog v usand with his shooter, and after this the boys will give Mac a wide berth, E. A. O'Brien, as Jous Hundle, was a_splendld place of act- Ing, and as aide to Mac furnished thoge bits of villalny so needed, and not tled up In tissue paper either. W, 0. Sanders, In the psrt of Blinkey Brown, was splendid comedy and far- nished the comlc dressing that was needed to keep the audience up to a certain pitch for the splendid and woll deploted tableaux C. White, as the country parson, J, O. Chaney, as Sir Henry Harrington, and the Counsel Stanly, were nicely played. Graiton, a8 the defendant’s counsel, was really a lawyer, and added - materlally to the success of the trial scene, Courtorler, servant, gamekeeper, were all an efti clent body. And last, but not least. we come to the ladles. Mrs. Eiliot, a8 Jasper's wife, acted and sald her part nobly and aided in those touch- Ing scenes which were perceptibly no- tlced In the audlence. Df . Geo, Shields, as Sarah Sawyer, was a splen- did plece of acting and showed up the love of woman {n all her enobling traits, and In the words of Blinkey, “‘There's nothing like it."” A DIAMOND SOLITAIRE. The Police Force Give the Marshal a Surprise. When the night force of the polica appeared at the police court rooms lan- evening for roll call, Judge Bunek« entered, and calling the attention of | those present he addresscd City Mar- | shal Angell, saylng: I have the pleasure of being dele- gated by the officers of the police de- | partment and by his other frlends o | present Marshal Angell with a token | o our esteem and respect, on the oc- | cation of his handing over his official otar and resignation of cflise. If he falled to olimb the golden stairs cer. | taiuly he did not fail to climb the stairs of far greater value, leading to the esteem and respect of his brother | officers and of the officers associated ! with him in his official capacity. If | he has failed to perform the duties of his office to the satlsfaction of all of the people of the clty I should have considered it more through ' an unfortunate combination of olrcumstances and “he large responsi | bilitles of the office that not one ou' | of a hundred of the clt!zus under- | stood or appreciated. Further Detalls Of the wreck of the Peterson, Oapt. W. A, Van Orman, master and owner of the steamer *‘‘Peterson,” which was wrecked on the secoud pler of the Un on Pacific bridge Monday, chll duy v office and furnis 6. sume additional particolars con. St affalr. The work of constructing the boat was begun last fall and ocontinued through the winter, belng superin. tended by himself. - The boat was de slgned to tow rafts, haul wood and take out hunting and fishing par- tles. Competent judges pronounced it one of the prettlest models they had ever seon, and the owner expected to reap a good profit from his Inves:- ment. the entire coat cf the boat being only about §550. On Monday at 1 o'clock all was roady for the start on the trlp. Van Orman had made inquiries for a good englneer, and upon the recommenda- tlon cf eeveral had hired a msn sup- posed to be first-claes. Ho says, how- ever, that he was no good and left the bank with but twenty-five pounds of steam on, an amount wholly inad- cquate to stem the ragiog torrent of the Big Muddy. Capt. Van Orman was at the wheel and the engineer was the only other paesenger on the ill- fated vessel. The Peterson left the bank nloely until she got her nose off, when Van Orman called to the engineer to “‘give it to her! Pat on steam!" The boat commenced drifting and he again asked, “Why don't you give it to her,” to which the engineer replied that the throttle was already wide open. Van Orman then looked at the wauge and saw that there was but twenty poundsof steam on. He knew he was ‘“a gone gosling” then, and told the engineer to get ready to jump, st the same time halling the shore and asking them to send out boats, which he says they did not do at onoe, The steamer struck the side of the pler first, knocking'off her gunwale and bounded back. She then struck it a second time and capsized. When the oaptain saw the water rushing tn and the engine tumbling out he jumped for the pler but fell in the drift wood and was twice pulled under, but finally swam clear of it and had nearly reached the shore when Charles Weat came out with his boat. He told him to ‘‘never mind me” but go to the rescue of the engineer, who was olinging to the pler and who bhe knew could not swlm. West, however, palled Van Orman in. | to his boat, and meantime a Dane near by shot a skiff oat and rescued the engineer, 8o that 21l arrived safely on the shore, after narrowly escaplng death, The boat went into a thousand pieces, and only a few wheels and bits of machinery were collected. Mr. Van Orman expects to commence work on another steamer soon. Tues- day, atter the raln, the water rose and carrled off his last small boat, valued at $25, so that he has nothing loft at all worth navigating in, A BRILLIANT SCHEME. There has been considerable com- plaint and fault finding of late as to the workiug of the Warlng system of sewers, and many were ready to predict that it would prove a fraud. The troublehas been largely owing to the carelessr ees ¢f persons who should have known better, For instance after a long search a huge paving stone was discovered in the sewer at Twolfth street, near Gray's printlng honse, Yesterday two bricks wrappedin cloth were diecovered and removed in the same locality. Itis claimed that both these obstructlons are tracesble to a drain layer aund there will ro doubt be some trouble if the gulliy party is found out. Tae big sewer In North Omaha be- came clogged n&yelterdny and Street Commiseioner Meaney found that it was choked up by s stump which had washed Into it. The stump was haul- ed out with the ald of a mule and the blockade raised successfally. A MIDNIGHT BLAZE. A Lopng Run After an Undiscoverable Fire. About midnight last night an alarm ‘was turned In from box 26, B. & M. freight house and a great blaze which lighted up the southern sky indicated that a big fire was fn progress some- where. All the apparatus in the department turned out and despite the desperate conditlon of the streets made the run to the U. P, depot, from which the fire seemed as far away as ever ard the chase was given up. Some few of the firemen went as far south as Hickory street and still saw no signs of the burning mass. Half of those who made the ran fell fnto unprotected places on the streets and it Is a wonder someone was not killed. The fire was no doubt in La Platte or Bellevue, and the heavy raln amnd storm which fell when the flames were highest must have quenched it. ———— POLICE PICKINGS. Disposition of Several Uases. The hearlog of the case of J, Adams, allns Roynolds, the alleged confidence man, came up In police court Taes- day sfternoon, the charge against him betng “suspiclous character.” The prisoner at first demanded a jury trial, but afterwards consented to be tried by the court. He took an appeal, and his bonds were fixed at $500, bail being readily glven. D. Van Meter, charged with re ing an offizer, obtained a jury trlal, and the jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to the court to assess as light & punishment as possible. Judge Baneke fined him $10 and costs, amounting to $9.90, and sentenced him to one day's im. prisonment in the county jail. The trial of John Green and nine others, arrested for trespass and riot at the sand bank, will come up next M :nday at 10 o'clock a. m Willie Martin, a 14-year old lad ar- rested some days ago for stealing a bolt ofiflace from Crulckshank & Co., was asrdeted again yesterday by Hans Timm for stealing a lot of goods from Tom Murray.
