Loule is treating the front of his restaurant to s new coat of palnt, and making other improvements. The ocolored forger, who turned a $13 check on a clerk in Clark's drog store, has not been captured yet. Leave to commit matrimony was on Satarday given to John Elder, of Shelby, and Miss Jessle Baroh, of Loveland, City Marshal Jackson has filed & complaint against one O'Donnell, for breaking open the city pound. The ease comes up to-day, CoLLecrioNs,—Promptly attended to by Pottawattamle County Collec- tlon Agency. Front office, with N, Schurs, over 4190 Broadway. It Is & matter of general gratifion- | tion that Rev, Father McMenomy has declded to go ahead with the erection of a large and elegant church bulld. All Knights of No. 40 K, of P, are requested to bo at Castle hall In Everett's block to-night without fail, there belng business of importance to attend to. Glenn avenue will probably not be ned up until after the completion of the water works, so that the present engine house can be done away with or relocated. Last evenlng Rev. Mr, Sherrill, pastor of the First Congregational church of Omaha, preached in the Oongregational church here In ex- change with Rev. Mr, Hamlin, Macedonia is stirred with 1 . tlon because two youths of that p! gave an exhibition in the ‘‘manly art” on Sunday, The Tribune warns the young men to reform or migrate. Harry Birkine has placed on Trx Bez table an excellent photograph of the subsiding reservolrs of the Coun- oll Blaffs water works, of which he is the engineer. The photograph Is one of Burke's and {s most excellent, showing up as well as it can well be done in a plotare, The tin roof of the lustitution for the deaf anddumb is belng thoroughly repaired. A sorew Is belng put in every plate of tin, and the head sold- ered, this taking 756 gross of screws. It don't look as it wind or water could Talse much havoo with it now, The Chautauquan literary and scien- tifio olrcls have secured the Hon, W. J. Armstrong to lecture at Dohany's hall on the t of May 4th. Bub- jeot: “London Soclety.” He Is so well known throughout the ocountry | Peiges as one of the most ular that the publie wlfio pupm.p:‘k::-' treat, and surely will not be disap- polnted. Rev Thomas Maher, whose mental condition does not seem to be very healthy, was arrested as a vagrant Satarday, he being found wandering about, and entering houses without any Inyitation, use & half dollar in taking a trip to ©maha, 50 as to give Councll Bluffs & rest for a while, Mike O'Brien, who seems to be & mo?l:“hh hu;l, was s‘;thl 0 L) rom & m! crowd of men who were bound to hang him, He was locked up at the police station, it being the intention of the chlef to have sanity tested. Yesterdsy morning he induced Officer Tynon to let him have a smell of fresh alr, and the moment he got » snlff he took to his leges and ran away like » deer, and has not been seen since, At » meeting of those Interested in the Couuoll Bluffs and Northern was chosen engineer, and instruoted to losate the line to Orescent Olty at once, it belng understood that he commenoce with a force next Tuesdsy. The secretary, Mr. Bowman, was in- strueted to prooure an office at once. gc ao-nlunr on solicl subserip- ns reported progress, and adjourn. ment was taken until this evening at 8 o'clock, at the same place. Frank Ashton and J. W. Doran, two yo men who are e in the soap box racket, by which un- sophiscated are induced to buy little boxes supposed to contaln fabulous sums of money, were arreated Satur- day and lodged in jall to awalt a hear. Ing. Thelr effects conslated of a lot ot these soap boxes, but not a dollar was found in lnLon. of the boxes, They reaisted on belng arrested by officers Leanard and Barhyte, and will have to answer that charge also, Thelr :ul will probably reach a hearing to. ay. The case brought sgainst N, J. Bond, for obstructing Broadway, by his bullding, scales, eto., was oxcnod on Saturday before J’ndgo yles- do project Into the street, but in de- fonse it Is olalmed that it ls & benefit rather than a nulsance to that part of the olty. The case was not concluded, but will probably be finished up this week, though what day Is not very easy to predict, aa there is a large ar- ray of witnesses, Mr. Marein, of Olnclnnatt!, the well known evangelist, will hold a ser- fes of meetings at the Baptist church, ocommenoing this evening at 7:30. All are cordially invited, Christlan work- ers especially, Rev. Mr. Mackay, the rector of 8t. Paul's church, last evening pointed out the Importance of music In the services of religion. His Sonday evening lectures are creating much In- terest, and causing Increasing au- dlences. Those who came In over the Mil- waukee & St. Paul Saturday evening report & heavy hail storm between Peorsla and Portsmouth, the sizes of the hall stones differing, according to the judgment and consclences of the narzators, but all agreelng that they were unusually large, The contract for bullding a new vl:{ will joll, In mccordance with the plaa ready described In Tur Bek, groblbly be let this week, and the ullding will be pushed forward to an early completion, There has long been a need for such a bullding, the present one belng a disgrace in every reapect, and not fit even for a pound. T. J. SBtephenson and Joseph Mar- tes were complained of on Saturday for deposliting shavings In the street. They are employed in bullding im- provements now belng made on jolsts, ete., Broadway, and, in fittin, made some shavings whflh the wind scattered about. On assuring the offi- olals that they would take some meas- ures to Erovont any further trouble from that source, the matter was dropped. There seems to be a strange disposition to enforce strictly every rdinance when it concerns any busi- ness enterprise or building project, but when it concerns loafers, confi- dence men, crooks, gambling hoases, otc,, there s an equal laxity, If there s to be any letting down of the rigid law, and any overlooking of technloal offenses, it should be in favor of those who are ‘mlldlng up the olty, rather than those who live as leeches on the community, The presence of a bawdy house In close proximity to a hotel caused some of the employes of the Ilatter estab- lishment to be quite incensed, and 1t is claimed that they bombarded the windows of the house with oyster oans and other amunition of a like nature. As a consequence charges have been orn:“q nat Wfl‘ll;:m Weller, three g room ate tendants, ‘‘Frank, Amells and Jen- nle,” as they are booked, and the quartet ho:l"t.o m;:lh:h Bn:’urdny. Mayor Bowman has not made any tarther publie announcements of changes in the police force, but it ls pretty generally understood now that those officers whose bonds were not presented at the last counoll meeting will quletly drop out, one by one, It is also probable that there will be no clty pollceman hereafter regalarly sta- tloned at the transfer, but that one will be sent down there at such times of the day when there {s the biggest rush, The Union Paclfic has its own pald policemen, and the clty does not farnish polloemen for the other de- pots. chief reason for keeping a policeman at the transfer was to look out for confidence men, but the con- ductors and traln men have the ssme suthority undor the state law as police oficers, and they are fully as well posted as tc who the crooks are, yet no one ever hears of a rail way employe arresting them, In fact, they throw the whole brunt on the city's policeman, and {f & trick s tarned the public at once pounces upon him for negligence, never thinking of the negligence of rallway employes or the depot police~ men, It is claimed, too, that the rallway officlals begin to act as though they had the say, or ought to have the say, asto whom the olty shall place there, The experiment having been treld, 1t is now proposed, for these and other reasons, to try it the other way for a while, and se¢ which works the most satisfactory. It Is Intended, too, to kecp apoliceman at the sta- tion nights, Heretofore they have all been out on their beats, and if an officer was wanted, or there was any business to be transasted at police headquarters, it necessitated the hanting up of some man on his beat, or else exciting a general commotion by ralsing a hue and cry sofficlent to reach the ears and attract the atten- tlon of the pollcemen, This will prove a public convenlence. Those who have gone prior to this week have been settlad principally in 8an Louls Oblspo, Monterey, Shasta and Humboldt oountles, A letter from San Louls Obispo, recelved at this office April 20th and dated April 10th says: ‘‘At present the town is full of strangers who are looking for lands to purchase, but owicg to the late ralns land in the county has rapidly appreclated in price, and those who expect to pur- chase at the prices furnished by the Immigration assoclation had better remain away, as the land is now held at about twice as much as stated by the association. There were between two and three bundred ladies and gentlemen who gathered at Dohany’s hall yesterday afternoon to listen to thelecture given by Judge Palge for the benefit of the the Home of the Friendless, the en tire proceeds golng for that purpose, even the leotarer, instead of Envfig a share, asis often the case, paylng his admittance fee like any of the others. One liberal gentleman dropped §5 in the box, and others were s0 generous as not to confine their giving to the mere price of admittance, The leoturer treated of the sclentific as- peota of splrituallsm, a subject which, naturally proved interesting just now, there having been so much local dis- cusslon growing out of Dr. Slade's presence here, Mr, Paige olaimed that about nine-tenths of the so-called manifestations were nothlng but jug- gling and alight of hand, but of the remalning tenth there were man; things which ecience had not thus far been able to explain, He thought that those who were honest (n theic bellef and In thelr part in manifestations were decelved by diseased brains, or by nervous complications, He handled the other real phenomenon very cor- dually, and presented a great many solentific facts aud thoughts, His lec- ture was throughout an entertaluin, snd instructive one.
