HELPED OUT! He Is Acquitted by the Jury After a Stort Session by That Body. The Names of the Jjury and Their Opinions, Guy M. Lambertson, the United States attorney upon the opening of the court yesterday olosed the care of the government, He was restricted by the court to fifty minutes in which to make his argument. Daring the time allowed him he weat over the circumstances and faols in the case in a aystematic and clear manner. the statemonts made by him it would appear that Hall was guilty of a crime. He said that Holl had knowingly and wilfolly defrauded the gover: mont aut of money by falsifying the vouchers, The exocuss the defendant made that tho custodian at Washing ton had virtnally instrncted him to do busineas under subterfuges, was no excuse for him at sll. The custodian had recently been ignominously dis charged from the government aervice in Washington for just suoh practices as Hull had been puilty of. The sperch was strong and covered all the allegations contained in the indlot. ment. Judgoe Foster briefly charged the jury, after which they retired to the jury room for coneultation, THE VERDIOT. Shortly after fiye o'clock yeaterday afternoon the jary in the Hall case filed into the court room, and in an- swer to the usual inquiry made by the court, whether they had agreed upon their verdict, the foreman stepped forward and answered that they had. The olerk read the verdict which was one of acquittal, and then the jury was polled and discharged. The ver- dict oreated a profound surprise among the persons present, and it was oven apparont that the defendant himself was not prepared for what might bes termed the windfall which came to him, The jarors clamored for their cerlitizates, and when they were obtained the marshal's office was sought and anxious inquir. ies made for that functionary, and whether there was any mouey on hand with whioh to pay tho certifi- cates, The absence of the marshal croated dirgustandone orvwo jurors started to leave. ‘‘Hold on,” eaid ove, “when I get this cashed we will g0 out aud get n drivk.” A Beg re- porter interrogated John G. The big cattle men of Colorado held their annual meeting at Denver last Friday evening. After transacting much business Mr. M Crillis, the seo- ratary, otiered & resolution thanking which resulted in such » somplete sucoes | ‘16 Mansgers of the Burlington & the past few days over the rumor that the brewers are about to joinin a con- errted movement for raising the price of the popular bever 1o is & woll- known fact that the price of hops has advanced greatly of late, going within tho lnst year from 26 conts to 105 cents, and thir ¢ reumatance alone hus for vome time given good eground for the belief that an increase of price would be a prime necessity. Uponin- vestigation by a Globe-Damocrat re- porter it appeara that thera is & very oloso corporation among the brewers of St. Louis, Chicago Milwaukee and Cincinnati, and the retail dealers are in dense ignorance as to what is to be done by the manufacturers from whom they get their daily supplies. Onbeing intervinwed, Mr, Anthony, of Anthony & Kahn, frankly ad- mitted that the price of beer would uudoubtedly be raieed from January 1. The increase in the cost ot hops had made this necessary, and all the dealers in 8t. Louie, Chicago, Mil waukeo and Ciucinnati were sgreed upon thiy point. The increase would be from §8 to §9 per barrel. He raid thera would bo a meeting in 8. Louis during tho following week of leadirg brewera from the cities named above, and that an increased ecile of prices would certainly be agreed upon, Mr. Adolphus Busch, of the Anheuzer-Busch Brewing azrociation, seid he was not particularly in fayor of an incceate, but that tho majority of brewers soemed to think it avecessity. Mr. Pri! Stock, the secrotary of the 3t Louis Brewera' nssociation, was not accessible to the reporter, but it was escertained that he held to the opinion that an increase of price was unavcidable, Mr. Tony Faust, the well known caterer, said he understood;the price of beer would be raieed, but 1t wounld not affect him in the least. Ho was already paying from $9 to $10, as his beer was ‘‘extra brewed,” and his trade was euch that he would willingly agree to pay from $10 to $12. Mr. Emil Besscbl said that his brewer, Mr. Kllis Wainwrighs, had told him he knew nothing of a con- templated ralie, ‘‘The brewers, how- ever, Mr. B, “have it all their own way, and can do as they please. I will not object to the increased price. It will only affect the saloona that sell ‘big beers’ for a nickel, and those that furnish free lunches. I ueed o pay $14 for beer, and made money at it, but T used emaller glasses than I do now.” “Or,” said another engineer of & beef faucet, to whom ihe subject was broached, *‘we can chango the style of glasses. There's a manu‘acturer here now from Pitteburg, in anticipation ot this change, and he (ffors to make a wlags for the 8t. Louis (rado that will look bigger and wil thas than those ia use now, but will have ¢ bottom ou the style of a claret buttie, He offers also, for very tony trade, to cast shell glusses in & candle moid, and make them about two feet high. This will mako a gill of beer LOOK LIKE A QUART, and ten inches cf froth on fop of it will give the ‘draw’ a mighty gorgeots look. Idon't know what the beer wellers wlll do about it T prefer to keep my old glasses ard be a little more hasty in the draw. Nuthing like froth, you know, in a rush of business.” Another dealer on Olive street said that he didu't care much about the rike, OF courre, he wasu't golog to give o much beor for five cents; *but,” he added, *'T expect to make more mouey. My customers heve go: to have just 80 much beer overy day, and if they don't get i in two or throe glasses, they'll have it in five or six It would be very much better for me to sell ten small glasses of beer to oue man &t five cents, thau only threa or four big ones. Catch on, do you?” Dealocs who laarch their schooners upon the shoal waters that usually cover their bars are the least exer- cised, One of these artists told T'he Globe-Demoorat man in his quaintand native way ‘‘dot dem nshgooner must have less draught, dot's all,” To elu- cidate, he said that a schooner could eusily shorten her length and narrow her beam 80 as to have acarcely half her ucusl tonnage, and yet the con- sigoee would uever know the differ- ence, The bottled beer men are not likely to make any change In prices. As to those who sell bottled beer by the glass, one man said, barkerpers will be instructed to hold tha bottle & little higher as they pour it out, 50 as tu make =e: THE BOTTLE FILL PIVE GLASSES instead of four, The free varloty show pzople and the summer gardens, which sell beer at 10 cents a driok, are a little worried because they will all have to lay in & new stock of glasses, The Pittsburg manufacturer now here fulls them that it will be rather & oostly operation to blow elasses much smaller than they are using now, and that to make glasses she size of & thimble in such quant, ties s they require, & ne t of matrices must be made and a better quality of ssnd be got. It is possible, therefore, that thewe dealers will aleo embrace the fecth alternative, gising just enovgh beer to lend an smber shade to the bottom of the tumblers, Nore «f the dea'ers interviewed believe that the quality of beer scld wonld be Ceterlorated in the but all sereed that by such de vices as were found feasible the cae- tomers must unconsciou:ly be mace to stand the difference btetween the wholeeale and retail dealers, WOMAN'S WORK. Berthold, Sam E, Rogers and Deonnis Canningham (es. titiod, Neither of them know anye thing about Bernatein one way or the other, but stated that if they had a'y opivion at_all it was against his veracity, This seomed to discomfil the prosecation aud the one was cloved, Arguments wera made and Charles Rodick made a strong apoeech in which he showed up the auimus of the prosecation and the illogality of the proceedings before Wright, It was a prosecation of poor, 1gnorant foreignera who had giined the ill wil of tho villain Beruatsin, who tried in this munner to gratity his malice. After arguwents the jary retired, and in & ahort time returned a verdict of not guilty. This scomed to be agreeable to the people in the room, but the consternation and chagrin of Bernstein and his lovely end amiable wife was great. Mrs Bernstein wailed and uttered threats of vengeance againgt everybody and everything. The pair have $63 costs to settle to their discomfiture.
