How Three Porsons Wore Affcctsd by the Porsian [Intoxicant. New York Tribune. “Ifyou will call and see moat about 8 o'clock on Mouday evening,” wrote a well known English physician who is at preseat staying in this city in the neighberhood of Union Square, “Iwill giveyouan opportunity of trying the effects of hashish, the drug with which Alexandre Dumas worked his miracles 1n ‘Monte Cristo.'” The physician’s graphic description of the extraordinary properties of the re nowned Oriental intoxicant so wmuch impressed the reporter to whom the invitation was addressed that ho at once made up his mind to be present and to see for himself whether or not the description was overrated. Hashish is a preparation of Can- nabis Indica, or Indian hemp. It consists mainly of the resinous exuda- tion of the plant, nuxed with some strongly flavored compound which hides its naturally bitter taste. Dr. Pereira, u high medical authority, calls the drug a soother of pain, a narcotic, an intoxicant and a sudorific. Prof. Beattey and other say that its general effects are similar to those of opium, but do not involve the un- pleasant after results which follow the administration of the lstter. Very little seems to be known about the mysterious proceed; and although the hemp from which the rosin is procured is the same plant which is grown for manufacturing purposes,in temperate climates, it 18 only the hemp grown in Nopaul, Herat, Persia wnd a fow other tropical and sen nical coun- tries which supplies heshish posscssing the peculiar propertivs which have rendered it so useful to the novelist, and so interesting to the man of science. In India the leavgs and etalk of the plant are, at certain sea- sons, coyered with this resinous exu- dation, which is collected by men in leather dresses, These men run rap- idly through the hemp-fields until their garments aro thickly coted with it; und the result is a greenish, sticky substance, with aslight aromatic color and bitter taste. For the purpose of medicine, howover, the drug 1s pro- cured in a more offectual way by ma- cerating the flowering top of the fe- male hemp plant in spirit. The mass is then pressed, and the liquor is dia- tilled and_evaporated by iwcans of u water bath, Tho reporter reached the Knglish doctor’s rooms punctunlly at 8 o'clock Two other gentlemen, an Ame; dootor and & musical componer, already there. ““I have,” tha physician, “re- ceived from o small quantity of what I am assured is rcal hashish,” He producad = little box, which had been covered with silk and carefully sealed, This he opened and handed to his guests for their iuspection, The box contatned adark-green viscid mass mixed with yellowing particles, and partly enveloped 1o withered rose: lenves. Al present regarded the drag with curiosity, and expressed their willingness to try its eflects; but the physician having declared that they would be more susceptible to its infla. ance after having hed sumething to eat, all sat down tosupper. The Kog- lish docter was in sowe doubt s to how much of the drug should be taken; and the American, who had brought in his pocket a pair of siaall scales und a number of very minute weights, sug- wested twelve or fifvcen grains might be swallowed with impunity. Final- ly, bowever, it was decided that, as t{e compound which had been sent from Pereia was evidently not as pot- eut a8 the pure cxtractum cannabs tesspoonful of it. Having finished supper, the physician and his gaests each swallowed that quantity, The patural Dbitternces of the drug most concealed by sowie con- apparently consisting of sogar and crushed almonds, with which it had been] mixed. It was amueing to see the auxiety de- picted on the tace of the musical zen tleman a& he took his dose. He evi- dently expected that its effects would be instantaneous, and that he would at once subaide upon the carpet in an uncontrollable freuzy. In five win- utes, however, as he felt as well as be- fore he began to express his inred- ality. The Awerican doctor improved the occasion sud read a number of notes from wedical writers upon the eubject of Iudtau hemp. For more thau an hour no ome complained of any sbnormal sensations; and the composer was the first who afforded any indieations thet the hushish was affectiog him. He sseumed & jaunty air, betrayed an spparently uousual THE DAILY BEE- indico: it woald be safo t take half & | amount of gayety, and began to pro. claim how comfortable and happy he felt He said it soomed as is tho sun were shining on him and as if he were lolling in a hammock in a garden of thhwers. The Amerioan doclor, who was still quite unaffected, exem ined him, but tound that, save for a slight dilation of the pupils of the eyes, his condition was normal, or neatly so. Helay on a couch at full length, unwilling, apparently, to be disturbed, but perfectly sensible when any cne addrossed him. The physi cinn: was anxious to take his tempera ture, aud went to his bureau to find a clinfesl thermometer for that purposc; but ere he had ended his search, he, too, be came unmistakably aftested. Ho quitted the drawer at which he was standing, began to speak very rapidly and upon a great variety of subjects haviug no palpable connection with other; and aa eoon as he eat down in his chpir ngain, burst into a fit of laughter which brought tears to his cyos, and which was caught up and echoed by the musical gentleman on the couch, The reporter also bogan to be conscious of a strange physical drowsiness, He was unwilling to ex- ert himself or even to talk, and soon the influence of the hashish became so pronounced as to render him no longer able to pay particular attention to the symptoms shown by the others, Ha believes that he did not closo his oyes; and his senses were all, to a cer- tain extent, awake, for he saw the mueical gentleman walk by a circuit- ous route to the piano. So strangely light and unmaterial did he feol ac this time that he remembers reflect. ing that, had he wished to cross the room, he would have floated, and could have done g0 by a mere exer- cise of the will. He remembars, too, hearing the musician play semething, but what it was he cannot oay, for it seemed too wonderful to have been composed by mortal man. It sounded as if it were produced by an immense orchestra, or a huge and porfect organ, played boneath a vast dome. The senses, indeed, seemed to have become supernatu ly acute. KEvery sound was magn ed, sometimes even to an almost alarming extent; and visible objects were, apparently, similarly increased beyond their real size, and were rendercd distorted and monstrous as if by an intervening plate of inferior window-glass. Everything assumed a strange and fantastic shape, and the physician and his guests appeared liko gizantic carthmen out of the German mythography. Out of the shadows, too, in the more distant corners of the room, strange figures seemed to rise and steal about the floor, either crawl- ing dejectedly, or rolling as if in pent- up laughter; and other figures, no less grotesque, danced with queer antics and extreordinary agility. None of these apparitions, however, were ut nll terrifyling, or oven cupleasant, Each imp, no matter how contorted and monstrous his body might be, had a face jovial and ridiculous, Nor was thero any monotony, Kvery moment changes touk place, and every change was an incentive to laughter. All, howover, appeared at the time to be perfectiy natural. The visions affected the capacity for enjoyment much as a clever theatrical performance might affect 1t. They seemed “to be vastly amusing, but at the same time to have nothing whatover supernatural in them. The land of dreams, conjured up by tho hashish, was appurently the ordinary land in which men move every day, and it caused no more fecling ot overwhelming surprise. It was, in fact, quite natural that everything should be unnatural. Tt was natural that a huge hen should como out of the gloom, give vont to a cry like that of a donkey, and then laugh with ever-widening beak, and it was natural that every shair should be alive, and that every- thing in the room should have a round, red, grinning, laughter-provoking faces Somotines, however, the visions as- sumed a purely beantiful type; and lovely valloys, distant mountains tinged with the glow of the setting sun, and glorious cataracts tumbling hither and thither in foaming wrath, camo successively before the eyelike the scenes of a mugic lantern, Bat everything was real. Each scone was one that could, spparently, be lived in and enjoyed; and there was noth- 2 any of them like the flatness and comparative colorlessness of @ picture, From 10 o'clock onward, nearly all through the night, the hours as they struck were audible, but on each oc casion they ussumed sume now dis- guike—now the voice merry gient, and now the good-hwmnored roar of some fantastic beast, Graduoally, however, tho effects of the drug grew weaker, and the vividness of the hal- lucinations wenkened proportionately. Then sivep came. --I"I}IDAY OCT BER 13 7 TRAFFIC IN SWISS GIRLS. A Nefarious Business Conducted in Russia and Poland, Londcn Tratn The way in which the traffic in young girls—for that is what it really amounts to—is conducted is vividly described in a brochure written by M. Louis Uoffmann, master in & pub lie school at Corgemont, who, having been a private tusor both in Rossis and Russian Poland, speaks with authority Thero are twenty-two agents, ho says, at St. Petersburg, twenty-one at Moecow, and thirty at Warsaw for providing Russtan fam ilies with foreign governesses, tutors and bonnes, Most of these agents make their rcquiremonts known through advertisoments in Swiss pa- pers, and many of these have corres. pondents at Geneva and Lousanne to whom applicants aro instructed to ap- ply. The representations made w0 oung women applying for places are always highly colored, Places at fair salarios, thoy are told, can ba assured to them beforehand in highly respectable families—master and mistress gonorous and amiable ifo oasy and advancement ocertain, [uquiries as to character and qualifi- cations are not very searching, and the tostimonials required are generally easily furnished. Some are in- formed that Mme, X—— Y—— or ——ia not ready to receive them; others learn to their horror that Mme. A or B—— has changed her mind, or that, tired of waiting, she has found a governess for herself. On these and other pretexts the girls are retained in the agent's house at loast a fortnight, often for several weeks. They are lodged in crowded and unwholesome rooms. For sup- per thoy havo two cups of tea and a morsol of villainous bread; for broakfast the same. Fordinner soup, one meat, bad vegetables and detesta- ble water. For this they pay from 80 to 100 kopeks a day. = What with the expense of the journey, the com- miesion and the charge for lodging, the agent contrives to got the girls into her debt for the wholo of their first yoar's salary, and the law allows her to retam all her debtor's offects us security for her claim. In Poland the salary of a gov- erncss varies from 12 to 25 roubles a month (from 36 to 60 shillings), of a boune trom 26s to 3b6s. In Russia, however, salaries are 100 per cont higher than in Poland, But owing to fluctuations in the value of the rouble these figures are littlo more than ap- proximate, Monsieur Hoffman says that, although the rouble is worth nominally 3.23f, to 3.0L, its pur chasing power for most of the articlos of a governess would be likely to buy cannot be reckoned at more than a franc, as compared with its valus in Switserland, Whes the would-be governess at length reaches the goal of her ambition and roceives an appointment, her troubles, with a few excoptions, only begin. The family by whom she i ongaged live probably” in some wild place in the country, twenty to thirty miles from the nearest railway station. she finds herself among people with whom ehe has not a single 1dea in common, of whose language she does not know a word aud whose habits, as likely as not, shock her sense of de- concy. If he does not want her to At 8 o'clock in the morning the wholo party wasx wide swake. The American doctor said that he had not been in the least degreo affected, and he gave an amusing description of the way in which the others had behaved themselves during the night. The musical gentleman, after leaving the piano, had made attempts to fly like a bird, and had then taken up a posi- tion on the floor. The English physi- cian had put his feet on the seat of an arm-chair, and, with his head on a hassock, had talked auconnected non- sense end laughed frantically for nearly two houre; and the reporter, snugly lying on & couch, had, with the exeoption of intervals during which he danced with consmdarable yrace and agility with an iwsginary pari- ner, been tolerably sensible until b o'clock, and had been able to answer questions, Of what he said, however, he has 1ot even the vaguest recollec- tion, The doctor had taken his tem perature at 2 o'clock, when he seemed to be more under the influence of the drug than at any time previously, and | had found 1tto benormal; but hia pulse |at the same time was beating at the rate of one hundred per minute, The others, when examined, had given noarly the same results; but at 8 o'clock there was uo fever, no discom- fort, and no sense of having “‘make a night of it” exyerienced by any of the party, save the doctor, who had re- wained swake the observe. go (unless sheis & person of excepiional strength of ohsracter), go she doos not.
