The Crawford County Annual Fair Pouttical and Bnsiness Notes, Co respondence of Tiy: Brr, Dextsoy, Towa, September 13— Denison strects have presentod a lively appenrance dnrivg the lust three dage. The Crawford county sunual fair began hero on the 13th. Not- withstanding farmors have not taken h intereat as thoy ought the fair largely attonded. Competent of course, better than judges eay though not so our exhibit, large, is that at the o fair. The oration was delivered yesterday by Hon. J. F. Wilsou, Mr. Wileon began by ying he would chcose one thome and stick to it. He went to speak about competiticn, showing that this is the most prominent feature of our on county fairs; showing also what a prominent part competition plays in improving our stock, etc. From com- petition the speaker naturally went on to discuss compensation. He impar- tially admitted that railroad companies rometimes extort too high rates, but at the same time too many farmers are not willing to allow even a fair profit. Corporations are good in their place, but they must mind their own business and not meddle with public matters, individual or firms. The next point was that 1t is information wlich makes a man powerful, Farmers must pay more attentionto this, The speaker finished by suggesting that this’knowledge and intellectual de- velopment be encouraged by prizes, Each county fair should offer a prize for the best eseay by a man under twenty-five on a subject furnished by the directors. The prize essays from ARTISTIC POTTERY,| all the county fairs should be entered for competion at the state fair. Sub- jects should also be offered the ladies, on matters of interest to them. Mr, Wilson speaks with the air of a man who has confidence in his utterances This mere statement of propositions almost carried conviction, President McWilliams and Secre- tary Gill deserve much credit for doing their best to make our faira succesy. The 14th was a happy day for our politician, as the congressional nomi- nees, Major Anderson and W, H, M, Pugey were both here, besides Mr, Chapman, of The Nonpareil and Hon, J. F, Wilson already mentioned. Mr, Wilson dined with our post- master, Mr, J. Fred. Meyers, and, to- gether wllh geveral of our citizens, was entertained with tea at Hon, H. C. Laub's, Our hotels haveo been crowded with gueats during the fair, We notice that our popular hard- ware man, J, B, Romaus, 1s disposing of ugood deal of coal, This hot weather cannot last much longer. The two combatants, Bills and Rid- dle, of whom we wrote you some time ago, are both acquitted, Bills was de- fended by Mr. T. N. Shaw, and Rid- dle was discharged because no one ap- peared against him, We noticed sundry large boxes be. ing opened at Carr's book store, We adviee the curious to call and see what they contained. Our schools begin next Monday with ex-State Superintendent Von Coellu as principal. Wo predict a very succeseful session. Many of our young people ave leaving the county for an education. Four of them have just started for some college at Mt. Vernon, and others will go to other schools, Laby JEAUTIFIERS — Ladies, you cannot make fair skin, roey checks, and sparkling eyes with all the cos- metics of France or beautiliers of the world, while in poor health and noth- ing wiil give you such rich blood, good health, strength and beauty as Hop Bitters. The oat eeop never was better, both in quality and yield. Farmers are all in good spirits’ and expeet good prices for their corn, Our town has been visited with a new graw firm which has erected a new elovator with & 70-horse power i ih I'he weus ber corn in eality, The dry hot engine and will be ready for business in a fow days.
