The Nonpareil has hushed its cry of “bar'l,” and the charge that An- derson was defeated by the corrupt use of money. In its first chagrin telt at the defeat of ita pet and its own private scheme, it merely staved that it was caused by votes being bought. This brought a furtherstorm of indignation on th izens, who, though republicans, had part of our beat citi voted? againet Andersen from honest motives, and who resented any such insult as that they had scld their votes, John Ohapman speedily saw he had made another fearful blunder, and 8o yestorday morning he flops clear ‘over again, and most humbly and penitently confesses. “The sooner the party managers rid themnelves of the idea that party IOWA ITEM:, quake on the 7th, present year will excsed $4,000,000, thigh, A bab ville. to resive a fourth portion of u | 000, Ivanhoe, Kline, with others, weut out to shoot dusks, side. P L R T WRECK ON THE WABASH One Killed and Several Reported as Injured. The Wabash train due here yestor- day morning met with a serious acci- dent about daylight, at a little station named McCury, near Stansbury, Mo. An open switch is reported as the cause by which the train was wrecked, One man named Groves, who served as baggage and express messenger, was killed, and several others are reported a8 being injured, but none seriously. The train was in charge of Conductor Dougherty, The wreck was 50 bad a one that the track could not be cleared until late in the afternoon, so that the train did not arrive here until evening. Mr. Grovee, who was killed, was a resident of St. Louis, and leaves a wife and several children, ‘Wonderful Hindsight. To the Editor of Tun Brs. The wonderful hindsight of The Nonpareil is ocortainly remarkable. How is it that some of those plain truths it so forcibly puts in its issue of yesterdsy morning did not occur to it before election, and before the nominating convention of last July? They were just as true then as now, and a decent regard for them would have saved the party from defeat in the Ninth district of Towa, at least. The remark in the same paper Thureday morning that this campaign has brought about more demoraliza- tion to this district and to the people than all else which has happened this many a year, has unquestionably a large amount of truthin it. That there | & is little sincerity in it is evident. The simple truth is that The Nonpareil wants to be on the side of victory and of the majority, and now that it is evident that the people are down on boseism and intrigue, it cravenly crowds over onto that side in the hope of getting back the power which it has loat.
