BEAR-HUNTING IN CALIFORNIA. Hair-Broadth Escape of & Boy A Mighty Hunters. , of Olff Glen, Ven- 111, communicates the I: The Robert Ly tura county, following to The Ventura Sigr timber clad hills at the Matilija- seem to he teeming with droves of grizzly bears. Last woek n'ne were seen in one day near the rauch of Rafeel Ruiz, wome of them monstors in &ize; and_on Thuraday, August 24, ror Ramon Ortega shot three sri: Ortega and his twelve-yeer old boy were riding in the hills abova the Matilija looking for cattle, when one large grizzly and two that were considerably smaller came oug of the brush and halted not more than fity feet in frontof them, Orte- ga jumped from his horse to got a good shot, when his horse got frightened at the sight of so many bears, and staried, and ran away about one hun- dred yards, when he stepped on his bridle and stopped. Ortega took a good aim at the big bear, and dropped it dead at the first shot. He then drew on one of the smaller bears, and it too tumbled in its tracks, never rising again. The other bear then took to the brush followed by a sav- ago dog. After assuring himelf that the two bears were dead, Mr. Ortega sent his boy on oot to bring back his horse. The boy started, but before hie got to the korse, his dog, closely pursued by a savage and angry bear, overtook him. As soon es the bear saw the boy ho rushed at him, paying no more attention to the dog, and the boy was too frightoned to do auything but stand still and <all to kis father to save him. Ortege seized his rifle and fired just ss the bear hod raised on his haunches to strike the boy; the bullet knocked the bear dowu, but he raised and again rushed at the boy, the blood streaming from a bellet hole in his side, and this time ho rushed at the fear-parelyzed boy with bloodshot eyes and foaming, open mouth, With a last ory “He's got me, father!” the frightened boy saek to the ground, and the desperate father sent & second bullet from his faithful repeating rific crashing into the bear's body, and with au almost human cry of agony the savage brute fell 'vackward and relled down ¢ha hill. Ortega rushed to the boy, &nd found him uninjured, And then the great hunter, who had killed more grizzly beers than any man in Southern California, thanked God for the miraculous preservation of histoy’s life, and for some time he Wwas 100 wealk from the:shock of his boy's great eril to even lift his rifle. Hedid not Poat for the mwounded. besr, for the brush was very dense at the bottom nf the ravine, and he thought he had Lad edventures suficient for one duy. The largest of the two bears wonld weigh over ‘£fteen hundred younds. It was all two strong horses could do to drag it to a tree nesr by. The other, which was quite poor, would weigh seven hundred pounds. ‘Ortega took off their pelts, and the largest one measured eight feet jo longth and seven and a half feet in breadth. He has the skins at his cabin, and they are both beausful furs. Senor Ortega certainly deserves great credit for his nerve and courage in that terribly trying tid ‘One winter, on the Sespe ranche, Oriega caprured fifty-four bears with #he lasso. Mr. Edwin Booth said recently that he supposed his lungs were sffected having a persistent cough until he saw Dr. Mack of who | found that thia W disturbance of the liver. ymptom ar N wbove item, which h or 1o rounds of the prees, s wee other than to ds of Mr. Booth, exaept ' that it brings to light & truth of (he greatest importance to the world, Ko h life with rev lation and ki sought by o cliange of air and the use of cough medicines to uvert tho imponding dis aster, It may safely be said tha more than half the coughs which ar siflicting the world to-day do not have their origin in the lungs, but are the result of more serious troubics in other organs of the body. *Liver coughs” sre exoeadingly common nnd yot aro almost whoily misunderatood. Arising from a disordoered state of the liver they show their results by con- westing the lungs, Ia fact, the efiorts of the liver to throw off tho disease, produce covghing even when the lungs themselves are in & healthy state. But it is a mistake to suppose that such delicate tissues as the lungs can long remain in a healthy coudition when they are being constantly agi- tated by coughing, Such a theory would “be absurd. Cousumption, which was feared at firs*, is certain to take place unless something is done to check the cause. This must be plain to evory thoughtful mind. It stands to reason, therefore, that the only way in which *liver cougha” can bo removed is by restoring the liver to health, In this connection another fact of great importance becomes known which can best bo explained by the relation of an actual event, Mr, WV . a wenlthy cattle desler of Colorado, became greatly reduced in health and camo east to Chicago for the purpose of being cured, He con- sulted Dr, J——, one of the leading physicians of the country on pulmonic subjccts and bogan treatment for the curo of his lungs. But his cough in- creased while his strength decreased Finally he determined to consult un- other physician and applied to Dr. B——. After a careful examination he was informed that his lungs were perfectly sound, while his kidneys wero in a most terrible condition. He had all the apparent symptoms of consump- tion but he was suffering from the terrible Bright's disease. The symp- toms of consumption are often the sure indications of Bright's disease. The above truths regarding coughs have been known by the leading phy- sicians for several years, but. the pub- lic have never been informed of them, They are serious tscts, however, and should be understood by all, so that dangers ‘which might otherwise prove fatal may be avoided. They clearly prove one great truth which is, that the kidneys and liver are such vital organe that their health his body and ¢ i their combined | | strengtii to pull ktm from his appall- | ing positton. Thoy held his head above the wator, which rose slowly about his body. The men found they must make a ftinal effort, Then his head was lowered and they all caught hold and pullod desperately.
