The stock market opened strong, but #0on becamo rather heavy and remained so until near 11 o'clock, from which time un- til a little before 12 it was strong, Soon aftor 12 the market became rather heavy for the general list. In the last hour the market was steady and prices advanced a fraction, In the last half it was decidedly weak and the lowest prices of the day were made. H. Vanderbilt’s advancing United States bonds to ease the money market is that a bank offered to borrow from Vanderbilt $10,000,000 in United States 4 per cent bonds which he holds, advancing thereon the full warket price of the bonds, or about 12,000,000, and charging him for money 85 advanced a low rate of interest. It is understood this offer of the bank was part of the scheme to have United Statos internal revenue receipts deposited in the bank, which would give the bonds bor- rowed from Vanderbilt to the government a8 secarity for internal revenue receipts on governwent monoy thus left with it. Two - purposes would baserved by the operation. The first would be that the mouey, instead of beln; locked up 1a the treasury, would be diverted from its way to the treasury to p M Aiie national bauk, where it could be lent ir the market, and the other, which would concern the bank alone, would be the prefits which it could make by lending goverement deposits, The Evening Post says: *“Our understanding is Vanderbilt declinad to lend his bonds, which are all registered in his name, and that the scheme has been abandomed.” The following paragraph finds puslica- tion: 441t is reported Secrecary Folger stated thia morning the government would take what action would be necessary to main- tain an easy money market, When he re- turee to Washington he intends to look into the matter very thoroughly, and if the law will permit he will recommend the government shall loan money to banks and take bonds for security.” Vp to 12:30 the assistant United States treasurer had redeemed $1,891,300 of called bonde.
