Harmen & Kealm, Prop; WAYS OF THE wchEn_ March 9, reported for Tux Ihxr A Couple of Bold Burgiaries and Some Petit Offenses Polica Oourt Record of the Doy. A Probable Bult for Domages Under tho Slocumb Law. After a bricf poriod of quiet follow- ing the numerous burglaries which preceded the arreet of Wlillam Kre gor, another raid was made Fridey morning, the restdonce of Hon, L M. Beonett, euperintondent of the P. P, C. Co,, beivg matkid out ae the scene of operations, The burglar in this caso obtained an entrance to the house, which is on Davenport and Twentioth stroets, by cutting the blind of the kitchen win- dow and then opening the window with a common table kuife, He went up stairs and no doubt tried to get {nto the sleeping appartment ocoupled by Mr. Bennetr, but it waslocked and he mnext wont to the room of ocoupied by the servant girl, who was awakened by the notse and sat ;up in bed to lieten. He demanded her money, ana when she screamed, caught hor by tho throat end choked her until ghe promised to be qalet if he wonld loave the premises. He started to go, and whon he got us far a8 tho hall she screamed agaln, upon which he ran dowu tho back staics, kicking over the lamp he had lighted and scattering the oil and broken lass over the stops. Mrs. Bennett had been awskened by the servant glrl's screams, ond she saw the light through the trausom and roused her hushand, but as the hired girlhad disturbed them once before, when she had the night.mare, he thought it was the old story and was fo nwo harry to turn oumt. On the second alarm, however, he ran out, and, learning the facts in the oase, ran down stairs and out on the porch, calling for the polise. Officer O'Boyle, of the police foroe, who was on the Sixteenth street beat, heard the alarm, and in company with the blocck watohman ran toward Mr. Bennett's. Near the Congrega- tional church they caught sight of a stranger standing on the corner, who was no doubt the burglar, and when they attempted to overhaul him he ran, Officer O'Boyle fired two or three shota after him, but the fellow had started before they got within good range and made good his esoapa. COLR'S BURGLARY. Another bold raid was made Friday night on tne residence of Mr. Cole, bookkeoper for Max Meyer & Bro., who resides in Besmer's block, near the B, & M. freight depot. An en- tranco wes effected by turning the kay In the front door, probably by a pair of nippers. Therobber was not heard, although Mrs Cole awoke once in the night and heard a siight noise as if rats were at work gome- where, which might have been the tarning of the key. When Mr. Cole got up Saturday morning he found his gold watch and chaln, the studs which he had left in hls shirt and $26 or §30 which he had left in his pocketbook mlselog, and found the door open, revealing the faot that he had been successiully burglarized. Evidently i§ is high time that a olty detective or some one was looknig up these matters, as the raids are be- coming more and more fraquent, and are liable to result more disastrously than in mere loss of money and jewelry. A CROOKED MAIL CARRIHR, The mail carrier who hed charge of the route between Barada and Falls Oity was arrested fir robbing the mail of registered letters, the ocase having been worked up by Inspector Faoray and nalled down so close that Hood coufessed to_his crime. While being taken to Liocoln Friday to be tarned over to “the United States authorities, Hood jumped from the train when near Syracuse and made good his escape. © was at the time i charge of Deputy U, 8. Marshal Culp and Capt, Foray is hot at the hat he should be allowed to get away. Hood's home was at Falls Olt where he leaves a wife and two chil- dren in destitute circumstances, BROKE HIS LEG, A man named Schroder, a carpsn- ter, entered the saloon of Michael Wallenz Friday and it is oclaimed was intoxicated and ralsed a disturb- ance. As he refused to go when or- dered out, Wallenz and his bartender, George Mader, tried to fire him out. The floor had been scrubbad durlng the evening and wan still alippery and in the meles Schroder was thrown down and botk bones of the right leg broken below the knee. Dr, Carter dressed the wound and Mader was ar- rested and held to answer the ocharge of assault. Under the Slocumb law Wallenz is probably llable for damage, which he or his bondsmen must pay. If Schroder should bring sult under this provision of the law it will be the first cage of the kind in Omaha. POLICE COURT. Harvey Holmes, a colored boy, slsldad guilty in the police court Fri- ay to the charge of stealing some cloth belonging to 8, P, Morse & Co,, and he was sentenced to twenty-five days in jall on bread and water. ennis Eagan pleaded guilty to stealing a pocket-book containing $4 20 belonging to J. Sixteenth street is an important avenue of commerce and {s lined with bosiness houses of every deacription and all are doing o brisk and thriving trade. It 18 now proposed to destroy their afterwards, at oonvenlent intervals and within easy reach from the win- dows, forming a complate and secure Inder from the ground to the top story; no matter how high that may be. Being set to the alde of the win- dows {t not only affords an opportunity for escape, but if the fire is in a lower story avoids all sheets of flime or volume of smoke that may be pouring out, and, being a part of the walls themselves will stand until the walls fallin, The boxee are painted the same color as the brick aud cannot bs deteoted until they are neoded, whon they open like magle at the touch of the foot. This not only affords ezcape for the inmates, but gives the fircmen access to any and every part of the building, independent of ladders, which often cannot be ralsed where there is a net work of telegraph wiree above. Ou this account it will be warmly en- dorsed by ineurauce compaules gen- orally. Mr. Thompson has recoived a lotter from the parties through whom ke applies for » patent, to tha effact that his is the best fire escapa ever in- vonted, out of over 480 devices for the same purposes, the only one ocoming anywhere near to it being that fnvented by Copt, the architect of the Oapitol bmldln;; which is deficient in many ways. In con- pection with the escape Mr. Thomp- son also has a plan for an automatio opening of all the boxes on the dis- covery of fire in a building., For in- stanoe if it breaks out in a hotel the olerk has only to pull the handle which connects with a wire running the entire helght of the building and at onoe the ladder is open and ready for use, while a great gong rings the alarm and awakens those in danger. All in all the invention is a most clever one and is destined unduubted- bueiness and cut off both their coun- try and down town trade by running a dangerous rallway track across the highway over which thelr patrons have been accustomed to travel and trade in safety. Not only will our business interests be impaired if not totally ‘destroyed, but our residence and busineas property will depreclate 10 value and entall upon us a loss in money that would be more than suffi- clent to buy several manufacturing concerns such as tho Woodman Lin- seed Oil Co.'s works.
