By reason of ita pecu- llar one-sided development the gyac. catus is, however, adapted for living on mouatains and hills, It can wal with easo on the side of a steep slope, where even a goat would have a pro- carious foothold, Theanimal’s strange stracture, untortuastely, is In one re- epect a great disadvantage. While it can travel sround a hill from right to left with the utmoat eaee, it cannot re- trace its steps, 8o long as its left side is towards the hill the oreature stands a8 firmly as a tree, but if it is obliged to turn the other way its footing is lost immediately and it rolls helplessly to the bottom of the slope. Hunters of the gyascutus, whose fur was held in high esteem, ueed to avail themselves of this fact to captuve the animal, It was useleas to purauea gyascutus on ifs chosen path, as the animal’s locomotive arrangementsgave it exceptional speed. The huntors, therefore, adopted the artfice of trav- eling around the hill In a direction contrary to that pursued by the ani- mal and, meeting it face to face, had no difficulty in seouring it. An 01d Church in Arizona. Tuscon Correspondence of The Denver Trioune, The most intcrenting of all sights is the grand old misefon church of San Xavier, nine miles from Tascon, on the Papago reservation, This mirsion was founded in 16564, when tho Da- pago (or Pima) Indtans were supposed to have accopted the Christian re- liglon, The church of San Xavier wa3s begun about the year 1700 and finished In 1798, excepting one of the towers, whioh is yet unfinished. The style of architecture is Moorish. The lines are wonderfally perfect. It is in the form of a cross, 70 by 115 feet, and has a well-formed dome. A balustrade surmounts all the walls The front Is covered with soroll-work, intricate, interesting and partly de- osyed. Over the front is a life-size | P bust of S8t. Xavier, Tho interlor is literally covered with frescoes, altar is adorned with gilded scroll work, The statues are as numerous as the palntin, The tilling on the floor Is much defaced and but little left. That of the roof is nearly all ss perfect as when lald. Its manufacture isone of the lost arts, There is a chime of four good-sized bells in the tower that shave a soft, sweet souad. Ascending to the roof, you walk up long, narrow stairs in solid walls. Bat one can go at a time, The same is true In iolnv to the gallery of the church, It is marvelou: t 80 lon, ago, and in wuch a place, such archi. tecture, ornaments, painting and sculpture were so well executed. You are admitted by two of the Papago signors, who have have it in charge.
