Wuenkas, It has been abund shown by eminent scientists’ of our times, notably the German, that progress in the physical development of nll animals, in- cluding man, is from the homog the heterogeneous, toward a incrensing division of labor amos ferent orvans of tha body, and WiEREAS It has been proven by Her. bert Snencer and others, that such is tho law of all progre s, includiug that of scei- ety and rtate, thercfore; I nssert that the assumption of the franchise by women is directly opposed to the Iqwa of progress, and is, theretore not progression ui retrog 2. That whereas it isad have at heart the perpe tutions —that thei ing up and niaintenance of homes {where nay be reared children both paysically and ntellectually strong; 1 ol mitted by all who b " of women is largely attained ac the expense of those functions which make maturity possible 1 Therefore, he who has the future of his country at heart must oppose any course which will compel them t, educate their minds at the expevse of theic bodies, ns they wust do to sucosssfully compate with men in intellectual fields, 3. Whereas there is a on the puat of both rexes to ref from marriagy, the only natural condi- tion of life—so that our cities are full of women making a scanty hving by their own exertions, and full of young men squandering_the surplus of their earnings in_vice, which condition of things the agitation of tiis subject only tends to make by widening the already great gulf between these classes, I believe that leg- islation in the opposite direction is what is needed, even to the extent of limiting the franchise to the heads ot famiies! 4. Tt can be shown that the oft repeated argument that the laws of property dis- criminate against women is a silly hoax, at least as’ far as most states is concerned. But admittiog their existence would not these agitators be better employed in try- ing to secure the repeal of the obnoxious laws by existiog means, thin in trying to stiil further complicate our already too 1n- tricate and unwieldy mlchinar{ of law mi F. 3.
