The Daily Bee. GOUNCIL BLUFFS. Thursdav Morning, May 3. T WUBACRIPTION BATRS: 8y Usirler, Ay Mall (OMoe: No. 7 Pearl Street, Near rondway, emer————————————— MINOR MENTION, —Ses Joseph Reiter's spring styles, —Additional looal on seventh page.| A crossing has been ordered over Tenth street on Third avenue. The Young Men's Christlan assocla- tlon Is teying to arrange for a lecture here at an early date by General Howard. The circus paste brigade was yester. day sdorning the bill boards with the glowing announcement that the only and orginal is to be here on the 19th, The mock trial so often announced and as often postponed by the Y. M. 0. A., 1s now docketed for next Mon- day evening at the rooms of the asso- clation, The official order has gone forth that the large old bullding owned by John Danforth, nearly opposite Jus- tice Vaughan's residence s to be moved. The papers were filed yesterday by which Margaret Boulder seeks to get a divorce from Joseph P. Boulder, her husband, she claiming that he has deserted her. Mayor Bowman has appointed to the police force James Mullen, who has lived here some time and who has a wide acquaintance and many friends. The boys arrested for breaking open a carpenter shop and steallng some tools were before Justice Vaughan yesterday and had their cases continued to Saturday. W H. Brooks was arrested by Officer Warner for disturbing the peace by fighting. As there seemed to be others m'xed up in the affair the case will be left hanging until all the facts and personages can be got at. H. Clarence Eddy, who, ranks as one of the finest organfsts in the whole land, 1s to give a concert in the Presbyterlan church here, Friday evening May 11, asslsted by Mies May Phbesnix, who as a contralto has become a great favorite in Chicago. A. Loule is having his restaurant filled up in the most attractive and elegant manner, the cellings and walls belng decorated as finely as any in the land, George R. Beard having done the work. With new carpet and other furnishings, the place will be made a little palace. Adolph Bill, who was let out of jall ncf)-y or two ago, having been imld for a violatlon of the revenue law, celebrated his release in such a glorlous, or rather Ingloriously, drunk that he is now back {n his old quar- ters, belng unable to psy the $9 60 fine imposed wpon him in the police court, H. L. Hall, the proprietor of the Pacific house billiard hall, yesterday purchased a fuli rigged yacht, In miniatare. It is about two feet long and elghteen inches high. It was made by a German, whom it took two months to complete. It is a very fine plece of workmanship. John Ahles delivered his new lec- tare on psychology to a few invited friends last night. They all seemed reatly pleased and steps will doubt- fen be taken to get him to dellver it ublicly, as it contains much interest- ng and Instroctive thought as the frult of his close study of the latest German philosophers, The danger of overcrowding the mind s {linstrated in the case of a little Denison girl, aged about ten ears. She was an uncommonly bright child but in preparing for the recent sshool exhibition she over studied and is now lu a most pitiable condition, Her memory s apparently gone and she s vergiug on the border of idiooy. Althongh several weeks have passed since the exhibition she shows no evi- dences of recovery aud it is feared that her mind {s permanently rained. — Bulletin, The case of the state vs, Henry Boye was on trial before Justice Schurz yesterday, Lindt & Hart ap- pearing for the prosecution and John Balrd for the defendant. Boye was arrested for shooting a dog belonging to Theodore Bisch, and claimed as a defense that the dog was chu!n%the chickens on the farm on which Boye was employed, and his boss had told him to get the gun and shoot the dog, which he did. Half the day was taken up with the case, and the de- clslon Is reserved by the justice asa plece of news for to-day. Under the reorgauization of the po lice force, there will be no .city of- ficer stationed at the Unlon Pacific de- pot. It will be remembered that the custom of having a olty policordan there grew out of the reported abuses to which emigrants wore subjeated, and to which attentlon was particularly called by the shooting of one of the employe there. Then the confidence games were 80 numerous that it was deemed best to keep an cfiicer there, Now that the city hus drawn away its officer, it remains to be seen how the experiment will work. So far as the tralnmer are coucerned, they have the eame authority to nip the con- fiderce men as police officers, and there are the railway companies po- leemen also on duty there. They know, or cught to kuow, the crocked men, aud it remains to be seen whether they will prevent thelr working, Complete stock of cornice poles and curtain fixturesat Harknees Bros.’ e Mrs. H. Lee has moved her dress- making, stamping, and _strawwork CACING THE TIGER. The Gambling Places Are to be Closed up Tight. 80 Bays the Oity Oouncil, and the Doors Begin to £wiong To. ‘Why This Sudden Attempt to Close up the City. To the surprise of many the olty oouncll has ordered all gambling places In the olty to be closed. Such an edlot, If It means what It pretends to mean, should have been lssued a long time ago. Councll Bluffs has the reputation of having more gam. bllng -places, for its size, than any other olty—even in the west, There are all sorts of games running here, and besides the opportunity glven for regular ply their avooation, there are all sorts of Inducements for boys and workingmen, olerks and other employes to stake and lose what little money they have. Itisa notorlous fact that gambling has had its own way here right along, the only So long as this was pald, vitles here seemed to care littlo w.av was done or how It was done, The new order of the council In- structing the marshal to close all gambling places, s promlsed on the surface to make a complete revolution, How strictly It will be enforced, and how long it will be carrled out, re- malns to bo seen. Bon Marke yee- terday gracefully slammed to his doors and locked them, saylng that he did not propose to fight, but would comply with the request made. The men at Pat Lacey’s were also turned loose and the game stopped, and others are supposed to follow suit, Some of the aldermen on being asked what it means, say they have got tired of the free and easy way in whieh gambling has been allowing to ran its ocourse, and that it is time for ® general cleaning out, as other cltles have shut up their gambling houses, or driven the game into attios and back rooms, It is whispered that if Marshal Jackson does not enforce this order that his head will come off and roll into the basket. Some Intimate that the difficulty {n enforcing the order will give an excute for those who are not particularly in love with Jack to get him crowded out of the place for neglect of duty. This ‘seems foollsh talk, however, as Jackson will not be backward, and will have little troub'e in getting the order observed, for the present at least, There is another featare of the i - uation which Is rather interestii The gamblers are not agreed amo thewselves, and there seems son.« littie bitterness, one trying to swallow the other up or force him out of bus inees. Oae of the fraternity declores that he recelved work, purporting t« come from another leading vne of the fraternity, that the latter must hav. twenty per cent of his game, or he would take steps to shut it up, anc that he had Inflaence with the author ities so that steps would be taken i1 that direction. The Invitation to giv. up a share of the prcfits was promptl) declined. The fact that the gamblers so cheer fully and promptly closed up their places yesterday indicates that th. order issued by the council was ncu very repulsive to them It seems that the old stand-bys here felt tha* there were too many dabbling in t} business, and dividing up among th many what they thought ought to b corfined to the few. It looksas ! they were themselves the cause «: the order belng issued, or at least that they consented to the shutting up as rangement, their desire belng freeze out and kill off some of t}. smaller games, and glve those wh survived additional advantages whe. the time came to open up again, In fact it looks very much as if t} apparent reform was in reality only . buelners stroke to reduce the numb.: - of gambling houses and games, g0 th: when buelness {s resumed it will be run by a few instead of by many. The affalr certalnly has a strang look. To have the council sudden order the gambling houses shut u) and to have the fraternity so quick! obey, indicates one of two thing: either that the order is just what t! chief gamblers wanted, ae a strike « ! business policy, or else that the a thorities are much to blame for nc closing the gambling places before, they can do so as easily as it ncw seems, It 15 to be hoped that the ord means all that it pretends to, but t: . public cannot but be susplelon at such a sudden and radios change, and will watch the futare with much Interest. The pre: diction is that the houses will open 1 |/ after a little, and it will then becon more apparent what the real causes « the shctting up are, If itis a ger: ine manifestatson there can be no «x cuse for not keepleg the houses slL. up from now on forever. At the meeting which passed ti order, Mayor Bowman presided » Aldermen Eicher, Janes, Keating u Word were present, and all voted . favor of the resolution, which was follows: Resouvep, By the common cour '} of the city of Council Bluffs, Tow . That the city marshal of eaid city s bereby directed at once to clore .l gambling houses, in said city, wh e tde games of keno, roulette, red ¢ 4 black, high ball poker hazard, and Il f chance, Including faro, pl .- id olty, and If said games i -e not closed at once, sald marseal s hereby directed to file complai.t agalnst the partles forthwith. There was a rather mysterious shooting affalr which ooccurred on Main street, at the corner of Ninth avenue, Taesday night. The police seem to know little about it, but from what can be learned it appears that a young man stopped at Anderson’s saloon about midnight and tried to have those Inside open up to give him a drink, They refuslng to open, he besame angry and pulliog out a re- volver fired through the window. Some one !nslde returned the fire lodging a bullet In the young man’s shoulder, the wound not belng very serlons, however, e e Why be wesx! Why not be healthy, robust, and strong, by using | Brown's Iron Bitters? The Sunday Law, The saloons have receivad notice to keep thelr places shut on Sunday as the ordinance now on the books re- quired. About twice a year this no- tification is given, and it is strictly enforced for a foew weeks, or nearly 80, and then Sunday gets smashed all topleces again. In these spasmodic periods of stringency the ones who really have to close are those who have no back doors to thelr saloons, while those who have back doors and front curtalns get the Sunday trade on the qulet, at least that part of it that does uot go to the beer gardens, which teem never to be Interfered with, The order is In fact intended to brace upd the esaloon men some, and keep them from running too openly on Sunday. There have been of late many disgusting street scenes in front of saloons as people are com-: ing to and golng from church, and hence & check must be put to the Sunday business, The order to shut up, however, should be a equare deal for all, and 1f the authorities mean “‘close,” 1t should apply to beer gar- dens and saloons having back doors, as well uws those which are not thus convenlently for plylng the trade on | the qulet.
