Burglars and sneak thieves still seem to be hovering about the city. Monday night a visit was made to the residence of H. H. Metcalf, on Eighth street. Entrance was gained by a rear door, and the thieves proceeded to pack up the silver ware in a box and some clothing in a bag, but werc frightened away so hurriedly that they left both box and bag behind them., The only property missed was a few silver knives. ————————— Attention Firemen. Ite Filthiness Makes It a Dis grace to Any Civilized Community, And It Ought to Give Way to a New One. The present city cal cooler, or cage, for whatever name it may be known by it would smell as aweet, and no sweeter, is a disgrace which ought to ba wiped out. At the best it is too amall by far, there being but two little rooms, and rometimes, as for instance Sunday night, there are as many as fifteen victims packed in there. With poor ventilation and tilth on all sides, the victims swelter and swear, and think themselves fort. unate if they get room enough to plant their feet and lean up against the wall, to say nothing of getting space enough to lay on the floor, The walls have been whitewashed time and again, until the layera are thick and all saturated with the accu- mulated filth ot years. Of lats even this much has not been done. Ver- min abound, and every crack and crevice is awarming. An occasional dose of chloride of lime ie thrown into the cage to kill some of the stench if possible. Whether the cure i not worse than the trouble is o question. In this filthy hole prisoners, supposed to be human, are thrust. Some of beastly drank, and they besmear and defile everything, while those who are sobered up must sit and endure as best they can. Matters might be made a little better 1f the prisoners themsulves were obliged to scrub out the hole every dey. The exercise would do them good, as they sit around and eat and fight vermin from morning till night. The facts of the boose, or ‘filthiness of the place, and its unfit- ness for a city jail, are well known to the city officials, and they cannot plead ignorance, The other day sev- eral of the city authorities took a peep into the den, and as the door was npened such a stench poured forth taat they fell back in disgust. In view of this state of affairs, and in v.ew of the insecure condition of the calabooee, it seems as if there would be no need of punching up the city authorities to build a new jail, and in the meantime to see that the cala- boose is kept shoveled out at leasty For a city of 20,000 people to have such & pen, worse thau a decent hog pen, into which to thrust those who violate the ordinauces, is an outrage on decency and a blot on the record of the city. - KOR SALE. Newpost Letter in Ziocinnati Enquirer.. By far the most beautiful girl in all Newport at present is a Boston hair dresser, About all the male admira tion 1 the entire Casino yesterbay afternoon was bestowned upon her, and she received it with the uncon scious grace and diguily of an ideal duchess, Her father wasa bricklayer, Tam told; her mother was a wash- woman, apd rhe herself ended her schooldays at the age of thirteen, to earn her own living. And here she is, a bright-skinned brunette, with big, melting black eyes, abundant jetty haw, regular features, a tal), shapely, well carried figure, and per- teotly lady-like manners, She works busily and quite profitably at home, but is now out for a holiday, and then a women loftily sent for ner to come ann nress her hair, meaning an insult, she wrote back: ‘I regret to say it is impossible, Idid not leave my shop a8 long ago as you did your slaughter- house, but I am for the time being as far away from it,” The fact was that the woman had more than twenty years ago been a practical worker ina Boston pork packing house, in which her hueband founded his fortune While speaking of this beautiful hair- dresser, let me deecribe her toilet of yesterday, as it illustrates a prevailing elaborate style of afternoon costuming at Newport, The material was ivory white surah, shirred for & quarter of & quard from the waist downward in close gathers, so that 1t showed every action of the hip. The fulness from the gathers was arranged in plaits, which extended to the edge of the skirt, where they were met by a fall of white lace put on in eoquilles, The bodice and paniers were white nung’ veiling trimmed with lace. A small cape, made of row after row of Oriental lace, reached just below the shoulders. Her hat was completely covered with the same laee gainiture, to the exclusion of any other trim- ming, and her white satin parasol had several lace ruffies as a bordering Not & touch of color was seen, and the effect was that of just such sunple elegance as most of the fashionable Newport girls strive after.
