BLUPF‘S HOW SI0UX INDIANS LvE | Their Intelligence Increasing Under Civilization at tbe Expense of Their Physical Powers, New York World, Dr. F. J. Quinlan, who has been four years physician to the Sioux reservation in Dakota territory, has just returned to this eity, and 18 liv- ing at 104 West Sixteench stroot. To a World reporter last evening Dr. Quinlan gave the fillowing facts in regard to the Indians on the reserva- tion, their habits and customs, ana their present condition and future prospects of the great Missouri river valley: *The Sioux nation,” said Dr. Quin- lan by way of introduction, ‘‘extends irom the Nebraska line on the scuth to the Cannon Ball river on the north, and embraces all that area of territory from the Missouri river, which forms its eastern boundary, two hundred miles west. This vast territory com prises the Sioux roservation, and in- cluded within ita boundaries are the Red Cloud, Spotted Tail, Santee, Cheyenne n.ul Standing Rock agen- cies. These agen contain in all 23,400 Indians, divided as follows: Standing Rock, 5,000; Red Cloud, 6,000; Spotted Tail, 7,000; Choyonne, :.,400 Santee, 3,000, Stand- ing Rock s about twonty-five miles south of the frontier town of Bismark, on the west side of the Missouri river. There 18 a romance connected with the crigin of the name of Standing Rock. The agency buildings are on a plateau 150 feev above the level of the water mui about half a mile from the bank cf the river. As ono reaches the agency proper at the forks of one of the roads he seea an upright column of rude block of stone, from which the agency takes its uame. This stone is about three feet high and eighteen in- ches in diameter at the baee, and it tapers toward the top. It is covered with vermillion and other gorgeous paiuts, and gaily decked with beade and Troquois shells, Strips of searlet list-cloth with feathers pendant are sometimes uaed as decorations, and these together with the staring colora attract the ey of the stranger, and often fill him with wonder and amazement. Thisstone is supposed to be the patri- tied remains of a Ree Iudian women whe was of a very jealous diaposition. All this country once belonged to the Reo nations, and s now held by the Sioux by virtuo of couquest. This lodian woman’s husband was a fine {looking brave and very much of a besu, and kep. his fair bride in con- stant tears by his attentions to the dusky beauties with whom he came in contact, One day she went out into not returning her friends sought her, and lh:ul]y found her petrified, as they said, in a sitting posture, with her head resting on her hands. ‘‘The ans a8 a clasa are dirty and lazy. hey live only iu the pres- ent and have no thought or care for tho future. All they want to do is to cat, sleep and dance. When food is plenty they eat and are merry; when the food is gone they reconcile them- selves to their condition, and they will submit to a famine with a8 much in- differenco and cheerfulness as though it were o feast. A wonderful change for the better, however, has been brought zbout within the past eighteen months, through the energy and good mauagement ol the agent at Standing Rock, Muj, Jae. McLaughiin, He has given matters thero his pvrnunnl supervision, and the consequence is that nearly all the Indiansare in- dustrious and thrifty, their farms are and there is now every abundant harvest of votatoes and other All tho chiefs and their tribes who with Sitting Bull participated in o Custer u cre in 1876 are now eful and 18 farmers at 1 ncy, the only ution being the famous who is a prisoner at Fort 50 miles south of Btanding Sitting Ball, Rundali, o weehs the Indian with Lis famiy received from the govern- ot his” supplies of coffec, sugar, rice, tobacco, bacon, bakirg powder, tlour and Ith beef, each child one day receiving as muu]‘. a8 an adult, These articles are furnished to the governm allof the best qu they aleo receive clothing for t selves and their lies, cooking uteneils and everything required for also among the indus- successful of the farmers mmapleinents, with improy ines, work ry ertic aus of to-day are not the Indians of fifty years ago, ro are a great many forms of dia- their ¢ um ity. No intoxicating liquors are al- lowed to be sold to them, under sev- ere penalties, After tho Caster mas. eacre wore all disarmed and dis mounted yw many of them have ponies, and all the transportation of supplies from the landing to the agency is done by the Indians, There are no white settlers allowed at the agency, except employes of the gov- eramont, but all along the east side of the Missouri river there are numer- ous little settlemonts springing up and also many successiul and prosperous farmers —_— Debilitated persous, and sufferers from wasting diseases such as con- sumption, scrofula, kidney affections, will be greatly benefitted by using Brown's Iron Bittors. ARCADIA. A Lively Young lowa Town Where Thrift Succeeds and Idlers Decay. Correspondence of The Bee. Anrcavia, Ia., August 22,—Arcadia was the central and most prominent of the ancient divisions of Pelopon- nesus, It inciuded the most pic- turesque and boautiful portion jrecce, It abounded in mountains, forests, rich meadow lands, springs, brooks and rivers, although without a seaport or navigable rivers. In an- cient times its inhabitants were hunt- ers and rough herdsmen, who, as years rolled by, became agriculturists, stock growers and shepherds. Their habits were simple and quiet, and the { happ of their Jife among the mountains, their fondnees for music and daucing, and their hospital made the Arcadians pass among the of 98 ancionts for favorites of the gods; u tn song and story they are handed down to usas the synonym for a land of peace, simple pleasures, and un- tronbled quiet.
