A Oongressman Tells Some Secrets About the Game in Washington. A Washington correspondent writes as follows: ‘‘Senator Tom Bowen, of Qolorado, is the best poker player we have in town, Why, the second night he was here, Plumb, of Kansas, and Jones' of Nevada, sat dow th him to a little game. and 1 am told he scooped the party t> the extent of twenty or thirty thousand in half an hour, but Bowen has loet more than he has won during the last fow years, ‘'WHO ARE THE POKER PLAYERS IN CON- GRESSY" a member was msked, ‘‘There are very few who have seats in the senate, Old Lapham plays occasionally, and ‘|80 do Hale and Vest: butas to the others-—it would disgrace the game to say they played at all. These are not the times we used to have when Grant was president,” *“Is Arthur much of o playert’ ““Well, yes. Iguess he is about as ‘cagey’ as any of them. He will it up all night over & game of poker, when nothiug else in the world will hold his attention.” CHANDLER IS A BEARP ONE, too, and I understand that he and Congressman ‘Dick’ Crewley are about the most expert iu that set.” ““What set?" ; ‘‘Why, the white house set, They tell me tha: they play it ‘olind,’ in deference to Arthur's wishes, and this has been the most popular way of running the game here this season, In the ‘draw’ game there {s a little chance for skill, but ‘bkind’ poker, in which you don’t draw at all, 1s the most outrageous form of gambling }mt, ot course, you know all about % *‘Who are the best poker players in the house,” “‘Joe Blackburn can deal the paste- boards with as much grace and celerity as-any man I know of, and will back his hand to almost any limit. Young Walker, of Pennsylvanis, is commonly known as a dalsy cutter, and Springer, of Illinols, swears by the jaok of clubs The western men are by far the best ocard players. I think Tom ¥oung, of Olncinnati, and ex-governor of Ohlo, is about as smart a onelas ever sat down to a poker game in Washington and the man who can bluff him out of a hand has to get up pretty early in the morning., But the poker playing here just now is nothlog to what it was ot Albany when Boss Twead ruled the deck.” Lrue to her Trust Too wuch cannot be samd of the 1l wife and mc conat. walc nd caring for her dear ones, never neglecting a single duty in their be- half. Maurphy, the fishing-rod maker of Newark, *It Dolph Jakes was alive he could eat a bevy every day. He was the fear- fullest gormandizer I ever saw. Did I ever tell youhow he beat me out of $2 657" ‘‘No, Marphy; how was it?" eaid the listener. ““Why, I was settin’ In the Astor lunch one night and in came Dolph. He walked up to the bar and teok a drink, There was & big dish of hard boiled eggs at one end of the bar, and he began going for the hen frult, He plcked up an egg, cracked it on the bar, picked the shell off, and ate it. But he didn’t stop, he ate another and another until he had swallowed five, I was watching him, and 1t made me real mad to seo him so greedy. So Isaid: ‘Dolph, you had better eat’em all, hadn't you?”’ ‘8o I will, Charles, if you'll pay for 'em,’ sald he. **‘Go right along,’ I said; ‘I'll pay if you finish the dish.’ ’ ‘“He never stopped untll he had eaten twenty-five more, He then took a drink, ate an oyster stew, a plate of crackers, and finlshod the dish of eggs. Thero were twenty-three more. Fifty-three eggs was what he ate, and they had the cheek to charge me five cents apiece for 'em—just £2.26 I was out, I never spoke to Dolph again. Ihwouldn't associate with him after that.” Horsford’s Acid Phosphate For WoMeN AND UHILDREN, DR. DEAD OR ALIVE? A Colored Man's Body Keeps Warm for Five Days After Death, Philadelphia Press, Feb, 27th. The bocy of Anthony Lewis, a col- ored man, has been lying for six days at his residence, 26 South Forty-sec- ond street, in a state of apparent sus- pended anlmation, A week ago to-day he attended an entertainment at Mount Pisgah A, M. E. Church, Locust, above For leth street, ana in the midst of it dropped dead. He was taken to his residence, where he lived with his sister, and the coroner was summoned. He gave the usual ver- dict of heart disease and departed, giv- iog orders for the burial of the body. | On Wodnesday an_ vaderteker was | called, br ho refased to have anything to do with the case, saying that tho man was not dead, This strange an- nouncement reminded the sister of & strange speech that Lewls had made to her » week before, *‘In a little while,” sald he; I shall dle, and yet I shall not be dead, I shall come to life again, but shall not live long, In a fow days after I shall really dio.” The man really had but the appear- ance of # man In a peaceful sleep, The oolor of his lips remained natural, and In addition to this, the animal heat remained in the body, This was conclusive evidence that the man had not departed this life, 3 Friends of the supposed dead man kept constant watch and trled all man- ner of tricks that are commonly sup- osed to declde whether the spark of ife is extinot or not. A mirror was held before the lips of the ‘‘suspect,” and some of the credulous and ex- cited nefroeu insisted that molsture really did gather on the glass. Pins were driven into the man’s flesh, but he moved not. Some of the neigh- bors suggested that they get some of the dootors at the univeralty to come and apply an electric battery; but the sister became highly exolted at the idea. “I don't wont any ob dem student fellers to practice on my brud- der,” sald she. ‘‘He said he would come to life, 'n if he will, den der ain't no need of 'lectricity.” 80 she remained firm and allowed no physiolans near her saored dead, Saturday was finally declded on for the interment, but whon the day arrived the body was still warm and as natural as life, No odor whatever could be detected. Several officers of the Twenty-first district viewed the alleged corpee, and found it still warm, The poor rister was nearly worn out by the constant watching, as she had hardly left the side of the body in all that time. When yesterday came tho body seemed to ba quite cold at last, and it was decided to remove 1t to the house of the man's wife in Salem, N, J. Beeldes, the other peoplo llviug in the honse began to object to the corpse belug left 8o long in the bulld- og. Féa acofin was procured and the body was placed therein, A dinner- bell was placed in the inanimate hand 80 that In case he camo to life he might attract attentton te his unfortunate conditlon, The coffin lid was partly fastened, the body was loaded ona wagon and taken to the Market Street Ferry, where they were to go by the ‘West Jersey railroad to the home of the wife. One of the bystanders re. marked that she guessed that if any- thing would wake him up the jolting of that wagon would, It was the in. ention of the friends who accompa- nled the corpse to Salem to give it a burial unless 1t showed signs of life, Free rge. How many cakee will you have?” “Not one, Iam looking for some cakes of old maple sugar—some at least a year old, I think new sugar unhealthy,” “I'll vell you what, sir,” eald the keeper of the stand, as he gave his wvoloe a confidentlal pitch, *‘if you want #ix cakes at five cents each, I'll admit Ilied sbout it, and that this is old | mone sugar polished up with a rag. The Toledo Blade belleves that wo- men could manage a hotel elevator better than most of the men or boys usually employed. It may appear un- gallant to dispute this, but if a woman should be in charge of an elevator and 2z 8 lady should enter with a new style of hat a male passenger would run the risk of being hoisted several stories higher than his intended landing place before he could attract the attention of the operator. *'Conquerer of all Life's Woes."
