Special Dispateh to Tis D, New York, Ooctober d.--Peter Cooper callod upon the tarifl commis- sion at Windsor hotel, and after an informal conversation of an hour's duration tho comminssion was called to order by President Hayes and listened to the reading, by Mr. Cooper's secre- tary, of “an open letter” on the tariff question, It opens with u proposition (as the result of his own experience) that all trade with foreign nations is a kind of commercial war; war of in- torests from which evils may result and heve resulted, that are only com- parcblo with the evils of aciual war, Thomas G, Sherman, represouting the cxecutive committes of the Brook- lyn Revenue Keform club, nddressed the committee as a representative of the modorate section of the club, and held that taxes ght to be reduced £120,000,000 or $160,000,000 annu- ally Mr. Oliver offered the following resolution, which was adopted, Kesolved, That on account of the limited timo at the disposal of the commicaion, the order concluding the taking of testimony at Philadslphia October 16 cannot be changed, There- foro, all persons intorested will take notice that the open sessions of the tarifl commission for testimony, state- meonts, otc,, will end on the date above named, Adjourned till to-morrow.
