SO L i | POLITICAL NOTES, Senator Beck, of Kentucky, predicts that Alesander H. Stephens will be ben Hill successor in the United States Scnate Senator Garland, of Arkansas, according to the Little Rock State Gazette, will have no opposition whatever to his reelection. The democrats of Kansas are much di satisfied with the action of their state con- vention The platform and the ticket are both obnoxious, Speaker Keifer opened his campaign at Springfield, Ohio, on Minday night, with what is called “‘the ablest sprech of his Iife.” 1t is difficult to imagive what it wa like, Yolger, if elected governor cf New York this year, might te a dangerons man for the administration to tackle in 1584, Per. haps this hasn'c been thought of at head- quarters, Of the 1,408,851 voters of State, 872,148 are natives anc ners. The 1,246,209 inhal city hoAe 336,187 voters, of which 207,314 are foreigners and 128,900 pative, Represontative lisle, of Kentucky, admits that the democracy will lose two or three members of Congress in Kentacky, and is wild enough to thiok they will gain “several” in Pennsylvania, Three ex-governois of New Hampshire ~—Cheney, Smyth, and Head—will attend the republican state convention as dele- gates. They are now all engaged in busi- ness in Manchester, The friends of Mr. Crapo claim to be much encouraged by the standing of the delegates thus far elected to the Massa. chu-etts state convention, They assert that n large majority of themn are fav.rable to their candidate. Colonel Jsmes O, Broadhead will proba- bly be the democratic candidate for con- gress in the Ninth Missouri district, The district is uncomfortably close for the democrate, having only about 500 party majority, The model political platform reported this year is the one adopted by the X VIth District Cenvention of Ohin which nomi- nated Colonel M. Churchill for congress. It reads: “‘Resolved, That we will beat them this year, Senator Windom will take part in the campaign in Minnesota and reply to the attacks made upon his character and rec- ord by his pnl(l.roal enemies, He has re. ceived 8o many assurances of support from the better element in the republican party that he has no misgivines as to the result of the senatorial contest, The Michigan greenbackers and demo- crats are following up their fusion on a state ticket by similur action in some of the congressional districts, In the Fifth district they nominated the vice president of a National bank and resolved that they are “‘®pposed to the republican party.” The Gubernatorial campaign in Tennes- wee will probably be enlivened by u jint canvass between Senators Jackeon and Harris, The former sides with the State Credit faction of the democratic party, while the latter favors the repudiating fac- tion. The legitlature to be elected this ear will choose o suc essor to Senator {arris, T General James Longetreet, who was nominated for congress-ut-large by one fac- tion of the republican party of Georgia, believes that it is unwise for the republi cans to pominate any distinctively party candidates in that state this year, and he has accordingly declined to run, He thinks that the only way to defeat the democrats i for all” the anti-bourbon ele- ments to unite, Thee 1, a rumer that the Towa republi- ans 1wy be uneaccessful io their intention to seud w solid party delegation to the next Congress. The danger of a break is®said to be in the 1st district, where the yreen- backers and democrats are trymy to unite upon a candidate in oppositiou to Moses McCoid, who h s been renominated by the republicans, The district has given w re- publican majority of 8,000, snd the discon- tent must be widespread if there is dunger of it being lost, Senator Mahove is meeting with cner- wetic opposition from some ot the promi- nent republicaps in Virginia, He will not have so cordial and united a support from the republican party in this canvass as he received last year ~ The spirit of Lossism he has introduced. into the politics of the State is distateful to many, #nd he would doubtless meet w th an overwnelming de- feat wero thers any other alternative than ing the state again over to the Bour- b ons, The prohibition question is likely to play an imp rtant part in the Tennesee clmpnlfin. The udoption of an anti- liguor plank by the state credit democrats s bringing to the tupport of their cunli- date fur governor th, temper nee elan ent in the pirty, while the saloon iuterest ix arra) ing itself openl: om the ride of Gen. eral Bate, the repudia..ug democratic can. didate. The Towa democrats are taki republ their party, i ver rolied npon to wendment omplish the But so far thele success hus net A democrat addrbased a letter to Mr, Theodore Guelich, n lead- ing German, and chairman of the Anti- charg been encouraging. Probibition club, inviting him to §sin the democratic party. He replied in a letter, stating why he proposed to continue a re. publican, and exposing tne inconsistent position of the democracy or prohibition, Ta reply to numerous suggestions from Ohio democrats as to how the campaign should be conducted, General R wecrans, chirman of the democratio congressional campaign committee, writes areply saying that “‘the democratic party is the nucleus on which the Union of the minor masses can be practically and promptly made, 1t is the only one that offers & hearing or a promise to greenback, civil service, anti- monopolist, railway transit and other re- formers, 1ts motto should be! Unity in essentials, freedom in non-essentials, liber- ality and justice in all thivgs.” The Cin- cinnati Enquirer tells Mr, Rosenoraus that this is yery pretty doctrine, but that he ha | better quit presching and get down to Iiundl.nl if be expects to doteat the repub- cans, Marrylog Rich You need not be poor and depend- ent on your wedding day, for every person—male or female—can got a good round sum of money at masriage if they hold a certificate of member- ship in THE MARRIAGE FUND | tors independent of the fair.
