There ere two children, snd they were yesterday found to be in ead need of clothes, while the home itself was very scant- ily furnished and lacking most of the usoal comforts, Steps were at once takea to relieve their wants and sup- ply them with the needfal. Taere are two erroneous ideas, which may be gsining ground, and cortainly onght to be corrected wherever found to exist. One of these is the idea with which some may be impressed that Council Bluffs has more than its shere of poor. One might easily gain thia idea from the s given by the press to the help being given. This has been gi because here who are warm promiuence there are many heartedly interested in these matters, in feeling and ia pocketbook, and who want to know what is going on 1t has also bean prominently brought before the publis to incite an in‘erest in others who are ca ss aud luke- warm about il T'he frequonty and prominence of sach montious is, therefore, no indi- cation that Council Blufls is a city of mach paaperism. In fact, the reverse is the case. There are fow in proportion who need help, but a amall proportion out of over 20,000 iahabitants furnished abundant opportunity for the proper bestowal of charity. The second erroneous notion which may have spread somewhat, is that contributions are being cacelessly dia- tribated, Taere is no canse for such a feeling, There is no cause for ruch 7| feling. The contributions which have baen placed in Rav. Mr, Lemen's have been very carefaily distributed Ho has given to no one withous first carefully loarning the actual facts, needs and worthiness. There have been filteon families thus aided, and the one yesterday makes sixteen. Of these thero have been only five men, sand every one of these completely disabled, aud not zapable of earning a cent. The others have been widowa and children. It is desirable that any who have employmoent to give of any kind should make the same known, as there are several to whom a chance to work would be a greater charity than woney, as it would give them a needed chance to help themselves. A plan has been suggeste t which he rumnmq to Monona county, | gaoms a practical cue, that those who a,u'.é watching hm' opportunity, | have on hand eny material our of stole the farmer's team, 88 which rag can be he claims merely for spite, or to get ourpsts made, should contribute snch, and some of OWA WEDN SDAY, DECEMBER awitching, while plaintiffi was un. loading a car of lumber standing on a side track, The cane was given to the jury late yesterday sfternoon. A start was made in the trial of the case of Vaimer Vs Kampf, in which the plaintiff seeks > recover damages for personal injarios reesived by an alleged asssult at Avoca last summer. On the other side it !s claimed that the injurics were slight, xud were received by his falling down some ateps while druuk This caze will probably bo fiaished to- day. 4 The geand jnrg has retarned bills against John Gerbick and John C. Oreutt VRAR\J MUSIC. The First of the Trio of Plavo Recitals by Misy Harris, Last evening was the first of the nories of piano recitals by Miss Lydia 8. Harriy, of Chicago, and it drew to Mueller's hall o fair sized audience, and one which was composed of the real music lovers of the city, who could and who did appreciate the clasaic numbers, and the truly artiatic maoner in which they wero randered. Those who knew Mies Harris when ehe was coanected with Mrs, Ford's conzervatory of music here were de- lighted at the evident progress she has made since then, while thuse who heard her for the first tim» were won- derfully surprised, her renditions ex- ceeding their expectations even, She showed the spirit of the true artist, indeed, and her opening recital here fully justified the high commendations which preceded her coming, To-morrow ovening will be the second of the series, and Saturday night will be the closing.
