Now York Sun For the past five years the impor- portation of crude meerschaum and amber into this country has ateadily increased, In former years ptpes and smokers’ articles comprised the sole entries of meerschaum and amber at the New York oustom house. The government levies a duty of $1.50 per gross and 75 per cent ad valorem on the manufactured article, while the $30 to $40. Amber of greenish hue is the most valuable, and a black gum, supposed to be amber, comes next in value, The popular supposition that olondy amber is of more value than clear is not supported by fact. Clondy amber is stronger, and it obscures nicotine stains, and is therefors to bhe preferred; but clear amber is prettior, and is always in demand, A combi. nation of green, black, olear and cloudy amber in a ecigar-holder was oxhibited to the reporter. It was beautiful and novel. Amber is rendily worked {uto shape with the aid of fine sand and burnishing wheels. It can bs softened by heat with the use of oil to keop it from burning, and whon ductile can be bent as eaeily a8 horn Tt is also susceptible of high polieh Amber is principally expensive ot account of the waste in its manufac ture for smokora’ use, and rubber, ool luloid and various other compositions have boen found to be good and choap substitutos A prominent retailer on Broadway said: *‘The time was whon only a capitalist could afford to amoke a meerschaum pipe. About Christmas our trado was brisk, and occasional raffles enabled a dealer to work off a stock that otherwise would remain in the loss of some stragglers and parts of companios that were detached and his case from year to year, Now we have no trouble in selling meerachaum pipes and holders. There is a steady and natural demand for them, Ifind the greater variance in tastes for pipes boetween the city and country tolks, As a general rule a city man pur. chases a pipe from motives of economy, He wants a good pipe, and doesn’t hesitate to purchase a meerschaum, Sometimes a city man buys a pipe because it has a novel shape, but, as a rule, a desire to econ. omizs leads to the abandonment of cigars and the use of a pipe. Sooner or later, however, the pipe is dis. carded in favor of cigars. With a countryman things are different. He buys apipe for daily use, and really prefers it to a cigar.” Other manufacturers said that, not- | . withstanding the enormous increase of the manufacture of cigars, the de- mand for pipes is not curtailed. One dealer said that the demand for pipes is now 20 per cent greater than five years ago and he thought pipes wculd always sell, on account of economy and their Americanized shapes. The styles of pipes are legion, but the fa. worite style in demand with smokers is the ‘‘London,” a pipe with an egg raay material is admitted free, Vienna | bowl and a straight stem. is the headquarters of the meerschaum industry, Five yoarsago a Chambers | rmpo,, J. The crude meerschaurm comes firom Kiltschik and Esk-Schehr in Anato- bia, in Asia Minor, where it is found loose or embodied in chalky, serpen- tine rocks, In tiza it varies framfj-he dimensions of a walnut to that of & man’s head. When 1t is first mined it is soft, but it becomes hard when exposed tothe air. In its virgin state it cracks very easily. The business of mining and marketing meerschaum is entirely under the control of Arme- nians. They are shrewd traders and can discount a vender of wooden hams and nutmegs ai his own trade. The crude blocks of meerschaum are therefore alightly waxed and polished 80 that the grain can be readily seen The markec is at Vienne, where the Armenian produoers have established agencies, and where the whcle world goes to buy. En marketable shape, meerschaum is assorted in four sizes. The largest size has about thirty-five pieces to the case, the second averages seventy-five pieces, the third about 175 pieces, and the fourth from 300 to 500 pieces. Kach size again is graded in eight or nine.gualities, A pepular notion ie that meerschaum is sold by weight. If euch were the case the ‘‘light” pounds would be in great demand. Conneisseurs prefer a block neither too light nor too heavy. If too light, the meerschaum is por- ous and will absorb teo much noco- tine. If too heavy, it will not color well. American workmen have not yet been found to sucoessfully manip- ulate the raw material. .All the work- men employed in the industry have been brought over from Austria, They earn big wages, and are seoretive with their handicraft.
