A vory pleasant surprise party was given Mr. and Mrs, J. Mathiesen at their residence on South 11th atreet, Saturday night, the occasion being the silver wedding day of the host and hostess, The party conalsted of about thirty couples, who assembled at Mr. and Mrs, T. A. Jenson’s home, from which about 8:30 p. m., the procession, headed by the U, P. band, proceeded to the residence of the Mathiesen's, which they took by storm on the firat assault, Meantime a train of pro- visions had arrived and tho tables were spread with an excellent lunch and plenty of wine, both of which re. ceived just attention. At the con- clusion of the supper Mr. Pelle made a short speech on behalf of the party and presented Mr. and Mrs. Mathie- pen with an elegant, solid silver tea and dinner set, beautifully engraven as follows: ““Compliments to ¢ Mr. and Mrs, J, Mathiesen, on thelr Bilver Wedding Day. From friends in Omaha, September 30th, 1882."” Mr. Mathiesen was so taken by sur- prise that he could "enly respond by briefly thanking all his friends. = Seon after Mr. Schoubo made s little: ad- dress on the ups and downs of married life, and closed with a toast to ‘the bride and groom of twenty-five years ago. The remainder of the evening was pleasantly spent. . The Danish quar. tette gave several beautiful songs and the enjoyment was protracted until midnight when the invading party re- tired without the loss of a single one, Hermesians. This society, which was organized about a year ago, held its fall reunion and first regular meeting for the season of 1882:83 Mondgyat the residence of G, M. uitchufi, Esq., and way honored by the presence of a large number of the friends of the members and representatives of other htenry societies of the city. The program for the evening was varied and interesting. Miss Maul rendered a selection frcm one of the poets in a very pleasing manner, Miss Grace Wilbur read an article on Moses, and Misses Maul and Crovnse and Mr. Buckenridge contributed musie, vocal and instrumental.
