A petition signed by a goodly nom- ber of citlzens asking for the repeal of the ordinance restraining cows from running at large was referred to the police committee. The city marshal was instructed to put the pound in proper condition under thn direction of the police committeo. N. J. Bond was allowed to speak in behalf of the enforcement of the cow ordinance A petition of citizens on lower Main street was presented, asking for better protection from fires, the en- gines now being located too far dia- tant and the water supply in that lo- cality belng very limited. Referred to fira comnmittee. The audito:’s reporr,as already puh- lished in Tur Bxg, was presented and filed. On motion, $1,000 was transferred from the police fund to the sinking fund. Oaptain Williams, the city weigh- master, made complaint against the way the council had used him, prac- tically renderit g the office of no ac- count, The city attorney filed a report that in his opinfon the action of the council in extending the time for the Water Works company to complete its con- tract, was legal and binding on both parties. The city attorney was instrusted to notify the Chicago & Northwestern ilway to fulfil its agreement in re- gard tc making its pars of the levee, and that the city would hold the com- pany responsible for any damages arising frcm their failirg to do as they agreed. The treacurer's report was presented and referred to the finance commit- tee. Adjourned until Monday night. A gentleman of Parkersburg, Pa, George Huston, will build a house en- tirely of iron. The floors of the hall, vestibule, and libnrr will be lald with polished caat-iron tiles, in which dif- ferent qualities of iron will be used to produce the same variety of color as in ordinary tile floorirg All the other floors of the house will be of stout iron plates firmly bolted to the iron joists, The outside walls and inside partitions will be composed of two courses of iron plates firmly bolted together, 80 as to be alr-tight. These hollow iron walls and partitions will be used tnstead of chimneys and for conveyiog heat to different parts of the house, and for ventllation. The hot smoke and gasses from the far- naces passing through the sides «f the rooms in this way will, it is claimed, be almost sufficlent to keep the house comfortable in the coldest weather, so that the heating can be done with about one-half the fuel required in ordinary houses. All the doors and window sashes will also be iron, but will be constructed in such a light way and #0 nicely balanced upon hinges and weights as to open and shut as easily as those made of wood. In the parlor will be a mantel of polished steel handsomely ornamented. There will be a similar one in the dining room, upon which will be engraved hunting scénes. In the library will be & massive mantel, so constructod that it will look as if it were made of pig-tron fused together.
