Paul road. The fol ng are some of the details of the gathering by The Times: s given THE [OWA POOL, Tt was necrasary, bef he Towa pool, to eame to sume under- atanding on St. Paul buaic Tae Milwaukes aud St Paul road retuses, it is statod, to enter the Tows pool un- jeus-tho Rock Islaud will pool ils 8. Paul business with the other hives and atop ontting rates and using what the 8t. Paul considers questionable meth ods to secure custom:, As might have been expected, the meetivg yesterday was produc:ive of no definite compact botween the conflicting interests. Iu- deed, the outlook is that the meeting will adjourn, leaving matters in a worae muddle than ever before. Mr. Cable, of the Rock Tsland, stated last evening that he did not believe any arrangement for pooling businesa to either of the points bsfore mentioned would be made. He says that his road 1l 1sist on s percentage amounting to one-third of the busi- ness. In making this demand ho does 80, he statos, not merely in the inter- eet of the Rock Jaland, but also for the Burlington and Cedar Rapids, and the St. Louis and Minneapolis roads, over which Rock Island tesins must run to reach 8t. Paul. Of course, the two direct lines, the Milwaukee and the Northweatern, will NEVER SUBMIT TO AN ARRANGEMENT thut allows a lino 120 miles longer than theirs to demand au equal'share of the business with them. In fact, the Milwaukee and St. Panl roads are disposed to lock upon the Rock Tsland’s Albert Lea route a8 u eort of impertinonco. *“Why,” said a well informed railroad mgn yesterday, ‘“‘there are fivs other routes to St. Paul just as good, and severs] of them much shorter than the Albert Lea route of the Rock Island. A line might be made over the Northweatern to Cedar Rapids, then north along the line of tho Burlington & Northern aud the St. Louis & Minneapolis. This line would be forty-two miles sborter than tho Albert Lea route. Other lines might run to Barlington, then north over the Cedar Rapids & Northern to Ottumwaa, and then north over the Iowa Centrai and Mil- waukee roads, and to Marshalltown, and porth via the Iowa Central and the Milwaukee.” All of these five possible routes could do business between St Paul and Chicago with as much dispateh as the Albert Lea route. And, while SUCH A CONTINGENCY 13 IN NO WAY PROBABLE, inasmuch as it would require a cer. tuin amount of business to be given to the Towa roads, still 1t is held that any one of theso combinations would be entitled to just ns large a per cent- age as is the Rock Island, The Mil- waukeo people even now say that, be- sides their direct route, they can ar- range ono by Dubugue which is short- or than tho Albert Liea line, sud just os rightfully ensitled to a percentage as is the latter, 1t is barely poesiblo that tha Rock TIsland may be induced to lower its demands in order to eecure the en- trance of the Milwaukeo road, which has just opened & new line to Omahn, into the Iowa pool, 1t 1s understood that the Milwaukee peaple are not particularly anxions to onter the pool, and will only do so to avoid the cut- ting of rates and demoralzistion of business which will reault 1n the northwestern business unless that pool is patched up. A further meetivg of the parties interested in arranging these mattera will be held in the Grand Pacific hotel, when it is vxpected that an umicable understanding botween the various lines will be reached, rearranging e Confering Titles.
