A Man 48 Years Ola Who Has Never Had Halr or Teeth. Pailadelphis Prets. A remarkable man, now living in Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, was recently extiblied before the Phila. delphia medloel society. Peter Wend- ling was born forty eight years ago at Mount Nebo, a little village in Laban- on county, nestling at the foot of one of the Blue mountains, about eighteen miles from Lebanon. Although near- ly half a century old he has never had uny teeth—not even the deciduous teoth of iufancy, Neither has he ever iad any distinct growth of hair on the soalp. He is entirely destitate of the sense of smell, and almost of that of taste. In regard 0 the latter he is bareiy able to distinguish the dif- ference hoiween the several kinds of food. Io the words ¢f a prominent physician, ‘‘he ls just about able to tell the difference of taste between cheese und chalk.” But the most wonderful thing about the man, which has set the pet theorios of the phy- eiciars of both hemispheres at naught, is that his skin is eatirely devold of pores. Undor the closest scratiny of the microscope it has been fmpoesibls to discover perapiratory glands, with- out which the docsors have always con- tended & man cannot live, The fine downy hair which is commonly on the limba of an ordinary perscn s entirely absent in this case, and the skin is perfectly dry and without the elight- est suspiclon of moisture, When working actively, hls body becoaes inteneely hot, aud the only meaus ot assuaging this heat is to throw water over him. What is most pecuiiar te, Mr, Wendling hes never known o day's sickness, and is in every sense a healthy man. UNABLE TO MASTICATE FOOD He is, of conrse, on account of the entire absence of teeth, uuable to masticate food. He cannot even cranch it with his jaws, as the lower e protrades so that the gama do not | meet, Besldes vegotable sud soft fuud he ean only eat the tenderest cf sat, which, after cutting it ap very ve, be makes an attempt to chew by essing it with histongue agaiust the rocf of his moath, to exiract the julce, und then swallows It. He s among the youngest of twenty-one children, none of whom posseseed any of the, pucllll.fl’lllt‘l of thelr brother, The parents were also perfect, but his | maternal uncle and grlndmuthur, icis sald, were both as slogularly created As Mr Wendling. His father was a farmer, and the son followed this occupation for many years. When working 1t the fields it was alwsys necessary to have a conple of boys bring water to hhn, | 88 he could not tind relief from the ia- tonse heat his body was subjected to by perspiration, as ordinary poople do. The hoys threw the water on him, and his clothes were continually kept wet, Uanever suffered uny inconvo- pispce feom this, and never knew what It was to have a cold, I fivally became ruther cxpensive to employ boys to oarry water to the field for hisn, and he concluded to chauge hia voeaulon. He then scught employ- went o the ere m!ncs of Cornwall, Lebanon county. ere e was beset by snoiher difficulty, His skin belng dry and slippery from want of nataral punplntlon, he was unable to get a firm grip on the pickax jand the other tools used. This he remedied by wearing gloves, with which he was able to wield his instruments some- what better. He soon grew tired of this kind of work, however, and about a year ago, having learned the trade of making shoes, he opened a little shoe shop in Bismarck, a small village about seven miles south of Lebanon. The small tools used in cobbling he can easily manage. While at work in his little shop he has a bucket of water stand- ing beside him with which he keeps his clothing constantly wet. Durlog the summer when it is so warm that he can not sleep, he does not go into the cellar, and liea on the damp ground until he becomes sufficiently cool, when he again retires to his couch and is able to slumber., He frequently takes this means of cool- ing off. One of his greatest delights is to give himself a thorough soaking under the pamp. His sedentary oc- cupation has caused him to have a alight attack of dyspopsia within the last fow monthe, as he was always nsed to outdoor lsbor. Mr. Woud- ling has & wifc and eight children, His progeny have none of the defects of the father, with the exception that their teeth are imperfect. One of his daughtnn, who is about sixteen years old, has only ten teoth lnstoad of the Lwenty olght she should possess, and none of them have & full set. Intellec- taally, Mr. Wendliug is perfect. A MEDICAL EXAMINATION, Professor 8, H. Guilford, of the Philadelphie deutal college, has basen acquainted with Mr. Wendling some ten or twelve years. He has spoken toa numbor of old residents «f Loba. non county who have known the strange man since his infancy, and who corroborate all the facts of his pecultar history as related above, Professor Guilford has for several years beon avxlous to gt Mr. Weond- ling to come to this city to be pre- sented to the etndente of the dental collego, As Mr. Wendling is of & ro- tiring dlspoeition the professor was unablo to accomplish his ubject until this winter. It would have been {im- possible to briug him here in the sam- mer, as his clothes have to be kept continually wet during the hot months, and he would, therefore, attract too moch attention. Mr, Wendling finslly consented to come here and appesr at the last maseting of the Dental college. This was done, aud the professor, wishing to also ex- hibit him befors the Philadelphia modlcal society, msde arrangegionts with Dz, Wm. Atkinson, who is a tros. tee of the soclety, to that effect. At the last meeting of the society Dr, Atkingon presented the queer patient. The physicians made close examina- tion, and were astoanded. They all pronounced the caso as bolng of the strangest character, and one unknown in medical aunals, Mr, Wendling re- | turned home a fow days ago. While | he wus in this vity hls photograph was taken and will be published in the medical pape: The weil known Juunnlht Oaptain Henry Baker, cor, Chestnut st, and Peters ave., Now Orleans, tried St, Jacobs Oll, "and was cnred of @ trou- blesome case of rheumatism, | Ravide, Royal and Ministerial Salaries. London Truth, In 1871 Sir Oharles Dilke stated that the cost of royalty was excossive, and he estimated it at £1,000,000 per aunum. He was not tar wrong, as was oonclusively proved when an addition- askoed for Prince Liaopold on of his marrlage. it by no means follows nocessarily that Sir Charles wishes to disestablish roy- alty because he is in favor of partially dlsendowing it. In a country whera the prims minister recalves £5,000 per annum and an agricaltural laborer about 181, por weoek, 1t is conceivable the sovereign might ba respected with a yearly in- come of £50,000 per snnum, and that each of her children might maintain themselves in porfect comfort on £4,000 per annum, In the days of Charles II, the post of prima minister was worth about £100,(00 per an- num. I do not lmaglne the respect for the incumbent of thle post hus di- mintshed bacause the walary atiached to it is only one-twentieth of that sum, —_——— Money for the Unmarried.
