The Land Slide of Last Week Still the Topic of Talk. Barbed Wire, Prohibition, Oon- stitutional Amendments, Drive Wells and Other Ohronic Iowa Bores. Des Moines, November 10.—At this writing the republicans aro crawl- ing from under the Jand-slido which overtook them on Tuesday. Explana- tions are in order. How comes it that the democrats elect a congressman in that republican stronghold, the Fifth district, a practical machinist, with no knowledge of statecraft, over Tama Jim Wilson! The reason may be found in the prohibition amendment and old postoflice feuds engendered during Wilson’s former term in con- gress, Io the Second district it was a weak man pitted against another weak man, but backed by a dominent free whisky element. In the Ninth district it waas a man persoually unpopular at home, with those who control votes, and pit- ted against a very able and popular man with a “bar'l,” and backed by the solid anti-| prohlbmom-t element. In short, it may be safely said the prohi- Sitlon amendment has cost the threo congressmen, It may seem oxi- cal, in view of the 30,000 majority given the amendment in the state. But thousands of democrats voted for the amendmont. Last Taesday they voted for congressmen, and the Ger-: mans and Irish voted with them. THE DRIVE WELL CASES, The lawyers are making their argu- ments in the drive well cases. Itis expected the case will be closed Satur- dsy. Ho was formerly one of the trustees, and his long service In state affatrs aud per- sonal interest in the college, renders his selection as wise and valuable. The college has just closed one of the mosat successful years of its existence. It is growing in public favor contin- ually. E Q A Voice From the Press. I take this opportunity to bear tes- timony to the efficacy of your ‘“Hop Bitters.” Expecting to find them nau- seous and bitter and composed of bad whisky, we were agreeably surprised at their mild taste, just like a cup of tea. A Mrs. Cresswelland Mrs, Con- nor, friends, have likewise tried, and pronounce them the best medicine they have ever taken for building up atrength and toning ap the system, I was troubled with costivencss, head- ache and want of appetite. My ail- ments are all now gone. I have a yearly contract with a doctor to look after the health of myself and family, but I need him not now. 8. GILLILAND, Pecple's Advocate, Pittsburg, Pa. Ottentimen we get solid with the conductor and our baggage is carried free; you wouldn't say anything about this to the house if you were on the road? Why, of course not. Most housos allow their traveling salesmen any ex- penses that mey be incurred in ex- tending courtesies to customers. This allows us to pat in bilis for carrisgos, theatre tickets and various other thivgs. OF courss, we can’t draw on the houso too heavily, for that might give us away; but I have made as high a8 $200, on the side, in one month. I could give you some other pointers, but 1 have an engagement to meet a customer at 9 o'clock, and I must be going., Oh, while it is true we work nard and have to undergo many hard- ships, wo don’t suffer very much,” And the “diummer” hurried off in a chipper sort of a way that left little doubt behind as to the peace and con- tentment that relgned supreme within his bosom. THE BAD AND WORTHLESS Are never imitated or counterfeited. This 18 especially true of a family medleine, and it is poritive proof that the remedy imituted is of the highest value. As soon as it had been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop Bitters was the purest, best and most valuable family medicine on earth, many imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which the press and people of the country had expressed the merits of H. B., and in every way trying to induce suf- fering invalids {0 use their stuff in- stead, expscting to moke money on the credit and good name of H, B, Many others started nostrums put up in similar style to H. B., with var- ously devised names in which the word “Hop” or ““‘Hops” were used in & way to induce peaple to believe they wero the same as Hop Bitters, All such pretended remedies or cures, no matter what their style or name is, and »upmlun¥ these with the word “Hop” or ““Hops” in their name or in any way connected with them or their marked a Republican reporter to one of the numerous and irrepressible ar- yeot established their title to the patents they claim, It is barely possible they have no patent at all. This was quite unexpected to the monopoly, TME AMENDMENT. The people are beginning to see the wisdom manifested by Gov. Sherman in not making haste to convene the legislature, The decision of Judge Hayes in the Davenporf case raises very important question as to the validity of the amendment. 1ho judge holds that the records of the senate show that the following was the langusge of the awendment which passed the senate: “‘No porson shall mauufacture for sale, or sell, or keep for sale as a bev- erage, or to be used, intoxicating liquors whatever, inciuding ale, wine and beer.” That in engrocring the amendment for presentation 10 the house the words ‘or to be ueed’ were omitted, and that the house did not vote for the game resolution as that which passed tho senate. 1t i singu- lar that the engroesing clerk and com- mlttee should omit those words, and also that the omisslon was not discoy- ored during the last session, espe- cially in the eenate, sion lasted nearly which Mr, Hen ¥ f th amendment, took ading part. It is probavly true that those words were stricken out In the original, after the w “or to be used” were the words “‘for other 3| purposes.” This cut off all use for sacrimental or medical Senator Woolson moved record) to etrike out ‘“‘for ot} poses,” which was adopted, which still left the very objection sought to be compassed by Woolson's motion, which \he would not bhe very likely to do, Heveral months ago I found the orig- inal manuscript of the amendment in the office of the secretary of state, copied it with care and compared it with that published in the laws, They were identical, except the punctua- tion, Hence I do not believe the words “‘or to be used” wero in the 1866 | amendment when the final vote in the senate was taken, and the error is with the secretary of the senate, who where the discus. |* my of traveling ‘“‘tourists” who go about the country selling goods to country merchants, The ‘‘drummer” was standing in the rotonda of the Windsor hotel, having just returned from a trip chrough the iterior of the state. He represents a large eastern house and commsnds an extensive trade. ““Well, I don’t know about that,” replied the commercial traveler, “We work hard and our regular salarios are not uny too large,” Yo, bt you are always on the go, from place to place, and the t scenery and assoclations make lifo more endurable,” “Most everybody talks that way, but this is really the hardest parv of the business, WE TRAVEL 50 MUCH that it makes us tired to hear anyone talk about railroads, or stages, or hotels, If it were not for traveling i life would be far more pleasant Ono docsn't hauker much after a of sconery ¢ y when it ts frem the city-—where h antage of all conve ke oxistence sail Iands him in & country vi he is in luck if he gets somuthing h an eat, Taking qne co with another, the life of a con man is not a happy one vhero the people who \l.mr« with rones make a grand Woell, what is there abou’ the life that makes it so fascinating? One rarely leaves the road alter he has fol- lowed it for several years.” ‘It ie true that we are noted for ‘sticking,’ but this is partly because of proferencs and partly booause of no- cossity, After one travels for awhile he absorbs the idea that he ls fit for nothing else—and o0 he continues to plod along in the beaten paths.
