J. F. Peterson, of Hazel Dall, lost 8 babe by death on Saturday last. The little one was only six months of age. Permits to enter matrimony were yesterdry given to Daniel Palmer and Sarah E. Morrls, of Oakland; also to H. L. Fonts and Rosanna Thomas, both of Loveland- Willlam Rinzenhoft, the tallor ar. rested for assanlt, had his hearing yes- terday before Justice Schurz and was discharged, it appearing that he acted i self r?e(onu. Mike Osborne's only offense reemed to be that he was without money, so after belng lodged In the calaboose love! night he was yesterday turned loose. J. T. Hart has filed an information before Justice Vaugan, ocharging one J. B, Stephenson with the larceny of & lot of hickory wood valued at about $2.00. Oonstable Skinner was sent out to serve the papers, Mr. Martin, of Olnclanati, who has rrovod very successful as an evange- Iat, has commenced a series of apeclal meotings at the Baptist church In this clty, the evening meetings to beginat 7:30 o'clock. All are Invited and Christ!an workers especially, D. J, O'Neill has commenced an action for slander against Stephen James, clatming $10,000 damages, be- cause the latter sald that he had stolen & pocket.book belonging to Mrs, James, He says the charge s untrue, and thinks it has hurt his repatation and feelings to the extent Efcher, James, McMahon, Sieden- tapf and Wood met yesterday aft: noon, first as & board of health and afterwards as a board of equallzation. The councll chamber belng ocoupled aa a suparior court room, the fathers met at Judge Jamen' office, and, as & board of health, the maln business of the meeting was to elect a oity physi- olan, The names of Dr, Macrae and Dr, Lacey were prosented, and two informal ballots were had, resulting in each of these gentlemen recelving three votes, Asa final result, Dr, Macrao was elected, recelving four votes to Dr, Lacey’s two, This matter being mettled, the questlon of the city’s cleanliness, or rather lack of cleanliness, was taken up. Mr. Sladentopf called attentlon to the fact that the chief of police had been publishing a notice, ordering the stroets and alleys to be cleaned, He thought that this was the city marshal’s business, and should be directed by the board of health rather than the clty councll. The board of health was given all needed power to have streets or alleys cleaned, and the expense charged to;adjacent property, or to prosecute the owners thereof. Some practical action, he thought, should be taken, for mere notices were soon forgotten, and the thing would blow over soon, as it had done before, Judge Jones thought something ought to be done for some of the places In theclty were in a terrible condition. Ald, Wood romarked that there were many who were depositing manure and filth on vacant lota in the city, This ought to be stopped, The oity marshal had suggested gotting some signs to plan at such places THE DAIL) AALAY AJAAAMIA Official Partiality There has been much talk about the partially shown In the enforcement and non-enforcement of ordinances. 1t neoms that If anyone Is erecting a baliding or making any improvements which will prove a benefit to the city there 18 always some one ready to com- plain of some technleal violation, or sapposed violation of the law, that the bricks and lumber are obstructing the sldewalk and street, or that shavings bout, or thatjsomething appening, whereas other ordinances and tE: same ordinances In other ocases are allowed to go un- notlced, In clearing up of alleys and streets this has been notlce- able also, In the matler cof the oar ordinance there s likowlse cause for such complaint, and a petition to that effect has al- ready been presented to the councll and the facts are to be Investigated. Alderman Jamen' officlal eye yos- terday rested upon one herd of twenty.one cows roaming at wlll, without any hindrance. In contrast with this comes the statement of John O'Donnell that his cow was put in the und, and that he sought her release r: vain, He wanted to offset the costs by a bill agalnat the clty, but conldn’t do that, and then he offered the casb, but was sent from one official to an- other, until tired of the red tape, he broke open the pound and tcok his cow ont, Now he is threatoned with prosecution for that. One thing s certaln, there must be in the enforcement of city ordinances a falr deal for all, and, as long as there is not, there will be great grambling. The councll should look up some of these statements, and see what the real causes of complaint are, and, on getting at the bottom facts, they cannot be too qaick in straight- ening them out, In fevers, malaria, heartburn, eto., nothing s clal as Brown's Iron Bitt: 1f you are not married, write the Mar. risge’ Fund snd Mutual Trust Associs- tion, Cedar Rapids, Iows, for circulars explaining the plan, f5.8m, biliousness, 0 benefi- Oholoe nelections of Bummor Silks and Dress Goods, to be found at Hark- ness Brothers, Work on Main Street. The contract having been let to Mr, Moore for the filling in ef lower Main street and bringing it to grade, it was warning the publio to forbear, and then prosecute the offenders after that, Hethought this & pretty good suggestion, Alderman Eicher called attention to the fact that many were using Indlan crcek as a place to dump manure and offal, and in some places two-thirds of tke creek had been filled up so that the opposite bank was belng cut away, and there was also dnngar of high water taking away bridges, This, too ought to be stopped. Alderman Sledentopf offered a roso- lution Instructing the clty marshsl to glive publio notice of the determina- tlon of the board of health to ol an up the city, and that after five d: ya, if property owners did not compiy with the request thus made, . 10 board would ses that the nulsanc.s were removed at the expense of 1.6 property, tand that those negleoti: g would be liable to a penalty besld: s, The board selected as a commit: s to supervise and direct the marshal 12 this work Messrs, Etcher, Wood a.d Keating, Adjournment was then taken un'il the ficst Monday in May, the time u.t for the regular annual meeting, The aldermen then transform 'd thmolvu‘lneo a olt; i :lun&l. The council also ivstracted the ity englneer to stake out the road fr .o the end of Graham avenue out ‘o Raj AE: and to survey the fall wic.a, to define the street running north of town from Mills street to Avenue G. The bids for the bullding of the vow olty jall were opened, and the com: teo instruoted to make a oont. with the lowest responsible bid: -+ named, The attention of the readers of Tun Bze oannot but be attracted by the card of Casady & Oroutt's exclusive carpet house, which appears in an- other column, As all know who have visited this establishment, it s one of the most complete of any In the west, and the stock belng entirely new and from the best manufactories, with the prices reasonable, it 1a not to be won. dered at that their trade is large and steadlly increasing. There was a vory large congregation at the Presbyterian church Sunday morning to listen to Rev. Dr. Mo- Meekin, Next Sunday is the last of that reverend gentleman's supply, the three mouths for which he was se- oured having expired. He expeots to return to his home and family in Ot. tawa, Canada, It is now oxpected that at an early date Rev, Mr, McCoy, of Fort Dodge, who was elected pastor of the church here some months 8go, will secure a release from his pastorate there and enter actively upon the dutles of pastor here, Michsel O'Brien, who has been a sectlon hand of the Unlon Paolfic here for three , has for the past few days exhibited such aigns of mental aberration that he was yesterday brought before the Insane commls- sloners. It was deemed best to send him out to the poor farm to rest for a few days and get the aloohol out of im, rather than send him to the asylum, it being belleved that he will . oon be ali right . Thege has been so much talk about bringing Maln street to grade that many have got listless about it, and consider it aa only one of the usual incidents of the return of spring. In fact some of the property owners have negleoted rais- ing thelr bulldings, proorastination have brought in the past no serious results, Some time last fall the coun- cll let & contraot for raleing the side- walks to grade, and the contractor golug at his work found that he would have to leave many front doors and sllls under ground, and the owners and occupants of such bulldings raised such a hue and cry that he was obliged to quit. The councll let the matter go with the understanding that the work should be done this spring, thus glving an opportunity to have the bulldings ruised In the meantime, Yesterday there was another warn. ing given that they had better pre- pare ua some of them would find them- selves in the hole, and it is expeoted that now the work will go right along, whether all the property owners are ready or not. It fa necessary to do so in order to be ready for the paving, and it is also necessary In O!Sm' to havethe street passable. It has long been a disgrace to the city, belng fall of holes and “‘no bottom’ piaces, and even in dry weather the ups and downs were altogether too numerous and abrupt to permit of comfortable travel by E)ot or horse, It s high time that Maln atreet, one of the most prominent and needful thoroughfares In the city, if not the most so, should bo put in good condition, and that right epeedily, and it ts to be hoped that the prediction now made will be realized, 2#-The Diamond Dyes always do more than they claim to do.
