Wonderful Perfeotion Reacked in Making Artificial Limbs. What They are Made of and How Operated Writing With indian Rubber Hends snd Skating on Wooden Legs Fewer pareons are seenon the stroets In New York with umpty sleeves and using crutches than ia any Karopean city wi h an cqual popalation. The improvement now made In the manu- facture of artificial limbs is moat marked, and the articles that are sup plied to-day are so perfect, both in thelr construction and action, as to al most defy detection, and many men, women and children now go about the scroets with artificial legs and arms whom nobody would ever suspect of being maimed. Tho records of the Americin Patent Offise show 150 patents, or more thau double of all Earopean patents for similar inventions. The civil war, in which 80 many soldlers and sailors were mutilated, no doubt len: great impetas to inventors and makers. The annual number cf artificlal limbs now manufagtnred in America is estimated ot 120,000, The surgical operations in the form of amputation are com- puted at 100,000. HOW THEY AKE MADE. To supply the loss of any one limb, or of all limbs, the manufacture of artificlal members has been brought to such perfection that they can be used by thelr wearers with almost as much facllity as the natural limbs, Artificlal limbs are now almost universslly made of willow wood, a affording “greater strength, llghtness and nlf!lty than could be obtained with other materlals, The materials formerly used were as varled as their mode of construction. Some were of tin, solid wood, and even of iron, while the different j,ints were worked with all sorts of complicated machin ery In the shape of cogged whoele, steel springs, eto.,, which wero not only cumbersome aud nolsy in their operation, but were constantly gotticg out of order. The articles of to-dsy obviato all this, Over the willow foundation is stretched a coverlng of leather which is enameled to represent the natural flesh, while the juints are articulated by means of light eprings of steel, rubber and cord, according to the FALSE LEGS, Mr. A, A. Marks, of No. 169 Broad- way, Is one of the largest manufac- turers in this country, He now ha who are fitted each with two false legs Both cau run and walk almost as well as those possel their nataral limbe, The maker attributes his suc cess to the use of rubber for the feet of his legs and ignores what he terms as having been 8o long the bagbear of all makers, the artificial ankle joint. Certainly his legs are entirely noise- lees, while the action of the knoe joint in s perfect as possible, FALSE ARMS, Hisarms ave so constructed that they oan be fitted to a "stump at the three iuches, and yot made to aot almost as well as the natural limb. These arms are so constructed as to enable the wearer to take off his hat or put it on, reise a cigar, or to take ho'd of and lift arything of moderate weight, This end is obtalned by means of cords and spiiogs, the former passirg across the shoulders and being fastened under the oppesite arm- pit. By means of a slight downward pressure of the stump into the sock:t of the limb the eprings are set in action and the desired mo- tlon in given, The hands are made of soft rabber, with annealed wire run ning through the fingers, which allows them to be put into any desired pos! tion, Others are made like the foet— of solld rubber sponge, which affords a gocd grasp if anything is placed ba tween the thumb and fingers. Pa tients thus supplied can even write with their hande, 1o proof of which he exhibiis mavy specimens of their call- graphy. Iu the palm of the hand is fitted a sorew socket into which can be ficted & kuife and fork for the purposes of eating at table. The most usefal snd strongest appliance, however, isa hook which screws on to the wrist In place of a hand, for with its immenee weights can be lifted, parcels carried and many other things done w‘hloh the hand would not be capable of, MARVELLOUS EXCELLENCE, In addition to the usual arlifictal limbs & large practice is had in ex- tending a shortened or deformed leg to agree with lts fellow and so well 18 this done that detection is impossible wheu the wearer is dreesed. Alegor an arm will last usually from five to fifteen years, Mr Marks' employe, to whom reference has al roady been made, states that he for years was acoustomed to skate and that too after he tock to wearing his two artificlal legs. The only difficulty that he feels at all in thelr use s when Keing up stairs, The price of artificial legs is from $65 to 8125, while arms are somewhat 1 For hauds and feet the price is regulated by the trouble required to make a fit, Mr. Marks contends that hisy method of usig rabber feet to work on a etiff ankle jeluts 1s the best of all, as the rubbor gives all the elastloity and spring required. Mr Fr however, another maker cured several patents for his inventions, holds that his mode of using & universal arkle joint with a comporition foot and the epring joint is the beatof all inventions yet brought out, and 1t is undoubted'y most per. fect in ajpearauce and action when in actual use, . He says these jiints have greater bearlug surface; they are much stronger and more reliable, and are more life like in every particular, HOW THEY (PERATE, The mode in which the artificial legs operate when worn 1s as followe: When the leg ts moved forward to make & step, the heel first comes in contact with the ground; when the ankle moves, the foot draws down on a spring which sots instantly on the knee joint, holding it firm to recel: the welght of the Wearer; aud in s P ping from the artificial leg, as soon as the kneo la flexed the cord s relaxed, which allows tho other cord to raise the foot from the ground, carry the lower log forward, and msake the next step almost without an effort, Both makera state that the majority of their ollents ave those that have been In railroad accidents, Mr, Marks has now under conslderation the fitting of a child about two years of age with a complete set of limba who was born with veither arma nor lege, their place belng only repre sented with short stumps of from two to six ioches long. He thinks he will be able to so fit the uufortunate child a8 to enable him to move about when ho geows older. OOUIDENTAL JOITINGS, .QNV’INI.
