Everybody is Invited to attend these meetings, Exocavations have been commenced for the erection of a 100 foot exten- slon to the southwest wing of the Union Pacific depot in this clty, to be oocupled by the express companies. This does not look much as-if the busl- ness now done there was to be trans- fered to Broadway, even if the com- Gnl‘y, could Induoe the city to give up ‘nion avenue for & dammy track. ‘With the reorganization of the po- lioe fosce should come new uniforme, in faot as well as in name, Asit is now some sre in cltizens’ clothes, some dn blouses with brass buttons, some ‘wear hats, soms wear oaps. Mc, Stemhilder, the furnitare man- ufacturer, has met with another acci- dent., It will be remembered that a short time ago he had the end of his thumb taken off in some of the ma. chinery, and that has just got nicely headed when he now has met with a still more serlous accldent, having got his hand caught sgaln, this time losing the tips of three fingers, one being gone to the fiest joint, Ho Is out and about bat carries his hand in a sling. The soasp man with his dlce box, who occuples the street corner under licanse from the city, seems to have a way of counting the dice himself so rapidly that the buyer of the chance oannot follow him, and the total, as he makes it, is generally some worthless artiole of cheap jewelry. And all must admit that our fears are not groundless, since witnessing the terrible dynamite ex- plosion of September, 1881, in our olty. Sron after the dynamite explosions a gontleman whose home s situsted within 1he radius of probable de- struction, wrote a petition, which was signed by along list of tax pay- ing citizens snd presented to the mayor and coanoll, praying that body to remove the magazine out of the corporation, This petition was en- tirely lgnored — nothing was ever heard of it after belng sent in for thelr consideration. A UNION DEFPOT. If the Other Roads will Unite the Union Pacific will Join. There has been more or less talk for some time concerning a union depot here, and the desirability of such an enterprise hss been long felt. The present Unloa Paclfic depot 1s too far away from the center of the city, as all admit, and there have been a few who have advocated even the glving up of Unlon avenus ia order to get the Unlon Paclfic te run a dummy traln up to Broadway. Whilo this was by no means practioal, nor in all respects desirable, still the fact remains that present depot Is too far away. The running of a dummy traln to Broadway would not remedy the mat- It would be simply glving t emall loo)! business to the dummy ln- stead of the street car. The through business, traufer, etc., would still be done at the present Unlon Pacifis depot. What seems to be needed in Ooun. oll Bloffs fs & unlon depot. If the roads ronnlog int) Qomnell B uffs could be .induced to bulld such a depot, Instead of haviog little shan. ties scattered abont as local depots, and have such unlon depot sltuated nearer the ocenter of the oity, it would cause the Unfon Pacifisto join in the plan and make is depot at that polnt also, Tae Bex is informed on what ap- pears to be reliable authority that the Unfon Pacific would do this very thing if the other roads would agree. If thissort of & plan oould be worked up on a practical basle, Council Biuffs ocould have what it needs, and instead of a transfer, located clear out of the way, there would be a convenlent center for all the bual- ness now done there. The matter should be talked up and thought over, and perhaps some of those who have justly opposed giving Unlon avenue to the Unlon Paclfic for the sake of get- tlog a dummy train, would help in furthering an enterprise for getting a union depot located at least a mile nearer the olty than the present Ualon Paclfie, The revival meeting at the Baptlst church last evenlog was largely at- tended.
