Yesterday he found one family, a widow with five children, who were lonl{ in need of a stove, they having a plle of old iron which they called a stove, but which gave forth no heat but much smoke. The family were really suffering, and Mr, Lomen seeing that there was a neces: ty, provided one. Buch expenditures require money, and those who have to spare should gladly keep him supplied for sach purposes. There is another family, a widow with two children, aged eight years and three years respectively. The husband and father before his death leased a lot and built him a houre, By overwork in trying to get his little home paid for, he was taken alck and died. The house is paid for, but the lease of the lot is up, and there is danger of their losing their little home. It is proposed to raise enough money (probably $100 will be re. uired) to purchase the lot, so that the family may have their little home secured. He was an eye witness of the horrible scene, which he described to a Gazette reporter in passable English. Immediately after the affair he went north on a deer hunt, from which he returned yester- ay. The evening before old Winnemue- ca died about 100 Indians took the tquaw to a large spring, where she had been ordered to bathe. Other squaws stripped her and washed her from head to foot, and then sprinkled her with "fine ashes. Then they started for a range of hills a few miles from Coppersmith Station, leading the rquaw, neked and bare- foot, Upon arriving at a chosen spot they lit a circle of fires, which lighted up & spaca of ground about one hun- dred feet in diameter, In the center of this was a stump elght or ten inches high, to which the trembling £quaw was secursly bound by one foot with a rawhide strap. He then re- tired to his place, and the circle moved on as before. Thas they continued thelr murderous pastime until the poor, pititul object lay prone upon the ground, a bleeding, sense- less mass of mangled flesh. As sh lay upon her back, the savage who had harangued the band at first, raised a large rock over his head with both hands and inflioted the con;hds grace by smashing her skull. en there was pandemoniam for a few minutes, after which they dispersed and collect- od wood for a pile, upon which the remains of the lnckless rquaw and her babe was burned. The consequence is that not only corn, but also butter and meat have to be imported in Iuso quantities. From what has been said it wiil bo inferred that the coun- try is more pastoral than agricultural Yot one see few oattle when passing _through the country in sum- mer., The reason is that at that sea- son, as in Bwitzerland, the peasantry and themselves live in ‘‘sacters” or plotureeque huts of solid timber, Much of the agrioulture in Norway is of the most primitive character, small wooden plows, held by boys and drawn by men, being stlll commonly used in many parts of the country. The principal crops grown are oats, barley, rye and potatoes. Flax and homg are also successfully grown in southern parts, ‘L'he chief grain re. glon is the valley of Lake Mjosen, where the growing of wheat has some- times been attempted, but not with marked success. The hay crop, though by no means heavy, is widely diffused, and it is gleaned in what would gen- erally be deemed tmpossible places— on narrow ledges a thousand feet above the sea and in deep valleys where there is very little sunshine. The hay is dried in a peculiar fashion. It is not spread over the field, but is hung out as in some parts of Switzer- land, on fences or hurdles. Rows of posts are set up in the fields, and from these lines of cord or wire are stretched at a dis- tance cf one foot or eighteen inches from one another. On these linos the hay is hung, and it remains there in wet weather as In dry. In wet weatber the moisture dripa to the ground. In fine weathor the sun beats on the outer layers and the wind passes through the interior, and whatever the state of the weather the hay 1s left there till it is ready to be housed. The hay is transported from the upland regions by a novel contrivance known as the ‘‘hay tele- graph.” A rope or wire, sometimes one thousand feet in length, slopes down from the top of a precipice to the bottom of the valley. A bundle of hay is suspended from a ring through which the rope or wire passes, and is shot down to the bottom with lightning speed. Bundles of brush- wood and fire-wood are sent down from the higher ground in the same way. The soythe generally used in mowing the hay is much smaller than that in use in England. In the ‘Valdres route, however, near Odnaer, I noticed some attempts at what would be called scientific farming. In one field a mowing machine was at work, and in another the hay had bien spread out Iu the English fashion and was being turned over by a revolving rake drawn by a horse. Bothmachines were evidently of recent importation, and attracted the attention of the natives much more than that of the foreigners. Whatever may be said of the Norwegians, it can not but be ad- mitted that they are most ingenious in devising contrivances which at once save their labor and take full advan- tage of the peculiar conformation of their country. Their timber-shoots are another instax.ce of their laborious ingenuity. They make wood-ways or alides which extend over hundreds cf feet feom the tops of the hills to the seashore, Millions Given Away.
