=2 L - TR r P — 2 K HE DAILY BEE--0 AHA SATURDAY, THE ACONY OVER. The Last Session of the Woman Suffragists. Gov. Hoyt and Judge King- man, of Wyoming, and Misses Clay and Hag- gart Address the Meeting. Thanks Tendered ‘' The Bee” and Press Generally for Oourtesies Extended. The Officers and Platform Re- ported to the Convention. The moetine Thursday was called to or- der by President Currell and prayer offer. ed by Mrs, Dr. Thomas, of Indiana, The audience was not so large as on the previous night, yet it was all the church would comfortably accommodate. Miss Clay, danghter of Hon. Cassins M, Clay, of Kentucky, was the first speak- er of the evening, and quoted and read ex tracts from the leading law journals of the day and other standard authorities, show- ing the gradual growth of a higher ciziliza- tion and the liberal construction of statu- tory and constitutional law relative to wo- man and very briefly traced the progressive spirit that characterizes the 19th century, At the close of this address Mrs, Mary . Haggart, of Indiana was introduced who, with her first sentence, riveted the attention of her audience, She took high ground and dealt with the question from a natural and rational stand point; said that natural right knows no sex; that women haye souls as well as bodies; that society has always been trying to find out thetrue sphere of woman; that ehe has a capacity for something higher than ulnying the doll baby tor some lord; that she has thrown amde that meek submissive nature whi has characterized her history of the p and is no longer a nonenity in mociety; that the timne h. me, and now is, when it is no disgrace for a woman t, look healthy; that the free exercis of ali our faculties is and was the design of the Cre- ator. Formen to imprison the mind of women is worse than putting shackles on their hands; that both having souls, the development of each should be encouraged. Closing the avenues tc mental develop ment is more destructive to the race than closing the Suez conal would be to a pence- fal solution of the eastern question. The speaker warmed up with the subject and grew sublimeinreferring to those inevitable Taws of human progress and human jus. tice, She rose gradually to the serene heights of poetic fancy and gave expression to thoughts that would have done credit to the most distinguished orators of the day. she assended in Ler thoughts she stood all the while at the solemn bar of the werene equity within her, and by the force of her eloquence, carried conviction to her hearers, She is a young wéman, not over thirty-five, snd has a strong voice, which cnn be easily heard in any public hall, Speaking a4 she does without manuscript, and relying m.inly upon the inspiration of the theme, predicts for her a brilliant future, After the convention had attended to some finaucial matters, Miss Kate I, Kel- sey, a dirk-eyed brunette, of New Hamp- shire, and formerly of Wyoming, addressed the meeting in a short but pointed speech. Her v(\lc:i hstflen ‘ll‘ul ({l;lln(t:t und l-“(i e good, She spoke without notes an thowod sbe knew her subject well and ro- ceived hearty applause, Judge Kingman, of Wyoming, was then called to the st.nd and lea a brief review of woman’sfsuffrage as it had come under his observation during his residence in that territory. Duriog his speech a llolxa number of questions were propounded him by the audience, which had no more effect upon his nerves than water on a duck’s back. He took the fire like an old soldier, and held his ground like a Roman senator. He said that in order. for citizens to respect themselves they must have power to exer- cise their faculties; said that there was visible improvement in the men of Wyom- ing since the right of suffrage had ‘been extended to woman; that women voted for men whom !h-r knew to be sober, honest and mcorruptible regardless of political rnlarmou, the result of which was that n\Vyomlng the best men on both sides were elected. They voted to preserve the Sabbath and close up csloons according to law and fought the campaign against the inverest of r husband and withcut causing any domestic discord. Gov. Hoyt being called for came forward and heartily endorsed all Judge Kingman had said, as he was an eye witness to all and more than had been said which was favorable to woman suffrage, Resolutions were passed thanking Tur Bk and other papers for courtesies ex. tended the convention, and the president for his management of the conyention s its chairman and for his steadfast cham- pionship of the cause of woman suffrage, The following officers of the American ‘Woman Suffrage Association for the en. suing year were anuounced during the evening- THE OFFICERS, President—Mrs, Elizaboth O, Chace. A wild goose flying southward told a Bk reporter to-day that of all the hunters who had gone out from Omaha this fall none bad brought down the same kind of gamo that Dr, Peabody did, The doctor went up to Bancroft recently with Hon, Fzra Millard, both being ac- cnmfilniud by their families, On ariiving at the station, they hireda man to haul them out into the country, telling him to take them to the vicinity of some respecta. ble farm house, where, in case of storm, they could find better shelter than that afforded by their tents. The man com. plied with the request, and at night they pitched their tents in the vicinity of a comfortable farm house, A brief stroll through the fields resulted in bringing in a fine lot of chickens, and at 11 o'clock they rotired to dream of the happy hunting ther. About 2 o'clock there was n great outery, The farmer appeared at the camp and called in Stentorian tones for the doc- tor, and after some little delay he made his apperance on tho scone. Bofore morniog the census of Nebraska had been increased by a nine vnuml boy baby, 1t is a fitting sequel to this story to say that on the fol. lowing day about 70 fine chickens were bagged, and it was hard to tell whether the farmer or the phisician was best pleased, Karnamazoo, Mich,, Feb, 1880, I know Hop Bitters will bear rec- ommendation honestly, All who ase them confer upon them the highest encomiuwng, and give them credit for making cures—all the proprietors clatm for them, I have kept them since they were first offered to the pub- lic.
