LEE DAILY BEE-~COUNULL BLUFFS .OWA MONPMAY APRIL 9 GOBBLING THE GROUND. READY FOR BUSINESS. Land for the Landieee. Uacle Sam Is rich enough to give us all & farm. At least, that is what Colonel Whaley thought when hg made something less than s handred men of Councll Bluffa into home- steaders, Among the number were the Hon, Blymav, the brilllant attor- ney; Mr, DeRiven, the merchant, and, in short, a oconslderable per ocentage of the solld men of the city. These men paid Ucele Sam for home- steading thelr respective clalms, and thelr attorney sent on the entire list of papers in one batoh. This unanimous method of home- steading was a little unasual, and the proceedings caused inquiry. Mean. while the Uuited States land office records showed a wonderful immigra- tion from Councll Bluffs, and yet, strange to relate, our homes and fire- aldes were not desolate, The merry laugh of the Dakota homesteader conld be distinotly heardin the strects of Council Bluffs. The place that knew the men of land still recognized thefr presence. Finally an agent was dispatched to look after matters, and now comes the denouement. The all been jumped, and he notwithstanding the pay- ment of many hundreds of dollars and the careful and expensive work of making it all solld with the recelver Cnassady & Orcutt's New Store. The opening of Osssady & Oroutt's new carpet store is an event that has been looked forward to by our house- keepers who require goods In that line, This season is the appropriate one for an opening in this line of goods; for the spring house cleaning always reveals a necessity|for replaciag the worn and faded rugs, mats, hang- ings and ocarpets. Here everything needed in that line oan be secured from a fresh stook, that has nothing but new and styllsh patterns, dis- played in great profusion, wo that we think no reasonable citizen now needs to send abroad for even the finest and mont. ¢ stly trappings with which to decorate his halls and parlors, The principal entrance is on Broadway, the plate glass windows furnishing an excellent opportunity for light and stroet display. There {s also an entrance, and a miniature store on Main street, which is connected by an archway with the large retall department. Tae up stairs rooms we find connected with an elevator that has the safety attach- meont, which precludes all possibilities of acccldents, The second floor will be the packing room, and devoted principally to the wholesale business of the firm. The basement Is as large as the buollding, and will add frutly to the storage facllities that will be required. The line of goods in stock includes, betides the standard varleties of car- pets, oll cloths and linoleums, the very largest sssortment of lace cur- talns, lambrequins, shadefclothr, raw silks, jates, and a fall line of table linens and napkins. Bed spreads, tidles, table scarfs, table nndp plano covers are alsc kept in stook, There in also a large varlety of miuor articles too numerous to partioularize. overnment land. The condition of the afflloted leg was terrible, About six inehes below the knee the bone pro- traded at an obtuse angle, and an ulcer of formidable dimensions was u'finl away the perlosteum or cover- ing of the bove. ' Dr, F, P. Bsllinger, ted by Dr. Deetkin, operated it. They muade an tncision abont Bt inches in length, and parallel k the bone. They cat away about fout inches of the diseased tibia, then breaking both bones about four inches aboye the ankle, theystralghtened the log and placed 1¢ in a normal position, This left space between the ends of the bones of about two and a half inches, there being no bone whatever for that distance, Now this vacuum must be filled with live healthy bone in order to make the leg available, and tho learn- ed operators making a V shaped in- cision in the bone abuve, obtalned the necessary material for filling the chasm, and nature with her wonder- ful building powers, assisted by a liberal bone producing dlet for the patient, will in a short time make the lately diseased limb, almost if no* quite as strong as its mate.
