The artlcle published In Mon- day's Bee, which was taken from the San Francisco Chronicle, is pro- nounced entirely false by Dr. Gross- man, who says he is the physician re. ferred to. Tue Bek sald in comment- ing on 1t that it probably arose from the fancied grlevance of the overland passenger who told the story and who had been compelled to pay a big sum for extra baggsge at the Council Bluffs transfer. The facts aro thus stated Dr. Grossman was travellng with General Manager Clark and Mr. C H. Dowey, ¢f Umaha, and they occu- plod a private sar. In the Pullman was not known to Dr. Grossman antil ove alluded to reported co that Dr. Grossman had been called to attend the dying woman, and that he had refused, That is declared a lie made out of whole cloth. Upon seeing the story in The Chronicle Mr. Dawey, upon reaching San Gabriel, wrote to the St. Helena Star, giving the facts in the case. The Star printed the fol- lowing: THE OTHER SIDE, Wae printed lately an account of the death of Mies Storey on the overland train, together with the distressing addition that a physician on board, though twice requested to do mo, re- fused to attend her and left_her to die without medical aesistance. In the same car with this physician was Mr, Chas H, Dewey, of Omaha, wncle of Mrs. M. L. Reynolds, of this place, to whose attention the Star item hasbeen called, and he favors us with the fol- lowing in regard to it: 8aN Gasrizr, Cal., J 2. R A s anaary ] Dear Bir—A clipplng from the Star was sent me giving an account of the death on the train of Miss Sarah A, Btorey, of your town. Tho state- ment in regard to the phy- slclan being called upon, and refusing to go, is false. The car in which Miss Storey died was joined to ours. I stepped into the car at noon next day after her death, and vas told ¢f the occurrence by an acquaintance. I then wentback to our car and informed the dootor and Mr. 8, H, H. Clark of the death of Miss Storey, There was no call at our car for a physician, If there had been, the doctor would have cheer- folly and prnmxtl gone and without hope of rewar ’or he is kiné-heart- ed and one of tho best of men. The lle about the dootor was colned by a crank, who fancied the railroad charg- ed him too much for extra baggage. Lhope you will explain the above faots, aud oblige your friend, 0. H. OaxranD, Neb., January 20 —Again wo are in the beautitul Logan valley. Coming from the north, Oakland is visible for some distance, and the ‘Palace on the Hill"—where the youth of Oakland graduate with so mavy and varled honors —may be eeen for miles, and is, certalnly, quite an honor to so younyg a town as this fs, Upon good authority it is said that the average attendance is about 150 schol. ars in all of the departments, whils the average monthly wages paid the teachers is about $240. This, for a ten months term, will cost the people the sum cf §2,4C0, or an average f $16 a scholar per anum. The very heat achools of our large cities, sccord ing to statistics, averagoe from €6 {0 §9 ascholar per annum. This mast cer- tainly be & model school or the citi- zens would not submit to euch lavish oxpenditure of money. Wao further losrned that the yearly tuition for out. side students Is §12 per annum, which we consider quite liberal in Oakland, and should be highly appreciated by the aurroundi: g distriots. Oskland enjoys an excellent trade and the merchants are antlsipating and preparing for & large spring businese, Daring ouor stay in the town the strcets wore crowdod each day with teams, which gave the villig® quite a motropolitan appearance, There was quite & rensation here a taw wocks ago. T J. Fried forved Mr. Nolson's name to & note of 2,000 and dieposed of it to the Omaba Na. tional bank. As soon as Mr. Nelson became aware of this fact he swore out a warrant fr Fiiod's arrest and the officer was #) near that he saw Mr, Fricd, but by some meana known only to the rirg he s'ipped away from the officer and has not been heard of since, The Oakland Independent dare not or at least did not say a word about this affair. Oh, no, Me. Fricd, had done sume noble work for the Oakland ring and the Oakland Icdependent dare not peep for fear the corpulent ring would ¢it down on his independent lordship, SPINSTER. i i MI'SUURI MAITERS. The State of Trade and a Burfeit ot Amusement, Correspondence of Tun B, BuruiNatoN Juscrion, Mo., Jan- uary 30 --Prof. A, M. Pickett, of In- diana, hes been here deliverirg a course f phrenological and anatomical lectures to large and appreciative audiences, The profersor is a good speaker and handles his subject in a masterly way. Oar farmers are beginnirg to bring their corn to market. They were holding it for a while for fifty cents per bushel but now they are taking thirty-five for it. There are two protracted meetings in progrees in this little town. They are really rival instead of revival meet- ing. It seems that our good preach- ers have buen quarrelling about ‘which is the road to everlasting blies, or which of them shall be greatest in the kingdom of heaven. The Holman theatre company are playing here this week to rather poor houses, The company has some merit, but as a matter cf fact our citizsns are gotting tired «f theatres. Oune year azo beforo we had a hall we were very auvxious for a theatre or some- thing of the sort to go to. Now they come and stay all the week, aud some of them when the week is up cannot get out of town until they earn enough money working at painting and paper hanging. What we now want 1sa good lecture or two, ora good elecutionary reading, There is more 1n this eepecially for a class, Our mineral springs has again changed bande, in part, Mr. G, H, Logan buying the iuterest of Samuel Qorken. These spriogs have done wonders in the way of healing. Peo- ple have been carried here that were unable to walk and scarcely talk, and ina few weeks they were able to ‘“‘take up their bed and walk.” W. J. Bauldware, of this place, has Jeased the new Luona hotel at Mary- ville, Mo. W. A. Bordick, Esq., Is out in print lo a tirade against the city au- thorities, The secret 18 Mr. Burcick was defeated for mayor lrst spring, which has always been a sore spot with him. He has sought by every means known to bimeelt to bring the present administration into contempt. He now says that the city authorities have never spent $50 for public im- pm;a’x‘nenu besides their ‘‘salary rab. 4 The new board simply added the office cf city attorney, which was needed and which Mr, Burdick favor- ed, as there had to bo a revision of the ordinavces. Then they pay the mayor §160 more than formerly, but wo are now a city of the fourth claes and the mayor has ten times the work to do than the chairman of the old board of trustees when we were a town. All of Mr. Burdick's article comes with bad grace under the cir- cumstances, Our snow has gore. JasoN FaLn, e REMEMBER THIS.
