The famous Roek Springs coal is hero found in extensive quan- tities, and in constantly being oxca- ted by a ‘‘double entry” system of mining very much different from that of mineral mining. Tho town boasts of 12,000 population, of which some 600 are Chineso, and min chief icdustry puraved. Two general stores, two meat marketa and two is the saloons compose the mercantile per- suits, Rock Springs is located on the cast side of & high, barren bluff, and near the notorous “Bitter Orock,” the old time term of emigration, on account of the difficulty experienced in ford- ing. It has been considered that none but a genuine frontier could ride a mule through this creek, the bottom of which is composeq of a soft masa of of aluaii to a great depth, which with other mineral impregnate the water, making it totally unfit for use, it being death to all animals that partake thereof, and can not be used for steam, ALL WATER USED by the town for culinary purposes as well as for steam is drawn here from “Point of Rocks,” a siding twenty- eight miles distant, by water trains, and is sold to residents at 35 cents por barrel. A family of threo will consume about four barrels a week. An artesian well 1,000 feet deep has formerly furnished some second-class water, used when absolutely neccssary for steam, but this has nearly ceased flowing and another is being sunk and s now down 1 300 feet, but without fiading avy flattering indications of success, ~~OMAHA quattz mizes, although several pumps required to eleyate what accu nu lates in the bottom. THE PROCESS OF MINING COAL is not altogether different from any other mining. First the miner, with the aid of a pick, digs at the bottom of the vein the width of his room (six- teen feet) as far in as he can roach with a long handled tool - many times six and eight feet. DOWN IN THE COAL MINES, by Mr. Muller, the superintendent, to adepth of 3,000 feet. Concerning the formation of the coal bads, strange to say, the veius are all in an inclined slope facing, on cropping out at the surfuce, to the east, and, as they ex- tend westward under the bluff above noted, they descend at an angle of about thirty dogrees, These veins are from eight to twelve feetin thick- ness of solid coal, and cover a vast area of country not yet bounded by the discoveries of man. At the entrance of the mine a shed is made to cap the chmax of the track, on which small coal cars are run'up and down this gradual slope by meaus of a one and one-quarter-inch wire rope, operated by a drum cylin- der and propelled by e large stationery engine, located at a convenient dis- tance. As the loaded cars are drawn out, ten at a time, each containing of coal, they continue this ascension after arriving at the surface, until they reach the top of “the dump” some 25 feet abeve the railroad track, where they are instantly unloaded and returned to the bottom of the mine, making the round trip in five minutes’ time. As the coal is dumped it passes aseries of screens, which separate it ir.to different grades, cach grado fall- ing into a sepurate car. No coal is kept in stock, except auch as remains on the yard, By the aid of torch lights we walk down the slope to§ THE BOTTOK OF THE DUNGEON, and fiud no limit to this vast flald of coal. For two hours we travefaed the walls of shining black dismonds, and the commencement is not seen. The double-entry system of mining re- ferred to consists of working two slopes. In this roof the coal is from two and a half to four feet in thick- ness, Some places, however, slate rock is found immediately above the vein, and in this case the coal is all taken out over the passage, and the rock above is utilized as a support of the earth, and whero occaston requires posts are set at convenient in tervals to make assurance doubly sure. At intervals of about 50 yurds, lovels are wade. These consist of wichwayn forgied av right ancles to the wain slope, and ¢ xtend horizontal- ly & far a8 necessary to furnish room for the force of miners to work, Some of these levels ure row a mile long and from either side, thongh usually “‘up hill,” are rooms, These rooms ure occupted by about two or three miners each, and aa fast as worl 18 ars put in 1o support the ceili 0 rooms are worsed to a width of sixteen feet, and extend when worked out to the level above, alwaya leaving @ wall of coal between the twelve foet wido a8 main pillars, These PILLARS O} COAL are always left in the mine, and but little more than half of the coal is ever taken out All through these levels and rooms cars are brought in on one side and when loaded are taken out at the other and drawn to the main slope by mules, one mule to four or six cars Upward of 1,000 men are now em- ployed, of which about 600 are Chinese, out the cawp. Telegraph, Sort. 1, There may be more ‘‘trickery” prac: ticed in the enforcement of some law strength to study a profession, strength to regulate a household, strength to do a day's labor with- out physical pain. All this repre- sents what is wanted, in the often heard expression, “Oh! | wish had the strength!” If you are broken down, have not energy, or feel as if life was hardly worth liv- ing, you can be relieved and re- stored torobust health and strength by taking BROWN'S IRON BIT- TERS, which is a true tonic—a medicine universally recommended for all wasting diseases. so1 N. Fremont St., Baltimore During the war I was in- juredinthe stomach byapiece of a shell, and have suffered fromiteversince. Aboutfour yearsagoit brought on paraly- sis, which kept me in bed six months, and the best doctors in the city said I could not Tive. Tsuffered fearfully from indigestion, and for over two years could not eat solid food and for a large portion of the time wasunableto retain even liquid nourishment, T tried Brown’s Iron Dittersand now after taking two bottles I am able to get up and go around and am rapidly improving. G. DECKER. BROWN'S IRON BITTERS is a complete and sure remedy for Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Malaria than enforcing the so-called prohibi- tory law of Maine; if so we are igno- rant of the existence of that law. There may be more downright lying in presenting the benefits to be de- rived from any given law than from the prohibitory statute; if so, we are at a loss to where to look for it. We have no faith ic prohibition, we are free to confess, and have had none since the day when the first law was passed, and nave opposed the whole acheme (we speak equarely), not be* cuuse it was an attempt to break up rum drinking, an evil admitted by all intelligent and well-meaning persons, but boecause the very conception of the thing involved an absurdity, viz., the admission of a necessity for the use of acohol in medicine and the artr, aud tSis, of course, was followed legitimately by the creation of state rum shops to dispose of the article which, it was confessed, must be used under certain contingencics, Years ago we predicted, when writing upon the subject, many of the evils which would flow from the enactment of the law, and we are not happy that the predictions have been fulfilled. It needed uo prophet to mske these pre. dictione, the very worst of which had referenco 10 the enormous rascality which would grow up under the law, How many falee osths bhave been taken; how many good men have re- wreated to horse stulls (cormor closetn) t0 take o drink; how many honseholds liave provided themselves with private supplies—households which in olden tiwes never thought so keep liguor, except in very small quantities for oceastonal use as a wodcine, and how *‘hike Satan” lots of chaps will lie and steal even to gov a diink or to further the spread of the fiery which finds ready sale in the marker, And whut monstrous folly 18 perpe- trated by every logislature which seoks to deal with the sale of cider in this state. I there was no other “trumpery up” except this cider clause business, we should pronounce the prohibitory rystem the very hot- bed of deception-~the very worst edu- cator possible for the rising genera- tion; and honestly believing this, we would gladly see all good meu unite upon some plan to lessen the con. sumption of liquor——a plan which pub. lic sentiment would sustain, and thus the ofticer be backed in his attempt to enforce a law, whatever might be and during winter months 1,500 will be worked, Wages paid the miners is from 75 to 80 cen's per ton, and one fourth deducted for elack; at this rate they often earn 830 to 8125 permonth, There are five of these mines now being worked. All are different veins and sre formed in ‘layers above each other, all assuming the same inclined slope. While boring the wells spoken of some 2,000 more of these veins were passed, sowme, of course, being too thin to work to advantage. There is no regularity about the spaces be- tween theee veins, but all crop out at the surface as they reach the respec- tive powts in line with their inclina tion, There is not as much water in the cos! mines as is tound among the sgreed upon, That public sentiment does not sustain 1he law, even in Muine, is as clear as daylight to our miud, for the attempts to enforce it are only occasional spasmodic. We don’t say this is true of all the towns in Maie, for this would be to malign many good peeple--s)ber long before the law was ever conceived in the brain of that mischief-maker, Neal Dow--sober from conviction of the ovils of intemperance, and not from an ungodly desive to win notoriety, to rule or ruin, and thus disturb” the peace of whole communities, But the worst feature about the whole affair is that not only is the law a dead letter in many communities, but punishment does not follow con- viction of illegal sale in lots of cases, Weakness and all diseases requir- ing a true, reliable, non-alcoholic tonic.
