A ROMANOE OF MEXICO. A Barkor Murdered by His Wife, A Crime that Loag Defl:d Ex- planation, The Attempt to Fasten Guilt Upon the Innocent Folled by & Detective, Don Pedro Osnosa was a wealthy banker residing near Fort Tanas, Mexio). and beloved by all who knew him. Oa the morning of Jaly 18, 1881, the police authoritles were in- former that the banker was dead —had been murdered the night before, whiie heslept. Juan Marques, ono of the shrewdest detectiyes of the day, was instructed to leave no stone unturned until the murderer had been secured Arriving at the mansion of the mar- dered merchant, the «ffiser found that the deed, to a great extent, was shrouded in mystery. The murdered man lay with a oalm expression on his face, and it was evident that he had passed quietly and quickly from the sleep of life into the long, unbroken rest of death, In his lefi breast, directly over the orgin of life, was still aticking the instrument of de- struction which bad sent his soul un- summoned to its author. The deteo- tive drew the tiny dagger from the wound, and, wrapping it in some paper, placed itiohis pocket. Scarcely an hour had passed when a carriage drove up to the door, and the widow of afew hours, who had been on a visit to some relations, entered the room and threw herself, with a plerc. ing ery, upon the body of her hus- band, Benora was dashing beautifal, and might have felt the warmth ofl twenty-three summers, Her height was medium, her eyes clear, dark and reatloss, and glossy curls foll msjes- tioally over her rounded shoulders. Her sgonising shrieks were paiufal to hear, and fearing that her reavon might be impaired, her friends carried her to her room, where she continued to rave in a distressing manner. The inquesc furnished no clue to the mys- tery, save that when the widow was aeked if she knew cf any one having any hatred agaiost her murdered hus- band, she answered spmewhat tremul- ously that she did not. The usual verdiot was given and Benora was carried to her room in an insensibie oondition, Don Pedro was buried, and the matter gradually faded from the mi.ids of the public, like others of a slmilar natare, Some days after the burial the detective called upon S8enora COanoss, who kindly received him and ushered him into a richly furnished parlor, where they conversed for some time on vhe murder. “Senora,” said the detective, ‘‘do you suspect any one in the murder of your hu: “Tdo not,” she hesitatingly an. swered, ‘‘but his base conduct to Se- norita Miguel bifore his marriage with me was such as to force her to commit anything for revenge. Before I be- oame his wife he sedaced the girl under promise of marrisge and then deserted her. Of late she has been leading a life of sin, Nhe has been heard to utter threats cf vengeance agrinat him, and he always feared she would pat them into execution?” ‘Do you know anything about this dagger?” sald the detective, drawing the instrument from his pocket. The woman paled and shuddered at the sight of the blood-stained steel. “‘I have heard of it,” she answered. ““It belongs to Senorita Miguel, as the dercription given me of one she had in her possession answers to this completely.” Thanking the widow for her infor- mation, the detective took his depart- ure, not, however, until requested to deal leniently with the girl, as she was mcre sinned against than sinning, The next day the detective rarg the bell of the house in which Seuorita Migael resided and was Immediately oshered into her room. Senorita ontered in & few moments, and com- ing at once to the nature of his errand, the datective immediately began to discunss the tragedy. At the mention of the facts the woman began to weep. Wheu she had dried her tears lhutufd her story, and in such a straightfor- ward manner as to leave no trace of suspicion whatever In the mind of her listener, ‘‘He wronged me and made me an outcast from home,” she continued. “I did at one time determine to aill him, but I changed my mind and de- he deser: “‘You said you broy, with you a dagger, sve 1t}" She rose and went to a bureau, aund sfuer searching it fora time said, in & choking voice: ‘It has dissppeared. Oh, cruel fatel” “‘Is this 111" sald the detective, drawiug forth the tiny dagger. “Yes, oh, yee!" she cried, and as she grasped it and saw the blood stained marks on it she sank back ht from home ill you let me #aid tho detective, ‘‘fear not, I'bslieved your story; and, farth- er, that the dagger was stolen from your drawer that the deed might be fastened on you, I will exiricate you and bring the real marderers to jus. tica.” For seven long months Juan Mar- qnez shadowed the murdered man's widow with an sstuteness that was highly commendable. One night he saw her leave her houre, walk scme distance, enter & cab and drive in the direction of the quay. He followed, Upon alighting she was immediately joined by a man whom the deteotive recogulze d a8 & noted gambler named Antonio aud the two walked arm-in-arm along the promevads for some time, Such words as **dayger,” “‘no euspicion,” were heard by (ho do- tective, and, though disconncoted, they added liks to the chain, Afier a lengthy talk they affectionately kissod each other and ‘parted in diffr- ent directlons, Following the man, the detective saw him enter a houre, and before he had secured the door the officer was In the hallway, Nofse: veriible. With the sheath 1n his possesslon the detective argued the chain would be finlshed, The following morning the detective called upon the widow and was graciously recelved. Suddenly turning from the topic of conversation the detective sald: “Senora, do you know one Antonlo Pablot” The woman grew athly pale, and grasping the arm of her chair, looked the detective full in the face while she answered: “‘Nol" ““Who did you meet on the quay Inat night?” “I object to this Intrusion?” said the woman, “Your objections amount to noth. ing,” said the officer. ‘Do you recognize these letters?’ sald the detective, at the same «me throwing the package upon the table, An she staggered to the table, the sheath dropped from her bosom to the floor. ““These lotters sre mine,” she sald. “‘They were nd in Antonio Pablo's room,” said the detective. ‘‘And, by the way, this dagger fits this sheath,” and stopping he seized the sheath and thrust the dagger in- to it. A wild shriek parted her lips, and she sank to the floor. “‘Oh, my God!” she orled, is this the reward of my sccursed schemea!" Her sgony was fearful, and while she shrieked for mercy an offizer en- tered the room having Pablo in ocus- tody. They were conveyed m.u, and pcn(:L.l;f their trial they L] fall confession. A Light Which 18 Brighter, Whiter and Steadler than Coal Gas. New York sun. Some «f the gas consumers of As- toria have adopted & gas mads from naphtha by & process patented by Magnus Gross. The gas {8 now sup- plied to the public by the Excelsior Gaalight company. 1t is made by ad- mitting a steady flow of naphtha into #ix rotorts kept at & heat of 1,700 ° to 18002 Farenheit. The naphtha flows in at the top of each retort, while at right engles to and bencath it a stream of superheated steam at 1,000 © t0 1,100° is admitted. This drives vaporized naphtha to the other end of the retort, whence 1t ir passed in tubes through cold water. This frees it of mofsture, and It then goes through a meter {nto the receiver, Twenty thousand feet of naphtha a8 are now, it is said, burned daily n Astoria at a cost of $1.60 per 1 000 feet to large consumers and $1.75 to those who use but one or two lighta The Excelsior company say they can | 4 afford to supply it in large quantities at 81 per 1,000 cubic feet, and they have entered into a contract to light & portion of Philadelphia at that rate, The photometer in the works indi- | 8 cated yesterday between 23 and 24 candle power, and Mr. Grous sald that he could without extra expense pro- duce 30 candle power gas. At the Astorla assembly rooms, to which the new gas has been supplied, but where they still have a coal meter, & com- parison was made of the two kinds of light. The naphths gas was brighter, whiter and steadler. A piece of white paper held over the flame showed no indica- tion of smoke. A large jet was lighted in the open air, but no smoke ‘was discernable, although a breezs was burning. The plpe conveying the napptha gas from the retort house to the recelver is entirely above the ground and at present lies upon the foe; ? 0 free is the gas from moist- are t there appears to be no con- densation or freezing, as would take place from coal oil gas under similar oondltions. It s asserted that four men can make 25,000 cubio feet of the naphtha gas in twonty four hours, while it would require sixteen men to make the same quantity of coal gas in the same time with the same num. ber of retorts of similar capactty.
