No fundas have yet been received from the library tax of 1882, The number of persons who have filed regular applications for books, accompanied by a satisfactory guar- antee for their return is 680, The number of books taken from the library are classified as follows: Philosophy 114, Theology 168, Nat- ural Sclence ard Fine Arts 242, Fio- tion 5,345, Poetry and Essays 1,123, History and Biography 836, Travels 476, making a total of 8,302, The number of visitors to the li- tlu;;ry and reading room has been 15,- One of the most p'easing features connected with the practical work of the inatitution 1s farnished in the large number of pupils from our pub- lic schools who resort to it for the purpose of consulting the books of reference with which it s supplied. It thus becomes an Important auxiliary in the work of public instruction, be- sldes fostering a salutary love for reading in the whole community. The monthly reports of the librarian show a gratifying improvement In the proportion of works drawn other than those of fletion. The demand for more valuable and useful books is do- cidedly on the increase, and both the librarians are recommending books for perasal, and the book committee, in the purchaso of new books, will steadily strive to cultivate the increas- ing tendency towardq a higher and a more instructive class of literature in the whole comimunity, The trustees suggest that it will be very fortunato indeed, if the oity cou'd furnish the library in a public building with more commodious quar- tors froo of expenso, where the danger from fire wonld bo greatly reduced, and larger facilities secured to the publio for the enjoyment of these op- portunities for intellectual lwprovo- ment which this institution presonts, The. present’ tax of one-half mill loaves to tho trustecs, after paying nocessaly expouses, about $400 per year for” the purchase of new books, and for supplying the reading room. The trustees suggest that an increase of one-fourth of one per cent would add about $700 to this fund, and ocould be used to great public advant. age for these purposes.
