f § ]thu city papers. 2 A MYSTERIOUS CAGSE. . y | A Woman Drowns Herself at Daybreak in the Missouri RQiver, No Clue to Her Identity Except Her Clothing Left on the Bank. A very mysterious suicide took place Saturday at the early hour of 6 o'olock upon the rip-rap on the Missouri river bank at the west end of the Union Pacific bridge. At the hour named it was quite foggy on the and dark enough toobacure some- 1t objects at a short distance away, but a young man named Archie Robin- eon, who lives near the saw-mill and owns a small boat, saw a woman linger ing upon the bank with a bucket in her hand and supposed that she had come to bring dinner to somo one of the laborers in the shops or smelting works, She atood upon the rip-rap a few moments and then stepping into a small boat, which was chainedat the bank, she began to denude herself of her clothing, taking off everything except her extreme under garments, She then cooly stepped upon the stern of the boat and jumped into the river. There are a number of eddies at this point and she was caught in ono of these und floated round and round for quite a while, Young Robinson, who is only sixteen yoars of age but quite a stout fellow, tried to loosen ono of the boats and go to her rescue, but being unable to do so run for his own, which was tied near the aaw mill, and soon followed the woman down siream, By this time she had been cast out of the eddy and floated to the sand bank beyond Boyd's packing house. Robinson followed her as rapidly as possible and had nearly overtaken her when, just ashe was about to seize her, she sank beneath tho water and was not seen again, It was rather strango thatshe should float 8o long, as she had very little clothing to buoy her up and thy distance from the spot where she left to that where she sank was fully a quarter of a mile, Tho case was ro- ported at police headquarters and the clothing which she had left in the boat was taken there and put in the hands of tRe marshal. As this may serve to identify her a description of itis given. It consisted of a plaited black straw hat, with & bow and black ribbon on top, a sacque somewhat wora and patehed in the back, and a worn blue overskirt, a new gingham apronwith string pof ticking and a pair of sandals, such' as are worn by a Swede or German woman, There was no one who seemed to have any idea as to who the woman was, and nono had been repurted wissing up to last accounts, and investigation by Policeman Gor- man did not rosult 11 fiuding any elue to her identity. The only witness of the affair beside young Robiuson was the Union Pacific watchman, who saw her jump in. 1t seems to have been a cuse of deliberato premeditated sui cide, and it is probable that the 1an was one «f those unfortunate g8 who huve floated about, on the r bottoms, living as the mistress of one man and another until hife became such a burden it she rosolves to end it in this tragic marner, Horaford’s Acid Phosphat: FOR THE ILL EFFECTS OF TOBACC: Dr. C. Substantial Remembrance to the Pas- tor of the Kirsv M, E, Church, The members and friends of the First M. E. church Friday gave their pastor, Rev. J, W, Stewart, a substantial token of their good will, and apprectation of his labors among them during the past conference year, 1t being the twentieth anuiversary of his wedding, they gathered in large numbers et the parsonage, while he and his wife wore attending to their duties at the teachers meeting, and spread out upon their table an ele- gant china tea sot, silver sugar bowl, butter dish and fruit set; also an oil painting, the work of Miss Oarrie Steveus, The substantials were not forgotten, aud with these served, the company remained until a seasonable hour, and then left wishing the pas- d good wife the blessings they orve, Rev. Stewart's work during the past year has beon warked with o success that will be long felt in the annals of Methodism in Omaha, and if episcopal appointment shall turn his footsteps toward Omaha for the coming year, his friends prediot for him greater success in the future than in the past, but if he should be placed over another field, he will go leaving behind him results that will long bear testimony of his worth and merit, SLAVE OSEMITE COLOGNE Made fror the wild flowers of th FAR FAMED YOSEMITE VALLEY, it is the most fragrant of perfumes, Manufactured by H. A Decorator of Houses and Fublic Buildings ia General. The Astonishing Snocess of C Specht, the Cornice Man. Few visitors who come to our)met- tropolis are aware of (the many in- industries that Omaha possess, We can boast of several large manufac- tories which are known all over the United States, but we can also boast of smaller ones which are growing at such a rapid rate that within a few years they are bound to see Omaha in front rank of the great manufac- turing cities of this continent. Omaha may be proud of having 8o many of those men who do not build their business by electricity but let it grow with the city. It is very hard for many visitors who come to this city to estimate how many good manufactories Omaha pos- sosses. A BEk reportor makes daily rounds of the city, and occasionally strikes some of these stray places, and finds a delight in getting all the infor- mation possible regarding their busi- ness, and thinks that the public will always rend such sketches with delight, aswe all work for the welfare of our homes, This morning, while the scribe was on his usual trot, he happened to drop into the Weatern Cornice Works, situated on Harney, between Twelfth and Thirteenth streets, where he struck the industrious proprietor of the catablishment, Mr. C. Specht, of whom the reporter de:ired to obtain some information in regard to the cornice business, He was almost paralyzed when the boss commenced to recount the many elogant rosi- dences and business blocks he has or- namented with his cornices in this city alone, and could decorateas many more, but alas! the mechanics for the manufacture of cornices are veryscarce in this country. Mr. Specht took thereporter through his factory and explained the working of the different machines, the laying off and catting of ornemental work. In one room the reporter was shown an immense lot of machinery for tin work, which the proprictor was unable to use on account of the rush for his cornices, This establishment gives employment to over thirty able bodied mechanics, who receive average wages of 83 per day. Ten of the mechanics are constantly kept on the road; some in Towa, ome in Missouri and Ne- braska and other western states. It is marvelous, and many readers of Tue Bee will bo surprised to learn that Western Cornice Works supply tho whole northwest with galvanized iron cornices and other ornamental work in very large quantities, Mr, 8. took his bovk and gave the following names of some buildings which were lately completed by him outside of this aity: x Went Point school house; City hotel, Plattsmouth; Keeny and Stewart block, Blair; J. H. Hungate’s bank, Blair; M. Maley’s block, Blair; W, A. Dawning's block, Kearney; Ryan's bl ck, Beatrice; opera house, Platts- mouth, Shorwood’s block, Platts- mouth; Commercial bank, York; Exeter nchopl house; P, C. D, Thomason’s block, Butto City, Montana; C. C. Burr, residence, Lincoln; C. M. Layton’s residence, and many others which space forbids us to mention in course of construction, A few years ago when the in- dustrious proprictor arrived in the city, like all of us seeking fortune, he soon found out like all the expert me- chanics, that there was a field for him open, and to-day he is one of the most prosperous manufacturers in this city, while his business transactions this year will amount to over one hundred thousand dollars. Among the pleasant social events of of the pant week was the wedding on Sixth street, in South Omaha, in which Mr. C. Nelson and Miss Jennie Lareon were the principals. Mr, H. Lisser was the groomsman and Miss Bophie Thedo bridesmaid. The hr‘g{le looked charming in her dragn of wine- colored silk, and her attendant notless 80 in her attire of blue* silk, , The ceremony was performed by Judge I, M. Stenberg. Y There were about twenty-five cou- ples present to witness the nuptials, and after the ceremony all sat down to an elegant supper, after which dancing foliowed, and, with other so- cial enjoyments detained the guests until 3 a. m., wine being served before the party broke up. The happy couple went right to house keeping in a cosy little home prepared for them on the hill, where Tue Bee wishes them a long 1i8¥of happiness and prosperity. The presents were numerous and costly. The bride’s parents gave her a handsome set of household furni- ture; the groom an elegant bed-room set; the bridesmaid, a silver castor; Mr, and Mrs, Bock, a large clock; Hannah Quest and Lizzie Johnson, a silver card stand; Christina Nelson, a silver jewel case; Mr. and Frederick-| son, a dozen silver knives and forks; Mr, and Mrs. Haste, linen tablecloth aund napkins; Mr. and Mra. Vincent, the super- intendent and general manager of the work at the Florence cnt-off was in the city Friday and from him it is learned that the favorable weather has enabled the work to proceed with such rapidity that in two weeks time the Omaha ¢ St. Paul people may if they choose lay their track over the six miles of new line, The north three miles is entirely completed, _and the force is now . at work Wcutting down the two ‘‘hog backs.” It is not intended to say that the work will be completed in two weeks, but the line will be graded to a 90 foot grade, while the present roadbed is 130 feet to the mile, besides being six miles longer than the ‘‘cut-oft.” Whether the St. Paul folks will lay their iron at once or not is unknown, but it is probable that they will. When finished the grade of the cut- off will be only sixty-five feet to the mile, and the saving to the company in coal for engines alone will be $500 per month, Baby's Warning.
