The man wlo last winter cut such a Omaha, newspaper not of De months past been living in the coun- , and has kept rather shady, even his neighbors aot know- ing much about him, cxcept as they figare i nd gained 80 much riely under the name ive Tlazen, has for some try near this ci saw him ocoasionally dash along the road in his buggy with a pair of come- alongs clinking in eome ostentatious place, a8 though he was desirous of L,i..g known to be on some wild chase after some oriminal. Yesterday he came to the light, however. A man named Giardner, who claims to be a United States detective, drove out to Hazen’s heuso abont 3 o'clock yester- day morning and arrested him on three separate charges, and brought him to this city. The name by which he is known here, and under which he was arrested, is L. E. Curtis, but Constable Rosecrans, who has kuown him in the pesst, recognized him at once as none other than Hazen, The charges brought against him in- dicate that he has been cutting quite a figure here, one of these in that he ob- tatnod 86 60 worth of goods at Mras, Good’s hair store, representing him- solf to be in the employ of the Union Pacific rallway, and that the company was owing him, he would settle for the goods as soon as the pay car came along, A little more interesting case is that which John Streyer, who is em- ployed at the transfer, is interested. Streyer had a son who somo time ago was takon sick with what was pro- nounced the smallpox. The boy wae taken by tho authorities to the pest house, and there died. Mr. Steyer was not satisfied in his own mind that his son had the small | & pox, and did not think the authoritica should have taken him to the pest house, Hazen, aliss Ourtis, is said to have reprosented to Stewsr that he v of Pinkerton's foroa, and that he was looking up certain small pox watlers, and could show | that Steyer’s boy did not have the small jox at all. Mr Steyer suys that in the beliof that Hazen, or Car- {is, could get these facts, he was bled to the amount of $30 in all. Mr. Steyer filed still another infor- mation against the detective for ob- taining a boat under false pretenses. The fellow had told him that he had got to croas the river on some quiet business, to look after some atolen proporty, or something of that | sort, and 8o he lat himn have the boat. It was never returned. Hazen was called upon to moet these charges in Justice Abbott's court yesterday morning. The cases were postponed until afternoon, and the prisoner was left in charge of the arresting officer Gardner, Hazen wanted to seo several different par- ties, and waid he hoped to be able to fix the mawer up. In going the rounds he gave the officer the slip, and has not yet turned up. The officer ways he was thrown off his guard by tho statement of J. T. Stuart, the depnty United States marshal, that the fellow was all right and would not skip. SRR FOR SALE. My residence,|No, 716 Fourth streot Baneroft*) L. F. Mugruy, !
