While the unsabdued pashas of the Tammany a Irving hall tribes are drilling iheir Bodouins for active set- vice at the state democratic conven- tion at_ Syracuse, “Uncle Sammy" Tilden, New York’s political khedive, is in retirement, wrestling with a pri vate architectural problem, A yoar or 80 ago he decided te transform his famous Gramercy park retreat into a mansion that would throw Vander- bilt's new palace completely in the shade. At that time it waa raid that the house, with its owner and other curios, was to form a sort of matri- monial prize package for a St. Louis belle, but as thore is no nursery in the now edifice the story is not behioved to have been made out of whole cloth. Bo that as it may, the mansion is un- doubtedly the hobby of Mr, Tilden's life, and when completed it will have cost something like & half a million dollars and eclipse in artistic finlsh anything of the kind in this country. For months past he has spent one or two days every week in his architec- tural temple, and when he does not appear on the scene of action he sends down his tri-woekly documents of in- struction from his §5,000,000 place on the Hudson, When he began the alterations Mr, Tilden intended to spend about 850,- 000 on them, but that sum was swell- ed to $300,000, and it is thought that $200,000 more will be required to fin- 1sh the decorations. The butlding fronts on Gramercy Park and takes in No. 15, Mr, Tilden’s old house, which has been remodeled throughout and united to an adjoining building of the same size. Thisgives the new palace, which is four stories high, a frontage of sixty and a depth of ove hundred and ten foot. Traces of the Gothic style of archi- tooture are noticeable in many parts of the building, but no conventional rules have been carried out. The architects have worked under the personal super- vision of Mr. Tilden, and the result is one of the most unique and beautiful residences in America. The front of the building 1s based on brown sand- stone from Belleville, New Jorsey, with a superstructure of delicate pink Scotch sandstone. The prevailing tone of the fscadoe is pink, and a bril- liant contrast is brought about by nar- rew belts of Maine granite, which separate the native and imported sand- stono. These black granite belts are highly polished and prettily engraved. The arches and window trimmings are all of black granite. There are two entrances to the front of the mansion, and tho main one, leading into Mr, Tilden’s old house, is remarkably beautiful. Four col- umns of polishod red mottled granite support the handsome porch over the main entranae, and above these col- umns are four colossal feminine busts, representing the seasons, These were carved from Scotch granite and are tramed in graven foliage, typical of spring, summer, sutumn and winter. A slab _of black granite, so highly polished that its under side reflects like a mirror, forms the top of the porch. The stone trimmings of the porch, and indeed of the whole front of the house, are beautifully and elaborately carved, and the designs are as quaint as they are varied. In the countless clusters and garlands of foliage are birds, rabbits, equirrels, frogs, toads, turtles, snakes, lizards, bugs and bug- terflies, the whole forming a marvel- ously executed study in natural his- tory. It would take hours to exam- ino the foliated carvings in the pink sandstone, for these carvings are rep- resentations of no less than 159 varie- ties of foliage, ranging from fern and clover to maple and oak. In this mass of foliage are 300 animals, birds, reptiles and insects, Between the two immense bay win- dows is found one of the most striking pieces of decoration on the building. Ina large panel of brown sandstone are five niches containing the heads of Shakspeare, Milton, Goethe, Dante and Benjamin Franklin, the latter oceupying the center, with the others at the corners of the tablet, The high roof is broken by dormer win- dows of modern Gothic style, and finials ornament the coping, Notwithstanding the artistic beauty of the exterior cf the mansion, it is the interior that will excite the moat general admiration from lovers of pro- fuse decoration, The front rooms, a parlor and a library, lauk the hall- way, and one of the huge bay windows some of your many readers, For the northern states T place at the head the Russian, brought to this country about seven years ago by Russian Menonites. use it is perfectly hardy hrive in any soil Second, it is a rapid grower, Third, 1t produces large ntities of leaves which furnish sk of the fin- o3t quality, Fourth, it produces the best fruit of all the mulberties aud the most of it It can be grown to the height of forty feet and ‘from three to five foot in diameter, or can bo eheared to any sizo or shape you like. There arc eleven varietios of the Morua Alba, or white mulberry, Among them arethe Morus Tartarica, Morus Multioantis, Morus Mosetts, Morus Japanios, English white and others, The only hardy mulborry among the above named paris of the Morus Tartarien from Russia, where it has long been uaed for silk, It produces a rodish white fruit of inferior quality. For the south there is but little difference in value of any «f the Morus Alba varioties, The Morus Multicantis produces the largest leaves, but the common old English is hardy and is planted largely. The following table will show the rnll:tive value of the leaves used for silk: Eighteen pounds of Mullicaulis make ono pound of silk, 16 pounds of Eog- lish white, 14 pounds Moretta, 13 pounds Tartarica, 13 pounds of Albra Rosia, 12 pounds of Japanica, 13 pounds of Russian, Nearly all of the silk producing countries of the old world have their favorites for silk, In China and Japan tho Mullicaulis is said to be the best, while Frauce clings fondly to Morus Alba Rosia, In Italy the Maretta leads all others, while the German thinks tho Morus Migra has no equal even if it does produce silk of a courao quality, Soil and climate have much to do with the ditferent varieties, but if were to plant two acres il matters in what part of the United States, one would be the Russian, and then if you tire of silk culture 1ts fine fruit will more than pay for labor and ex- pense of growing Never plant the common American or Morus Rubra nor the Paper mulberry, and T would not advise planting Morus Nigra for silk culture. Plant ona year old trees, Avoid cutiings as they are not sure. In conclusion let me say that in Europe and Asia tho mulberry is con- sidered the most valuabie of all trees, for it produces the most delicious fruit, Its timber is used in the arts and for fuel, the bark and fiber for paper and fabric silk, Atsomo future time I will send you an article of the different kinds of silk worms, G, J.
