H. Nicholas came to the surface again yesterday as complaining witness in the State ve, M, i, Weatherbee, It was before Justice Schurz, After the evidence was all in Justice 8. thought it not suffi- cient to hold Weatherhee on, and the brief bitterness ended. —A complaint was entered before Judge Ayleswoith against H. Pethyridge for slaughtering sheep, calves, etc., on Piercs street back of his market. The case was dismissed on payment of costs, and the promise to desist in future, ~—1In the circuit court yesterday tho re. plevin cave of Osler va. Smith waa tried and decided in favor of the plaintiff. Tho cace of M, G, Griffin & Co, va Schurz & Strohehm was taken up for trial, At the adjournment of court yesterday afternoon the jury in the case of Williams vs. the Powers estate were still locked up trying to reach a verdict, —Robert Jones, accused of horse steal- ing, was taken to Minden yesterday, to have another preliminary hearing, in ac- cordance with the judgment of Judge Aylesworth when the cace was brought be- fore him on » writ of habeas corpus. At. torneys Wright and Daily went also, the former to prosecute and the latter to de- fend, The examination resuited yesterdsy in ths discharge of Jones, no prosecuting witnoss appenring, ~—In the latest idiom it behooves the city authoritios of Council Bluffs to be. hoove themselves with reference to the The volume as it appears in fact does not seem o meet the expectations of some of the subscribers either in quantity or quality. Perhaps they expected too much, The book in fact is of royal octavo slze, containing G41 pages, of which 364 are given to the history of this city and county and 277 pages to biograptical sketchos, The book seems to be well bound, the paper good, and the typographical appearauce quite favor able. Even at a glance one finds some typographical errors which oaght not to be found in a work supposed to be #0 carefually prepared, the words, ‘‘at- torner” instead of ‘‘attorney “stanch,” ‘‘aiso” for ‘‘alsn,” ‘‘exun sively,” “‘sings” for ‘“‘signa,” ete. In many places matters of an entirely different nature are run together in the same paragraph, giving a gentle start to the innocent reader, who without the slightest warning finds an account of Dr. Jeffels’ lottery scheme running into a statement of the pub- lic schools, and the statement of the action taken for the relief of sufferers by the Chicago fire closing with an obituary notice of a worthy citizen. There surely cannot be the excuse of hasty preparation in a work of this kind. The iliustrations {n this work are quite good, but they are not very nu- merous. There arp portraits of N. J, Bond, P. T. Breseo, A, S. Bryant, J. P. Cassady, E 1 Ciayton, B. B, Clay ton, G. M, Dodge, J. A. Jackson, John Keller, Joseph Kuotts, Dr, Ma crao, and Goeorge F. Wright, while thera is bat ons city building and one country dwelling given a place. Oaly twelve men in the whols coanty, and two bulldings worthy of being shown ap! Alas for Pottawattamie county! The history of this city has been written by Colonel J, H Keatley, and the chapter penned by him seem worthy of mach praise, the material having been well selected and well handled, The colonel is a grace- ful writer, and he has glven the work a number of very Interesting chapters An already stated, a large portion of the book fs devoted to ‘‘biographigal sketches”—go0 called.
