One Unfortunate Gambles Away His Hat, Boots ana sunday Dinner. A well kuown frequetiter of police headquarters, Ira Merriam, was picked up by Ofticer Barhyte Saturday night for being drunk. He had no hat, no boots, and his explanation of the ab- senco of these useful articles is to the effect that while drinking Saturday night he fell in with Jim Snodderly and One-Legged Sullivan, and played them for the drinks, He lost, and ut up his boots, and lost them, Then Kil hat went, and then the meat which he had bought for his Sunday dinner. He says they slipped out of the Leadville saloon, where they were playing, and while he was hunting up and down the streets to find them, he was gathered in by the officer, POOTLIGHT FLASHES Little Corinne Finds Herself in Bad Company-—-Coming Events. There was & goodly sized audience drawn to Dohany's hall Saturday af- ternoon by the announcement of the appearance of Little Corinne and her ‘Merrie Makers.” The roputation which Corinne has won in the past was an assurance that the entortain- ment would be one highly pleasing to those who attended, but there was a great disappointent, Little Corinne appeared worn-out, and the company supporting her proved a gathering of poor siicks® The entertainment was chiefly characterized by coarse buf. foonery and cheap features of a variety show order. Many were completely disgusted, and some of the ladies present were 8o indignant that hissing geemod the only mode of duly ex- pres: their feelings, Corinne has won a good name for herself, but by such entortainments as thai given here, she will soon throw it away. She certatnly should rally about her a better company. To-morrow evening Benj. Magin- ley in ‘A Square Man is to appear at Dohsny's. The Ncnpareil yesterday devoted about two colomns to an attempt to detend M j r Anderscn's connection with the Miller will caso The de fense summed up is to the ¢fTsct that the will wae not forged, nor was it tampered with, but was honestly made by old Mrs Miller out of gratitude to Major Auderson because he secured a divorce for her. Knowing that this did not meet the charge made at all, the defenders of Anderson epun out the explanation and mixed iv up #o that it might blind and mislead the rend-rs into the belief that possibly the charge #as refuted. The assertion has been made, and the court papers produced in tull, and not yet contra dicted, that old Mrs, Miller, is ap parently so unsound in mind that her property had to be placed in the hauds of a trustee, was given to will making, and made four wills, under one of which Major Andeson claims her property and asks to prevent it going to her children, The receipt has already beon produced, showing that Anderson was paid in full for his legal services $260 T'ho records show that he did nov pro- cure oven a divoree for her, but tha the decision won 1n her faver in the lower court was reversed by the upper court, and she got no divorce at all Yet Anderson received his $260, and hoving lost the case, claims that the old laay's gratitude entitles him to the property, which would othorwise go to the children, Admituing all that he and his triends ciaim in de- fense it is diflicult to see how any one with the least sense of manhood could tight in the courts for property on which he has no claim beyond the al- leged gratitude of an old woman of doubiful soundness of mind, for whom he had served unsuccessfully s attor- ney, and had yet been paid hberally Wuy shall this bs an excuse for An derson to try to gt the property away from the orphaued children? ANDERSON'S RPEECH, We heard And reon speak at Red Oak Monday night. Ho was not as abusive as usual, but his effort was very tame. He charged that -Pusey is the railroad candidate and was nominated because he had a bar’l, which he said was being used. He proved nothing, however, which was probably au oversight on his part, In regard to himself, he said that the railroads opposed his nomination and are opposing his election. He did not mention the fact that the Rock Island and C. B. & Q. both heid their traina for his speecn at Carson, and the Q at least sent a special, He said nothing of the passes he has given (and we have proot) during the campaign, He said nothing of the Randolph postoftice bond or the Mil- ler will case, He did not mention the Aldrich Pass bill or say anything about the delegate he bought in the Stockton-Harvey contest. He also fatled to etate that he borrowed $300 alimony of & woman whose divorce he had ceused, and is paying it off in’in- stallments of $20 every six yenrs. (He paid tho second installment dr. wg the present campaign to avoid legal process)) Iu fact, the major wasn't feeling well, and he omitted many interesting points which he will have leisure to consider after Pusey's election, — Union-Arrow, (Rep.) THE OFFICIAL DCCUMKNT. The Walnut News, as do other pa- pers, keeps standing the copy of the|d notoricus postoflice bond given by Anderson, and in addition the papers in the case of wife beating, the record in regard to Anderson drawing the Ely twice while in the army, the suit rought against him on that account by the government, and the judg- ment obtained, and winds np by an offer ot $100 to any ore who will prove that the records as given are not true. Here is a chance for Anderson, WHY GO TO NEBRASKA { The henchmen of A, R, Anderson have gone to the trouble of sending all the way to Lincoln county, Neb., to get a certificate from one Donala- son to the effect that ho did witness the execution of the will made by Martha Miller to A. R. Anderson, and that Dr, O. B. Bobyshell also wit- nessed the signing of the instrument. Why did they not save themselvea much trouble by getting such a certifi- cate from Dr, Bobysheli? He is right here in town. The men who sent away to Nebraska to obtain Donald- son's affidavit see and talk to Dr, Bobyshell every day of their lives, Why did they not tuke his aflidavii? For the simple reason that Dr. Boby- shell dsnies aver having signed such a document, Ho testified i court that he did not sign it and knew nothing about it, Ha declares so to all who speak with him on the subject. That will1s fraudulent and Dounaldson knows it to be such, notwithstanding his affi- davit,— Glenwood Jowrnal. TRUE REPUBLICANIRM, Eli Clayton was down in Monigom. ery county this week working for Mr, Pusey's election. Whatever Clayton does hodoes boidly, When he made up his mind that no true republican could support the man who bought his nomination he plainly told the man- agers that they had departed from re- publican principles and he would not follow th m,— Walnut News, NEW YORK AND IOWA, In New York there are many troe republicans who refuse to support Fol- ger. They say he is a pure, good man, but they will not endorse the methods by which his frieuds nominated him, If this is & sufficient resson for New Zork republicane, should it be strange that in a district, where corrupt means were used to nominate a corrupt man, true republicans should protest.
